The og fans of these 70s bands must seem so unimaginably old to you ... many of us were younger than you when these songs came along. Music of your teens and 20s colors your life for the rest of your life. Especially when it changes irrevocably and something you took for granted is just gone. I hope these songs you're enjoying now will always bring you back to this moment in time for yourself, too. A good moment, a beginning. Enjoy!

How they got their name: ***The Doobie Brothers got their name from their friend Keith "Dyno" Rosen, who suggested it after the band struggled to come up with one on their own. The name came about after the band members were often seen smoking marijuana, and whenever someone wanted to smoke a joint, they would say "Let's smoke a doobie". Rosen then suggested the band call themselves the Doobie Brothers.

They were one of my top three bands when I was like in grade school and I didn't understand any link with their name or anything. Since my name is similar to Dooby, some of the potheads in my high school nicknamed me doobie. Years later in grad school I learned from some stoner housemates that I had a special birthday, too, LOL it's like God wanted me to be a stoner or something. Not today, Satan.🥺😇

The 70's was an extension of the 60's music and personal expression. Young people were no longer under the constraints of "the establishment." Suits, ties, and buzz cuts were out, long hair, tye dye, and singing about whatever you wanted was in. Being different in music and appearance was so freeing. For me, the 70's musical lyrics and sounds went along with how I felt inside. It's could lift me when I was down, confirm and validate my feelings when no one else could, and stir up my soul for no reason at all. Even now, when I listen to my music, I get chills and my heart swells inside me to the point of bursting. I try to listen to current music but, honestly, it falls way short. I guess my expectations are too high. 😁

I think the reason '70s music was so upbeat, is that the U.S. had just got the last of our soldiers back from the very unpopular conflict in Viet Nam in '72. All the protests and anti-war music were over, everyone was just happy and wanted to party. So the music that became popular reflected that.

Steely Dan connection - one of their guitarists (Jeff Skunk Baxter) contributed some sweet solos on Steely Dan songs, and later the Doobie Brothers adopted Michael MacDonald as a lead singer for a spell.
