The joke about zombies caused me to go read en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gun_politics_in_Australia. Apparently for zombie-preparedness you need to be an occupational shooter in order to get access to the necessary Category D shotguns. So... does becoming a zombie-preparedness expert count? That'd be killing two birds with one stone!

So this is the story of the establishment of the world's first Veterans' Care program. Very nice of the king to agree to support this soldier type who maybe wasn't from his own kingdom at all... Also, I have to point out that a cavalry soldier's boots probably wouldn't be all that good for marching long stretches in. After all, the boots are meant for someone who rides. Hence, they probably wouldn't have very thick soles or even necessarily very good quality leather, either. They'd be more about looking flashy and shiny, kind of like Brother Brightboots's boots. A good example of this are the traditional gaucho boots of the South American plains. Basically, they were made by sowing the leather from a horse right onto the lower leg of the rider, while the leather was still hot from the just-butchered animal. They made for a a very solid and water-proof leg covering, but they didn't have any soles at all, which of course wasn't a real problem since the gauchos would ride literally everywhere that wasn't right next to where they were staying that night.

Monzahr "I have to point out that a cavalry soldier's boots probably wouldn't be all that good for marching long stretches in. After all, the boots are meant for someone who rides." Cavalrymen spend more time walking than riding. The horses would soon wear out if they had to carry a rider all the time. Cowboys and others who do spend lots of time in the saddle have multiple mounts.

Dude, there was a single tower in Skyrim filled with aggressive highwaymen and one non-aggressive old lady NPC and now i'm wondering if it was a reference to this tale. On a sadder note, my stealthy dunmer often realized the old lady wasn't aggressive one arrow too late. I installed a mod to tell me if an NPC was aggressive specifically because of her. Also, i'm confused about your zombie assumption, are you saying you don't have your zombie alarm set up and the yard littered with traps?

I'm confused as to this weird alternative theory of Europe where a literally fearless soldier is out of work. You say this is a Grimm tale, so at the latest, we're talking 1857. The reference to buffalo leather as standard issue military kit probably puts the start date at some point after the American Revolution, because the only real large scale killing of anything one might call a buffalo I can think of is the Americans' idea to deliberately hunt North American buffalo (or bison) to extinction as part of their ongoing wars with the indigenous peoples of the Great Plains. (There's a few other kinds of buffalo, such as the African buffalo, but their populations are naturally much smaller than the bison, and they're not really an animal to be trifled with.) Still putting that as a soft limit because of the other species of buffalo around - apparently there's a domesticated Asian variation, though it's not widespread enough to suggest leather imports to Europe making it into regular military kit. So the date range we're talking is ~1770?-1857 (I know the American Revolution was earlier, but it took them a while to make their way to the great plains and start getting seriously invested in extermination wars against the local population.) Can anyone pick a period in that date range when any given part of Europe wasn't either actively at war, or getting ready for the next big one? The only ways you left the military in those days is feet first, due to some horrendous injury that renders you unable to fight, or because you've served your minimum time and have decided to retire. Heck, a man as conspicuously brave as someone who is literally fearless would probably have gotten a couple of promotions and could probably land a (relatively) cushy job as a trainer if he was getting too old and slow to be a front line trooper anymore. That's one of the hallmarks of professional militaries vs the old European levies - keeping track of your best soldiers toward the end of their normal career and shifting them over to training positions for the next generation of soldiers.

Perhaps the story is called boots of buffalo leather because the lesson of the story is to not judge someones worth before you know what there capable of. Yes the hunter/king had nice boots and clothes the best of the best but was obviously a crap hunter since he got lost and a bit of a chicken when it came to the robbers. The solder on the other hand couldn't even get a job because no one would give him a chance yet he was humble enough to help the hunter/king even though he couldn't help himself. Think if you've ever had to walk a mile in my shoes kinda thing. Thats just my take on why its called that. Im probably wrong good story either way!
@AdamYJ9 жыл бұрын
Huh. Didn't expect there'd be more Faerie Daels. I mean, I'd hoped but with your mythology videos moving here, I didn't know if you still saw the need for the fairy tale videos As for the title, titles of fairy tales are somewhat arbitrary seeing as these were folk tales first and most people probably called them whatever they wanted (or called them "The one with . . ." as in "Tell us the one with the soldier and the boots of buffalo leather"). Sometimes the name they're written under isn't even what people call them. For example, everyone calls Grimm's "The Shoes that Were Danced to Pieces" "The Twelve Dancing Princesses" instead. Or sometimes people shorten the names like how Perrault's "The Sleeping Beauty in the Wood" became just "Sleeping Beauty".
