I see a lot of older, very lonely men emigrating to the Philippines explicitly to meet or find a Filipina. Being bombarded with attention from pretty young women can definitely go to a man's head (and other parts of his body) if he's not used to that. I recommend going to the Philippines (or to any expat destination) unencumbered, getting acclimatized, and allowing oneself to get the lay of the land. Sometimes a 25 year old beauty is interested in a 65 year old man for himself, but sometimes not--and let's face it, money is usually a factor in May-December relationships. As President Reagan once said: Trust, but verify.

The issue of supporting her family, directly or indirectly, is a at least a little complicated. SE Asian culture regarding family is just different than in the west. Family comes first. And in poor families and communities borrowing and repaying money is just part of the lifeblood of the personal relationships. It is a communitarian culture and not an individualistic culture. Even so, Asians don't trust people who are bad people either. If you want a relationship with a young poor Asian woman then yes, have some limits. Yes, maintain control over your finances. But if you plan to live in her country and want a relationship with her then you should leave some room for compromise. Other cultures do have something to offer as to what can be a better life and a different point of view. It is going to take time for you and her and her family & friends to find the equilibrium point when it comes to money. Having said that though, you can't live beyond your means.

I’ve lived in SE Asia over 10 years and I’ve lost count of the Old men that have been fleeced & kicked to the curb. A lot of these guys were NOT wealthy , most came here because they struggled back home….but their Social Security payts are a gold mine to a local girl in these poorer countries. She’ll simply strip them of their cash, and move on to the next sucker. You rarely, if ever see an attractive young woman in a wealthy country swooning over an old guy just on basic social security. Never buy anything that won’t fit in a suitcase in countries you don’t have citizenship in….maybe a cheap scooter to get around on. It’s the old saying…don’t have skin in the game. But the best advice I’d offer any man coming to these countries littered with young opportunistic attractive woman is…..Get yourself a vasectomy….but don’t tell anyone.😆 Once they know there’s no anchor baby to your pot of gold ….they’ll lose interest in you fast. There’s so many men in failed hook ups that are now paying for it for the rest of their lives.

Taylor went broke for these reasons. (1) Unwilling to integrate in any way to a totally different society. Lives in a bubble totally separate and spends his entire time with other foreigners outside of the bedroom with his so-called girlfriend. (2) Never keeps a budget for the money spent. (3) Drinks, drinks, and drinks and never deals with his addiction to booze. (3) Learning to say NO! NO! and NO! to family members that ask for money. Personally never had this issue and if someone I trusted I would offer a little as long as they offer someone until the loan was paid. For example their motorbike, tv , laptop and on top of that a written letter in clear English that the loan would be re-paid by a certain date. If they get angry at NO! or what you offer perhaps you are dealing with the wrong family. (4) If the young girlfriend is too good to be true enjoy yourself and offer ZERO cash. Later don,t be afraid to move on the limited time you have in life you could be with someone better if you do not take a chance how will you ever meet her. The most common business scam in Thailand is a hair beauty shop. After living here for many years I am able to spot a bar girl a mile away the majority of foreigners in Thailand are SUCKERS don,t know how many I tried to warn and they never listened. I no longer bother and waste my time with most foreigners.

I married a filipina and she told me over and over and over about how pretty much everyone she knew was scamming a foreigner and how bad she thought it was. I was very naive. She set up a scam 2 years in the making on me and stole all of my savings and gave it to her parents. I divorced her and started over and thankfully I was only in my early 50's. Be careful out there. There's a lot more scammers than you think.

Fantastic, practical, information rich video, as always! How do you do it?! It might be great to have a video, if you don’t have one already, on something like all the different, specific ways that people get scammed out of their business and business investments abroad. Or, many of the specific things that an unscrupulous girlfriend and her family may ask money for, and how one might respond to each of these requests, or something like that. And, which of these requests might be more likely to be true, and which ones are almost surely scams, etc.

Great idea. The hard part is that once you are with someone for a few years, they become your friends and family. Amd something real happens to them, you want to help them. So what do you do when someone you love needs money to save their life? And you need that money to live your life. When you have to make a hard decision like that ... that is when the information vacuum I talk about will help.
@lailaatallah18572 жыл бұрын
@@VagabondAwake Wow. I never thought of that. Especially in countries like the Philippines where they often won't even admit you to the hospital without maybe a $200 - $400 deposit and where you have to be able to pay in full for life-saving measures, I can imagine how heart-wrenching such decisions could be.

The first point you make is perhaps the most important - don't share any information with anyone. I was with my wife for 4 years and we had a child together before she had any idea what my assets were or how much money I had. We've been together for 8 years now and own property together. I know that as a non-Filipino I can't technically own property in the Philippines, but there are, fully legal, ways of circumventing that rule and actually own property here. As usual, an informative video for newbies to living abroad and interesting to see that others share my views on such matters.

Trust and verify. Open a joint account with 25,000 peso in it. Tell her she can withdraw 1,000 per week for her personal use. If she blows through the 25,000 peso in a month or two it's time to say Sayonara. That will be the BEST money you ever wasted! BUT if she faithfully follows your instructions you have a keeper! Don't let her get away! A partner with solid self control of money and budgeting is invaluable! Especially if you are retired living on a fixed income.

Still, one with fairly modest means can allow their local paramour a joint bank acct into which some modest deposits can be made to placate her desire for trust and stability. Expenses can then be monitored. If things go wrong the acct can be closed or abandoned. This leaves more security for the bulk of one's retirement savings.

Dan, do you really think a (scamming) woman would hang around for 3 to 5 years? I would guess .. hope .. if you weren't being an ATM she would realize this sooner and take off if money was all she was after. Some really good points about holding on to you money for sure. Also, I really enjoyed the Madrid clips. I waa just there about 6 months ago. :)

maybe my name is really Taylor, since so many things you spoke of here, I am sad to say, "been there, done that." Now, I am scared of myself, since at age 83 it would probably be impossible to recover/start-over, as I have done, many times. I hate to say this, but you cannot trust anyone, temptation to "take the money and run" gets the best of most people. Especially when they know that you will not put them in jail, "love is intoxicating."

So true. You have to put systems in place that protect yourself. Even good people can go bad over a period of time.

Great post! I feel the same at 69. Covid lockdown, and my inability to see my teen kids, enabled my bipolar exwife to complete her "Parentally Alienating" brainwashing and they hate me now! Internet resources offer little hope for such severely alienated children, who may never rebuild the relationship but suffer very elevated chances for academic failure, mental disorders, and suicide. So who can you trust? WHY trust, why give your vulnerability to another person? Any secret told becomes a non-secret, eventually.
