Mary and violet have this sense of entitlement. Anyone with money is obligated to help them. They look down their noses at Cora and Mrs Levinson until they need her bank.

I love Tom and Matthew’s friendship. Tom saves Matthew’s relationship with Mary here, Matthew restores Tom’s dignity by making him his best man, they work together running the estate, Matthew comforts Tom after Sybil’s death, and they excel at playing cricket together. My personal headcanon is that when Tom remarried, he had a son and named him after Matthew.

I think the writers chose that Mary should open her eyes to predict Matthew's death, but also in that moment she needed extra reassurance of Matthew's love and good intentions, which she got. He kept his eyes closed.

Not really. Technically, if you go back to the original tradition, the *groom* was not supposed to see the bride until the ceremony on the wedding day. In all these matters of male-female relationships, “seeing” the female was always considered more significant than the female seeing the male-for many cultural (possibly traditionally sexist) reasons.

Tom was always one of my favorites. He was true to himself and never apologized for it. Did he come off arrogant? Yes, but so did many of the characters. He stayed true to his beliefs, and never gave up on Sybil despite the fact that she was so unsure for so long. He was willing to wait at the house for as long as it took for her to make up her mind. And his growth throughout the series is amazing. This scene with Matthew is so powerful and shows a wonderful brotherhood between the two. This shows how much he cares for Mary and Matthew.

It's "Matthew's Theme" written expressly for him by Alan Lunn. You first hear this theme when Matthew is introduced along with his mother in the middle of Season 1 when he gets a letter from Lord Grantham about being the next heir to Downton Abbey. It's repeated in nearly every scene Matthew appears and is only repeated one other time p-- when Mary visits his grave much later, when she intends to marry Henry. It is one of the most heartwrenching scenes......
