If Deftones are nu-metal than why is there an interview with Chino on tiktok where he states that they aren't? He literally says they are separate from nu-metal and that they are their own thing. He even goes on to say that him and the band wanted to stop touring with Korn (and other nu-metal bands) because they didn't want to be grouped in with their genre and have that label put on them. Also, all the classifications I can find for them list them as alt-metal. A different genre from nu-metal. They have similarities but are utimately different.

I see people commenting that this isn’t even one of their best songs, but I cried the first time I heard this. That “I don’t care where, just far!” is so visceral, I can’t get enough of this song. If you like this one definitely listen to “My Own Summer (Shove It)”. “Change (in the House of Flies)” is probably their signature song and a damn masterpiece. Deftones are from California... they were caught between the 90's grunge scene... Pantera's reign in metal... and the rise of KoRn and 'nu metal'... in the 90's.... Their debut album 'Adrenaline' in 1995 was heavy on riffs and groove like a punk rock version of Pantera. This was Deftones' 2nd album in 1997 - 'Around the fur'... probably a precursor to the 2000 album 'White Pony' that broke the band huge... 'Around the fur' was more in their style and sound as they were emerging as a heavy rock band... They are a seamless fusion of metal... punk rock... hip hop grooves... and some electronic influences. Some of their best tracks - 'My own summer' ... 'Bored' ... 'Change (in the house of flies)' ... 'RX Queen' ... 'Hole in the Earth' ... 'Engine No. 9'... 'Minerva'... 🤘🤘🔥🔥

Your reactions are the best they remind me of myself and other friends I got into nu metal back in the 90s! Where you just feel the music. This music is be shared and experienced by your generation so and so on so that it can live on! Just know my generation Gen X we were the rejects the outcast that people with status didn’t want to hang out with nu metal was our outlet where we could be who we wanted to be and say f everyone else! It Became our way of expressing ourselves through the clothes we wear the piercings and tattoos most importantly the fun we had as a way to let go of all the pain and suffering and stress! Deftones are not "nu-metal" no matter how much people try to claim they are. They're a mix of alternative rock and metal. Their official genre is actually labeled as alternative metal (aka alt-metal), which is a different genre than nu-metal (check their wikipedia page). The band, themselves, are also quoted as saying they do not consider themselves nu-metal. They do have similarities to nu-metal at certain times, though, so I understand why some people are confused. That being said, they have a lot of seriously great songs. They've had 22 radio played singles and, what's awesome is, some of their best songs aren't even singles. So they have a lot of great stuff to appreciate.

They're one of just 3-4 bands from that era that are STILL putting out great music to this day. Passenger (feat. For the record, Deftones are alt-metal. There are lots of different metal genres and some of them can be closer to each other than others. The band Deftones even stated, themselves, that they are alt-metal, not nu-metal, and that they are different things. They are close neighboring genre's, though, so I don't blame people for not knowing. Some key differences are that alt-metal is typically more diverse and experimental. Having a high amount of slow songs and inbetween ones. Alt-metal also tends to not have as much production as nu-metal. Sounding more raw as opposed to highly produced. Nu-metal is a lot more metal-ish, as well, with mostly heavier songs. Alt-metal borders more on progressive alternative rock with a metal undercurrent.

So you should check out "Wicked". That's a cover Korn did with Chino (the singer to Deftones) and it was on Korn's 2nd album. I remember being 15yrs old on 1995 and staying up till 1am and seeing “Bored” on MTV, which would have NEVER been on during the day or any other time. I was a fan instantly! Never heard of them before and nobody I knew even knew of them and I had to stay up late in hopes they would play the video again so I could hear it, because it took weeks to find their album and hear it again. lol They’ve been my favorite band ever since. They began the set with "Bored" and I was blown away. I had no clue who they were but I went out and bought their album after the show. They played so loud that I couldn't hear well for a few days.
