Great video Xavier - Couple things i would just like to add Duplicolor Vinyl Dye also comes in Desert Sand ! --- another cool thing you can use to sand your blasters with is a scotch guard pad it sands it very lightly ! Never start a spray on the blaster start off sweep and dont stop until you are off the blaster IMO

Captain Xavier Unfortunately, it seems to be a total failure, unless you want a slightly-dirty plastic look. Addendum: using a double-strength dye bath and leaving it sit for a week yields a deep, almost bronze color (on orange, that is). I'll E-mail the results to you.

If I may, a little tip on how to avoid the seam between the two shell halfs not being painted (and other areas that may be hard to get): Paint your shell halfs from the inside first. That way the seams will be painted and also other areas that may be visible from the outside, e.g. the magazine well.

I’ve been using rust-oleum for most of my paint jobs. I’ve found it beneficial to use one of their paint and primers for the base coat, as the primer part will help it adhere to the plastic. Also, I’ve found that leaving flat or matte finish paints unprotected will cause them to wear off (especially on handles) I have started using one of their specialty lacquers as a clear coat and have had some trial and error. Beware, if you do weathering with diluted black acrylic, then wait at least 12 hours before applying the clear coat. I had an entire half of a stryfe shell orange peel on me because I was impatient and put my clear coat on too early. Other than that it works great and protects the paint very well. I hear so many people saying to use vinyl dye but I’m doing all personal builds at this point and I’ve had no issues with chipping or paint not adhering so far. I can’t justify spending $20 on a can of spray paint.

Acetone, Olive oil, or DW40 work well for removing sticker residue. Acetone is probably the cheapest at 99 cents, then olive oil, then dw40. If one doesn’t work, the other one will.

2 pieces of advise for the group. 1. If you live in a climate with a winter with temperatures averaging below 50 degrees F, Prep and Base paint several blasters in the fall so you can spend the winter doing accent work. 2. Take a lot of pictures during the project. When it is done you will want to be able to show the transformation from Stock to Customized.

Hey Cap! Great informative video! Any tips and recommendations regarding painting Springer's like the retaliator and how to prevent that the 'plastic-on-plastic' region gets scuffed through the slide-/pump-action. Any procedure to protect the paint or have a paint type which is not affected by the sliding? Maybe you can demo this type of paint jobs and the slide action not destroying paint in a video? Keep up the great work! Cheers from Germany.
@CaptainXavier
@CaptainXavier 4 жыл бұрын
The trick is going to be really light coats of paint so there is not much build up (vinyl dye is great for this) and a good thin clear coat. The clear coat will protect the paint. You also might try sanding the under side of the slide to make a little more room to make up for the thickness of the layers of paint. Not much, just enough.

painting generally seems 10,000x more effort than it's worth to do it right, and then no matter how careful you are, something INEVITABLY screws up and inevitably scratches off. there are frequently areas that are really difficult to paint on nerf guns, it takes a lot of artistic skill to put something together that is generally aesthetically pleasing; in other words it takes a lot of time and commitment to not end up with something worse than what you started with.

If using the vinyl spray since it dyes. Then would primer still be good to use?
@CaptainXavier

@@CaptainXavier so the vinyl does good enough with no primer and all I need to do is sand/prep and spray? Wow almost too easy!

Hey guys what would happen if I didn't sand down the nerf gun , also is it possible to paint a whole nerf gun with just acrylics?

Sanding helps it stick,so the paint may wear quicker, also it's possible but may take a while

Good vid. How do you think it would work if I put a base layer of say silver vinyl paint. Then a layer of lesser black and gently sanded the corners? Is it likely not would look there is metal under the black? Anyone tried this?

I'm looking at giving my blaster a camo pattern, a blue for main none sniping blasters and a regular camo for the blasters I plan to snipe with.
