In the versions I've heard/read, Zeus had made some boast about how omniscient the gods all were so Tantalus decided let's see if you can guess what's for dinner. Also, Demeter: "This tastes like people." Everyone else: "How do you know what people taste like?" Also also, Torment of Tantalus was a great SG-1 episode. Just sayin'.

My own personal Too-Easily-Distracted conspiracy theory is that Dael lies to us. She is not Australian. She is secretly a goddess who got bored, snuck down to the mortal realm and now takes great delight in sharing old gossip about her heavenly relations. Also, trying mortal things like cakes, and wearing really big hats.

This story reminds me of something that happened last year in the D&D game I'm in. We had just come upon a town that had been razed by goblins. We find one survivor, an acquaintance of ours, who is pretty badly shaken up. We get him healed up and back on his feet (albeit still in a state of shock), and a stranger happens by. We explain what happened, and add that we're going to see if we can find any other survivors and/or salvage what we can from the wreckage; he's all, "Cool. Hey, there's an inn down the road. I'll take this guy there and get him taken care of; you guys feel free to stop by when you're done here." The two of them leave, we continue our search, we find nothing. We get to the inn, where the stranger informs us that our friend is upstairs, resting from his ordeal. The innkeeper offers us some food, which we happily accept. Shortly after the meal, we realize that the innkeeper, his assistant, and the stranger are all jackalweres; we fight and kill them, then run upstairs to check on our friend. None of the rooms are occupied, nor do any of the beds appear to have been in use recently. We find some of our friend's remains (along with those of several other people--including, we think, the inn's actual owner and his staff) out back, and suddenly realize just what was in that stew they'd given us....

I think in at least one version the whole human cooking thing was explained by Demeter's mourning, since she wasn't letting plants or anything grow all the crops and livestock were dying... but at that point it's just like hey, maybe now just isn't a time for feasting of any kind?

So when they went down to Tantalus's place, was it kind of like a sympathy vote? Like were the rest of the gods, "Really?... I mean he is Zeus's son but really? Do we have to? Alright fine."

So Tantalus basically tried his best to be worse than the gods. He probably didn't manage it, but he certainly did his best. I was actually wondering how cold Australian winter is, and it turns out that it is like an average spring day here in Sweden. At least our summer is warmer than your winter.

"Cue laughter from the Canadians when they find out it's like 8 degrees Celsius." Accurate. I am Canadian, and I did laugh. Though I can also sympathize - it is Spring and thus generally in the double digits outside, but when my thermostat died (apparently being wired into the house doesn't alleviate the need for battery power because my thermostat was designed by a moron) and I didn't notice for a while, it was bloody cold in here. So yeah, 8 degrees can be cold if it's not expected.

I said it once, I'll say it again: just how genre-blind the greeks where? He should've known that nothing good ever came from tricking the gods (it ended badly even for the one who did it succesfully) unless you are a god yourself, couldn't he find a better hobby than to mock Zeus? Love your pijiama pants, by the way.
@TheMimiSard8 жыл бұрын
I don't think it genre blindness, as all these stories were probably moral tales whose moral was "Don't disrespect the gods". Of course there's the tales of the gods who go doing bad things to mortals and other gods who punish the victims, which ends up very much a moral of "Gods are assholes", or "Don't be really pretty".
@IanWorris8 жыл бұрын
Well, of course that was the reason behind that, but since the characters of myths knew each other it still make them genre-blind in-universe.
