Bringing back memories here! Took my new girlfriend of less than a month to see this tour in Dec. '88 at the Cow Palace in SF. She was a Journey, INXS type fan and I was worried this would be too much for her. I had seen Metallica first at Day On The Green in Oakland in 1985, then again on the Puppets tour, so I knew this had the potential to be a tough sell. She hung in there like a veteran, down on the floor. Immediately, I knew she was a keeper. We were married in '89, and 35 years later, we're still together and have seen Metallica countless times. Good times...

I don’t recommend Pantera at all with the exception of ‘Cemetery Gates’. It’s the only song of theirs with any melody; everything else I’ve heard just strikes me as ‘redneck metal’. It’s not a cultural group one should be proud to belong to, if they belong to it.

Awesome that you listened to the studio version first! This is a great live version for sure, audio is good and its still at a high point in their career. Always do the studio first though, its how we all heard the song for the first time and its how the artist intended it as well. It makes the follow-up react to an epic live performances that much better as well because you have the original to compare it too.

Metallica is explosive to see live! I've seen them 5 different times. They came to Denver in '92 after they returned from Moscow - 3 nights at McNichols ... I was at all 3. I swear that I had whiplash when all was said and done. There is really nothing like going to a metal concert - especially Metallica! They are in a class by themselves - watching your reactions is giving me serious flashbacks. Love it.

I was at this show, on the floor, beat up and bruised for a week, but worth it. The next tour (Black Album) was maybe even more insane. I had backstage passes (I was a musician in Seattle 88-94, and my best friend was a sound engineer) and when they started Enter Sandman I was standing at the soundboard with Mick Hughes, the crowd from all the seats rushed the stage, pulling up and stacking the chairs, total chaos near riot...it was awesome.

I still have my original box set of this concert series called Live Shit Binge and Purge which was a mashup of multiple concerts. Metallica is one of those bands that are badass in the studio but in another level live. This song is about Moses and the Passover. You hear him tell the story of the Creeping Death. During the Passover Jews would sacrifice a lamb and paint blood over their doorways to cause the Angel of death to pass over their homes as they’re faithful.

The energy exchange flowing back and forth between Metallica and us this night felt almost supernatural. It was a barely controlled riot from the jump to the end. I feel SO lucky to have been at this show at 21yo. I get chills nearly every time I watch any of the vids from this show. Do yourself a favor and check out "Whiplash" from this show. Fuck Ya! That Seattle’s show in 1989 is probably the best concert footage we have of Metallica in their absolute prime. The set list is great, the band is fucking relentless and they play for something like 2 1/2 hours - almost 3. if you want to compare any songs from their first four albums to their live performances of those same songs, I would strongly recommend that you refer to that one concert, and you can be guaranteed it’s them at their very best.

I first saw them live in 1985. This show is how I choose to remember them. James was neutered shortly before the black album was recorded and now his voice pales in comparison to what it once was, he lost all the power and anger that used to be in his voice. I never saw them live in person again after this 1989 tour.

Glad you enjoyed this, it’s so fucking epic. I would definitely listen to studio versions first, then live versions. I have been lucky enough to see them 6-7 times. The full albums - the general consensus is that the first 5 are the best (particularly 2/3/4 - absolute prime MetallicA 🤘widely regarded as three of the best metal albums of all time). You will have an amazing journey listening to the first 5 albums start to finish. They’re not that long, around an hour or so, and you won’t want them to end. 1) Kill ‘Em All 1983 11 tracks - 51 mins Fast, raw, excellent. James’ vocals not at their peak yet, and production is just ok. The live versions generally sound a lot better than the studio tracks, but still very good. 2) Ride The Lightning 1984 8 tracks - 47 mins Absolute masterpiece, many fans have this as their fav album. 3) Master Of Puppets 1986 8 tracks - 55 mins Pure epic masterpiece from start to finish. The best metal album of all time. Amazing that they were so young when they made this. 4) …And Justice For All 1988 9 tracks - 65 mins Masterpiece from start to finish, many fans will have this as their favourite album. It’s not easy to pick a favourite album out of RTL, MOP & AJFA. 5) MetallicA (self titled - or “The Black Album”) 1991 12 tracks - 63 mins Amazing album, look forward to seeing your reaction to this one

A lot of people requesting the 91 Moscow show also. It is amazing, but 1 warning… On the Black Album tour (and several tours afterwards, I think maybe all of the 90s) MetallicA started committing a crime against humanity - they started playing a shortened version of the song Master Of Puppets. They played the first half of the song and cut off at the best part. 😱😱😱 The set list is also better on the Seattle 89 show, compared to the Moscow 91 concert. They eventually brought the full song back live. The still play a lot of old classics in their set lists and are known for mixing their set lists up a lot. So if they do multiple shows in your city, go to EACH AND EVERY SHOW!!
