Was told by my gastroenterologist that ONLY PPIs like omeprazole/esomeprazole can protect against Barrett’s Esophagus turning into cancer. I had to change from famotidine 40 mg to esomeprazole 20 mg. Side effects aren’t as bad as throat cancer 😢
@MollyPelletierRDАй бұрын
I completely understand your concern, and it’s true that PPIs like omeprazole and esomeprazole play a critical role in reducing acid and protecting the esophagus from further damage, especially when it comes to Barrett’s Esophagus. However, many MDs will agree that medication alone isn’t always enough. Nutrition and lifestyle changes are often equally important in managing reflux and reducing inflammation. Together with PPIs, the right diet can further support healing and long-term protection against more cell damage. You're on the right path by addressing both.

I see my gastroenterologist every year and every 2 yrs I have an endoscopy. Ive been seeing him for 20 yrs. I went to him because food would get stuck, even if I took smaller bites. If I was home alone I wouldn’t eat I’d wait till my husband came home just in case I choke. Dr put me on Protonix 40 mg 1x per day for the 1st 5 yrs, I had Barrett’s Esophagus,Esophageal Reflux, and a hiatal hernia (I was dx with a hiatal hernia when I was in my younger years) I’m 67 now , I have no side effects taking the meds,but I know it’s not good for your bones so now I’m taking Protonix 10 mg . I have changed my diet and I have less choking, my last 2 endoscopies did not show Barrett’s esophagus, I’ll have another one in a couple weeks. ( my biggest concern is will I ever get off of this med? ) Dr said you can try over the counter meds nope I had heartburn bad I know that’s a lot to read.

@melanieolsson60622 күн бұрын
You can use Gaviscon advanced to wean off of them (there are guides online if you Google it), also slippery elm and marshmallow root are commonly used to treat lpr/gerd since it creates mucilage that protects the stomach similarly to the alginate in gaviscon advanced. You should probably check with your doctor if you have had severe issues though. To my knowledge slippery elm and marshmallow root are harmless and little to no side effects, but ymmw and you should read up on them before to make an informed decision :)

I resist taking PPIs and am skeptical about having asthma. I don't use inhalers as prescribed. I believe I have A LOT of postnasal drip. I also believe that my weight and eating habits are the greatest contributor to my problems. I'm frustrated that I can't pinpoint exactly which of the symptoms is causing so much coughing and phlegm production. I don't trust docs because they are pill pushers. What to do?
