After I watched this movie I mentioned it to my father the baseball fan. That opened up a floodgate. He said Oakland that year was all about schedules, exhausted players - he went on for a couple of hours and I couldn't get him to stop. I went to the bathroom and he just raised his voice. Fun movie though.

@ 30:03. The 20 game winning streak record set by the Oakland A's in 2002 was eventually broken in 2017 by the Cleveland Indians. That team won 22 games in a row (which is the current American League record). However the all time record is still held by a National League team, the New York Giants (who later relocated to San Francisco), who had a winning streak of 26 games which was set in 1916.

WHY did they skip their reaction to that last good scene of the movie?! Where Jonah Hill’s character shows Brad Pitt the video of that big guy hitting a home run. Such a good scene not to leave in the reaction!

One thing the movie didn't show was, the A's didn't just win on moneyball players. They had 3 great pitchers and a shortstop who won mvp of the league but they weren't shown in the movie.

Losing Giambi, Damon and Isringhausen definitely hurt them, but you're right. That A's team still had enough talent leftover to at least be competitive.

They really only focused on like 3 players so there were a lot of other players good and bad that weren’t mentioned

Pitchers don't win games, they help you not lose. that and they got the pitchers using the same stat methods.

And The Artist was never seen again. I really enjoyed it, but it's interesting how some movies seem to just disappear. Maybe it was a bit too much of a gimmick.

Yes, he's brilliant. But I'd also say in many instances of his writing, if you've seen it, you'll just see it again regurgitated.

I liked Chris Pratt before this movie. I LOVED him afterward. It's so fun. Others will talk about the reality of it. I just love the film itself. But also, I do know that my Atlanta Braves hired a GM who's all in on analytics and they've excelled. Won the World Series in 2021.

I was too young to remember the A's World Championship in '89 so the 20 win game was one of my favorite moments as an A's fan............ and now they're moving away. 💔😢 #sell #selltheteam

As a Baltimore Orioles fan I like to recall when the Orioles traded their best relief pitcher, Jorge Lopez, late in 2022, even still with a small chance to make the playoffs. All the talking heads said they were "giving up" and gave them F grades. The very next season, the Orioles had the best record in the American League. Jorge Lopez was let go by his new team, and one of the pitchers the Orioles got in the trade, Yennier Cano, made the All-Star Game. I do not recall hearing any of the talking heads mention that their assessments of the Orioles trade was bullcrap, and the Orioles actually deserved an A+. I never put any weight into the opinions of the armchair GMs. They don't know. They think they know, but they don't know.

Analytics now completely dominates baseball and has been adopted in all sports, and is the leading way in which baseball teams are constructed now. Teams track everything with players. From bat speed(how fast you are able to swing a bat to catch up to pitches), to launch angle(the trajectory in which a player typically hits a baseball)m to exit velocity(the power a player generates which shows how fast a ball travels when a hitter makes contact), to literally dozens of other things. The “old way” is not obsolete though. Analytics is a tool, like anything else, it’s how you use it that’s important. There is something to be said about having a good eye for talent and putting the numbers aside and watching a player play and seeing something special in him that numbers can’t define. But overall it is very useful and teams have entire departments dedicated to it now.

It is a terrific film in a lot of ways...I am sure you folks will love it. But as you might expect, Hollywood takes liberties with the real story, and in this case it seems like they may have gotten some significant things wrong. You folks should look at it for yourselves, and decide whether the inaccuracies really matter.👍

what you might not know is that all of the MLB players combined annual salaries is barely 15% of the owners expenses. The owners are the bad guys. They rake in billions and players make millions. I used to (and do hate some of the biggest contracts) hate players salaries. But after looking at what the owners make of what really could be considered "property", I think they should get what they can. Without players, there is no revenue.

no statistical analysis replaces the eye test. See, these stats are based on static conditions. They cant take into acct if a pitcher doesnt have the feel for his best pitch, the weather, hitters change of approach. You cant change baseball. The Red sox may have won on the model, but they had the 5th highest payroll that year. nothing changes the game always goes back to basics. Bruce Bochy has won 4 world series in his last 10 years in MLB by managing by his intuition..stats are simply side info..he wins by the eye test. so while a good movie, it lies a little on how effective stats are. players are superstitious to high degree and you cant put that into a formula. pitchers that have been following this max effort for 5 innings are getting injured at 3 times the rate of the 80s...and now, teams are looking for starters to throw 80% and go 8 innings...that has always been the role and we are now back to what works.

Sometimes it's unfortunate that Hollywood feels it necessary to twist reality for the sake of manufactured drama. In real life the manager was down with the program and was basically slandered in this movie.

Billy still with the As 2024. The As are horrible and trying to move to Las Vegas..again..you cant change or reinvent this game. i would love to have a drink with you and share my knowledge. been involved in baseball 45 years. I picked every division winner (6) and the World Series Champs (Texas) before the season started. I use the eye test 80% and stats 20%. I was a catcher for years. i would prob bore you with what I know and what is coming. im not right every year but i usually have the AL and NL teams correct for the final 2 teams.
