Monarch in 3 Minutes | Town of Salem 2 Quick Guides

Heya y’all! Today we’re breaking down how to play monarch, which is a role I feel a bit… conflicted about being in the game, but we’re gonna talk about it anyway!
Town of Salem quick guides is a series of brief informative videos about the roles in the game. I break down what they are and how they work, and explain some of the confusing to-do’s that come with playing a game as complex as Town of Salem.

Ah, I had a note to add in the thing about deputy. I’m gonna pin ya in case other people ask about it! Tldr, the community doesn’t have a term for “roles that can have their name displayed next to them” yet. I said TPow because 2/3 of the townies that can do this (pros, mayor, dep) are tpow. I had a note to add the little asterisk in about deputy technically being tk, but I must have forgotten haha.

@@AdagiaTechnically you could also do this with a Jailor if the existence of a Jailor can be confirmed. Just like in ToS 1 CCing a Jailor does not end well for the liar generally speaking and Jailors will be protected and followed through on votes anyways.

Ah, perfect timing. (Story time) Just today, I was in a Ranked Practice game and claimed Tpow. I whispered the other Tpow claims that I was Prosecutor and asked what they were. One claimed Mayor, another said "you'll see tonight" and the third didn't respond. I got knighted that night, and the Monarch revealed themselves to me. We managed to hang an Investigator who didn't post until they were upped... yeah. The night was uneventful, but the next day starts and the Mayor claim is knighted. They immediately get shot by a Deputy and are revealed to be a Jester. We hang the Voodoo Master on suspicion of taking too much claim space. That night, I die to the Witch. My role is revealed to the town as... Jester. Yup, of all the targets the Monarch had, they knighted two Jesters. We both laughed it up in dead chat.

I think that for "Who to Knight," alongside townies with a kill, I would put "People who have been unmistakably confirmed town by other means." For example, suppose a Seer finds that 1 and 4 are friends, and then 4 dies and flips town, and then the Seer dies and is confirmed Seer. Barring some deeply rare shenanigans (such as if the Seer was coven who then disconnected and was Enchanted to flip Seer for their DC death), 1 is now as confirmed as any TPow. Ditto for Admirers who have proposed to confirmed TPows. These people aren't quite as confirmed as revealed people are (if nothing else, there's a possibility that the Monarch isn't reading the logs correctly), but I think they're more trustworthy than TIs that found coven (which could be PB/Arso who was visited, WW, coven bussing, or Doomsayers paying attention).

Monarch is the type of role where RK (Random Knighting) N1, 90% they're evil. 80% of people who are Monarch and try to knight AFTER N1, still hit evil. I dunno what it is, but in my experience, Mon's rarely knights townies. They always manage to find evils and it's infuriating.

I've found counter claiming an evil who also claims mon very difficult. Especially if the people you knight die when you knight them. I won a game because the shroud kept shrouding the monarch claim, so no one ever believed that the mon was real. Or when the mon knights people the same day they die to coven. Tbh I think mon needs a slight balance rework only to make themselves easier to confirm against a evil counter claiming as all the other tpows are stupid easy to confirm themselves. Mayor and pros can just do their thing, and jailor will have a track of people they jailed, and can exe any jailor CC. Mon can't really do shit if a coven keep claiming they are the real Mon.

I remember when (as a vet) I saw someone claim monarch D1, I was (as bait) "No, I am Monarch", alerted and... Killed the actual monarch (which was in fact the claim) because they decided knighting a obviously fake cc was a good idea (They were the only one that visited me and put me in their will so I was confirmed. Next two night I had a crus on me so I didn't alert (that actually killed somebody N2 by doing so). N4 I want to alert but tav rbd me, and I... Actually killed last coven with my second alert on N5 (and then we vote out arso because I defended the crus)

One trick I feel like you should've mentioned is knighting a vet. If you pull it off without dying (normally, a vet who just killed won't alert again immediately) and there's no ritualist, you're suddenly *very* hard to kill.

seems like potential for a risky strategy: ask the vet to alert, then ask a cleric claim to heal you, and finally knight the vet. if you survive, the cleric is real (or a PM)

There are exceptions to knighting on Night 1. Sometimes you want the defense and sometimes that day 1 chat is trust worthy. Although I don't normally knight night 1, I will see a claim day 1 that I think it is worth knighting night 1 just so I can have that juicy basic defense night 2.

When we get to "Coroner in 3 minutes", you gotta at least mention the potential of Coroner bait. Sure, it works better in TT than ranked, for TT has a confirmed ck slot for rit and conj, but if you're in ranked and need a way to distract the ww, then just bait them into you and save the jailor.

ok issue, i've won more games knighting n1 and then saving my next knight for lategame, if an evil is knighted, TI usually find them pretty fast, so i really use that tactic, imo when i save knights for n2-3-4 i'm dead by that point, either voted up or just killed by many of the neutrals or coven

I remembered I was in a custom TT game with 5 TPOW slots. We got cleric. Apparently clerics are guaranteed in TT? I'm not sure. But hey, new TPOW is Cleric.

how did you get 5 tpow slots??? there's only 4 tpow in the game and you can't go over the limit using buckets if the entire bucket is unique, im asumming that the list was bugged/modded and when the game can't fill a slot, it just defaults to cleric.

Dude, I’m not really sure what you’re getting at with these comments on multiple videos, but as someone who has played with Pipe for years, is friends with the regulars in his videos, and sees the recordings happen in real time via discord, I can assure you that they’re all real. A lot of what you’re seeing is survivorship bias. People have no reason to upload the videos where they get caught out early on or die night 1, so you only ever see the games where things work out. For every game that gets posted, there’s about 3 that never see the light of day.

Suure and it's a total coincidence they always 'error' in his favor and never catch him out on his frequent weak claims what's the next the Dream excuse of hiring a scientist to try to disprove the odds lol but this was not a jab at Pipe and his simps this was a jab at the devs that cant seem to decide if they want it to be a streaming game like jackbox or a social deduction game like blood on the among us etc that if they are removing the anonymous then they need to fix the throwing roles so it its actually fair to nonstreamers or keep anonymous mode and remove the throwers and cheats as when you enter a match and there's chunks of the lobby clearly in cahoots in either a discord channel or alternative voice channel it's kinda killing the game and yes i am a lil hard on Pipe but when he has openly cheated in voice chats with other players (and the statistically impossible odds that so many in a single match would 'error' that much) but he does work as an example to the devs and other players for what is going wrong in tos2 and what needs to change if they want tos to not die out

Is knighting n1 really objectively a bad strategy? The two points you made a the beginning of the video can be easily mitigated. First you don’t have to claim as monarch d2 if you knight n1. Doing so is counterproductive because of guessing roles. Instead not claiming or even fake claiming could allow you to eat an attack with your defense to keep towns numbers up (you can sort of bait in a way to get this to happen) You’ll also be able to confirm yourself with 2 words whenever needed. For the second point randomly knighting n1 statistically will hit town more than it will hit evils and even if it does hit evils the power of 1 extra vote is less powerful the earlier in the game it is. (you also should start with the knighted person in vfa in this case) This in addition to an easy confirm on hand PLUS the possibility of eating an attack with a bait PLUS the low chance of the d2 knight not having an impact till the very end of the game (and keep in mind at this point you’ve probably knighted a confirmed townie alongside your first knight) makes knighting n1 sound like a valid strategy in some gamemodes. I definitely see the flaws but writing it off so quickly just seems so wrong to me when there’s definitely more to it then something like “new player want live longer” edit: another point i completely forgot to make is knighting n1 isn’t necessarily the same as random knighting. you could knight a tpow claim that asks for to/lo edit 2: I wanna specify most of the community disagrees with this thought and I understand that must mean im missing something. Im very open to being wrong and would love if someone could explain/dispute these points

My point isnt "knighting N1 is good because most of the time youll hit a townie" Its "Knighting N1s downfall is knighting an evil but knighting an evil doesnt actually hurt that much for these reasons. Also you will knght a town more than you will knight an evil" Also 60% doesnt tell the full story. A jester being knighted N1 just isnt going to have the potential to swing the game the same way a team of coven having a knight is. Its true you are going to knight evils a lot. However my point isn't against that fact.

I didnt specify the exact math in my original comment because the "proper analysis" of determining the chance of knighting an evil is taking the number of evils and dividing it by the number of players minus 1. There just was no point in adding that. Is it the word statistically thats wrong? What other word was I supposed to use?? Its also not like I made this opinion on the spot theres more detail to my thoughts then what I wrote on a youtube comment but neither were relevant to the two points that were made in the video. Also this is a one off sentence from my original comment and is the smallest point of what i was saying. @@superl8296 The one you are talking about is a per game ratio. I did also a simple version of average chance including randomness of all any. It gets way more complicated if you also include n1 deaths, since then won't technically knight anyone n1. And to other points, i just don't bother with them since they vary too much. Like knighted jester can still mess your game a lot, depending on how he plays and coven with 5 votes can truly steamroll the game in comparison.

Monarch is a really bad role for town, not only if you Knight a coven you will get them much closer to majority you will also make that coven seem more trustworthy. That extra vote is MASSIVE it gives coven majority in a naturally 5v4 to a 5v5.
