The piano was played by legendary session pianist Nicky Hopkins. The conga drums (larger and lower-pitched than bongos) were played by African percussionist Kwasi Dzidzornu, also known as "Rocky Dijon". Stones bassist Bill Wyman played maracas, and Keith Richards played both bass and overdubbed lead guitar. The voodoo-esque "woo-woo!" chant was suggested by Anita Pallenberg, Keith's girlfriend and she was among the backing vocalists on the track.

Musically I think you are responding to the hypnotic relentless underlying musical structure that does progress in intensity… It’s brilliant because it tickles the pleasure of it which is what the devil does, isn’t it? Seduction is underlying while the contradiction of the serious and the provocative lyrics punches you. It will always stand the test of time… One of their best for sure but there’s more! The live version mentioned from their Rock And Roll Circus performance gives you some idea of how in your face they were at the time and the power of Jagger’s front man personae. And yes! the audience is into it. The song is much more clever than being a “devil worship” song…. it’s getting at a much deeper take on the nature of human beings and their need to justify their worst instincts as played out in history. Still happening today, isn’t it?

The genius of the musicians and bands from the 60-80s is they tended to have a variety of sounds, rhythms, and energies. A song I hardly knew myself, having mainly listened to his first 3 albums. It s really about the willingness to hear different music. From your genre or the mainstream. Very much about the scene you are into. Also, with bands who have a large catalogue, you may only hear certain songs, either featured in ads or movies etc. his reactions seem always involved and genuine and take you on a path of appreciation ,in details. @@finngirl1313 Oh yeah, thanks for the condescension, my point was that everyone listened to the radio back in the day, or MTV, so you were exposed to every kind of music. These days people select what they want to listen to, and if you don't know anyone who loves a certain band, you can easily never hear it. By the way, car 'stereos &radios' are basically obsolete, you decide what you want to hear. If you are 24, it's entirely plausible to have not heard music from 40-50 yrs ago. Anything else?

You can pretty much drag anything out from the 50's, 60's and 70's and we'll love listening to it again! The late 50's is when music started being created to convey a message to people. Then the 60's really pushed the idea of bringing awareness of world issues to the minds of youth. They knew that kids don't watch the news or haven't yet reached the age of caring about anything beyond their own closed in reality. They haven't earned enough life experience to be able to understand the meaning of what was going on in the world. So, the musicians in the 60's and 70's focused their music and lyrics at the youth, knowing they would start to understand the issues and how they could make a difference in the issues. The musicians knew the parents wouldn't be the ones listening to the "kids" music, so the messages would be lost on them, and it's their children that are going to be the ones making the changes. When the 80's came along, music started to go downhill. Because music became more about money. Record executives knew the formula to make money with kids. Loud guitars, someone screaming into a microphone. The lyrics didn't matter, as long as it had something to do with relationships or hating anyone over forty. The musicians that wrote the music and lyrics that had a purpose in the 60's and early 70's had either died or had just burned out from all the time and effort it took to create REAL music with REAL meaning and REAL messages! So we were left with kids that had no direction or anyone to lead them through the causes and issues. Until we've ended up with what you are stuck with today. Childish garbage.

I was at a Catholic boarding school in South Africa for abused boys way back in 1970. We used to listen to this before going to Sunday mass and it made me wonder if what we were being told in mass was actually true. The kicker was I was picked to do the readings from the Bible because I knew how to pronounce words like Deuteronomy and Ecclesiastes, so it was a no-brainer for our Headmaster (who was also a priest) to use me frequently, as he knew I wouldn't foul up. Despite all the Catholic doctrine that they instilled in me, I'm now an atheist.

Thank you for this one!!! The piercing guitar is by Keith Richards who turned 81 yrs old today (12/18). I took my husband and son to see them in Vancouver this past July and this song is always a huge crowd-pleaser. Thousands of people singing "Woo Woo!" even later as the crowd was walking away from venue - could hear it for blocks! Loooooove this one.

"Pleased to meeet chouuu"- classic. Old dear friend of mine, rest his soul, was a huge Stones fan, esp this song. His Jetta's horn was the exact same pitch as the "hoo hoo. Hoo hoo". So yeah, this song makes me think of him and me cruising around rally driving in the snow, beeping along with this tune. Rest Easy, Wah-Teh. It been 34 years, and I still miss you.

I think the Stones themselves would love the term, "Soul." applied to their music by a new listener.❤❤❤

So glad you did this!!! The song is the devil telling you who he is and asking for u to figure it out and saying the influence he has but also wants you to feel sorry for him because he can't control his actions Hence the title of the song sympathy for the devil

That symbol with the tongue was put out when I saw them in concert back in the 70's. Still have my $15 ticket stub. There were no seats, just 120,000 people in the Superdome in New Orleans, Louisiana! Mick Jagger really knows how to put on a show! If I remember correctly, there were speakers stacked as high as a 2-story building! What a great time that was! You'll like this ... for a while the Stones were banned on American radio (which was our main way of hearing songs) after they put out the song, Let's Spend the Night Together! That was too risque for the time but boy, did those times change quickly!!!!
