Last year the european club cup was held in Struga, Macedonia Hotel Izgrev and Gukesh was staying in Hotel Drim ( i did not know about this) where my mother works. I love chess and asked my mother if she could do something so i can enter where they were playing and just enjoy the atmosphere and see the GMs up close i didnt ask to meet them, just watch them. My mother did her best and told me to be there one day in front of Hotel Drim and a guy who is also a chess player from Macedonia would take me at Izgrev to watch them play. We grreted each other and he told me to wait for 2 more players who will be going with us to Izgrev and one of them was Gukesh but i had no idea who he was. We entered the vehicle and i asked them their names and ratings. Gukesh said he was around 2550 at that time and i said wow great. The macedonian guy who was driving told me that he drew a game against Peter Svidler ( i think it was him) the day before with black and i told Gukesh it seems like you will be one of the best players soon and we laughed a bit. He asked me who i was i told him nobody i just love chess haha. It seems like he is one of the best already.

I personally hate that rule that once you touch a piece, you 'have' to move with that piece. It has nothing to do with the actual art of playing chess, calculating, fighting against the clock, your opponent... it's just a random rule that doesn't really have any relevance to any aspect of the game. It's just a rule that someone invented that bizarrely got picked up and repeated, mindlessly. Can someone make an honest defense of it for me? I'm curious what others think.
@charlesfeinson1401
@charlesfeinson1401 Жыл бұрын
Here goes. Firstly, it seems necessary to have SOME restriction on how players can move pieces before finalising their move. For example, imagine if there was no restriction except the clock and a player could make a move on the board, consider it, and then rescind it and do something else before hitting their clock to finalise. This would be irritating for the opponent who has to stare at a position that may never occur. The issue is that all other restrictions have some problems with them, or are ambiguous or unclean. Touch piece move piece ensures that no advantage can be gained by making moves and looking. It means everything has to be done by visualising. Further, although it can often be harsh, for the vast majority of strong players it never presents any issue, and keeps games clean and snappy and fair. I do think policing these rules too harshly at kids or beginners tournaments is bad for chess as it puts people off, but at high level I think it makes everything cleaner and better.
@hannicutie0.0
@hannicutie0.0 Жыл бұрын
For complicated positions for example, think of it this way, once you move a piece, the position in the board suddenly changes. All of a sudden you may realize other tactics that you may have missed prior to moving that piece. (because after moving a piece, the square left behind becomes empty. most of the time discovered attacks, hanging pieces are overlooked) Realizing this after making a move, and having the free disposition to change it is a bit unfair to your opponent since you have missed it during your calculation prior to moving that piece. Now if you can do this every single time and you have unlimited time (like +30s) then it would be very annoying.
@Vunderbread
@Vunderbread Жыл бұрын
@@hannicutie0.0 Maybe I understand the rule incorrectly - I was referring to merely 'touching' a piece, not moving it. Does the rule state that you are allowed to touch a piece, and then move with a different piece? Because if the rule is rather that once you 'move' a piece, it cannot be undone, then I absolutely agree. I did notice in the video from the Shankland match that he indeed took the King, lifted it, started to move with it, etc. In my mind there is a huge difference, and I understand how once that action is committed, it shouldn't be allowed to be undone. Except of course in the rare instance where a move with that piece would be illegal.

I expected to hear that he had 5 seconds on the clock or something like that. He didn't even write down the opponents move before grabbing the king. Might be the most ridiculous thing I ever saw.

@@bughunter1766 ikr. If he was pushing for a win then you could explain his desire not to let the opponent think. Here it didn't even matter black cannot lose

I think what happened with Shankland is the danger of pre-moving pieces. Blundered a knight in a game yesterday because I had pre-moved it (expecting the opponent to attack it).

...Bf4! nice!! I've seen that Shankland blunder in cartoons, like where Bugs Bunny says "It's rabbit season" in order to get Daffy Duck to say "It's Duck Season", which gets Elmer Fudd to shoot Daffy. Same idea, apparently. Slow down, Sam!!

Agad, if possible with your mic, you can try only have it record the frontfacing side, the side facing you, so a bit more of the reverb will be gone. If you already did that then i guess we'll just have to appreciate the wavey vocal setup now! Either way it's nothing too annoying but thought maybe you hadn't tried this yet
