"His voice is weird in a good way" yep, exactly that. I think it tends to be the make or break thing about SP, for a lot of people, some people just struggle to enjoy Billy Corgan's singing voice. Myself, I rememeber not liking his voice at first, but over time it grew on me. "Melanchollie and the Infinite Sadness" is one of my favourite albums of all time and was basically the soundtrack to my teen years.

Alright dude, I was worried that you wouldn't like Billy's voice but I was surprised. They're something like alternative rock, grunge adjacent. Mellon Collie was a complete masterpiece, one of the absolute best rock albums ever made, like top 10 or top 20 in my opinion. And Billy was one of the few rockers of that age that can actually play guitar. Most other alternative rockers after grunge didn't bother to solo or didn't have the talent to. Billy's a musical genius.

Nice! Bullet with Butterfly Wings was my introduction to Smashing Pumpkins and 90s alt rock in general. Not sure if its super representative of the Pumpkin's catalog - it's a lot heavier than some of their other stuff - but that's OK... it certainly makes an impression. 90s classic! Definitely go Cherub Rock next, then follow up with Today, 1979 and Tonight Tonight. Edit: the Genre is Alternative Rock... the Pumpkins were Grunge adjacent/contemporary, though I doubt anybody would consider them grunge itself. Their stuff got played back to back on the radio with Nirvana, Pearl Jam and The Offspring. (Speaking of which... any chance I can get you to check out The Offspring - Come Out and Play? Or Self Esteem?)
