​@@RideoutReviews the one thing the movie lies about is the talent on the a's...it barley mentions the other guys not found off the scrapheap or unknowns/scrubs traded for during the season aka guys they had got better or you know traded for that were known still in their late prime guys...yes they lost giambi but besides him they did not lose much(damon and isringhausen were not huge loses at the time) and young guys got better like future world series mvp jermaine dye and stud homegrown miguel tejada who was league mvp to go with reliable vets like eric chavez and terrence long plus getting vets ray durham and john mabry during the season and they had the best cheapest aces in the al with zito mulder and hudson plus lidle to go with good relief guys in koch and bradford....when you have that much great pitching in the 2002 american league like your a national league team your going to win games and its easier to replace hitters on first base and 2nd base for example....most al teams were used to bad pitching...not when you faced the a's a lot of games...people forget this about the a's...they had a lot of talent..sure keeping damon and an all star level closer would of been nice but you can replace those two for the time being..both were just young and were future studs to keep for long term success was the play...they were not the little engine that could...they were good for years before this...cause of good scouts not just giambi damon and a closer

If you do the math...winning 20 games in a row means that the A's faced a possible seven different teams in at least seven 3 game series. Granted, they may have played one of those teams twice or there may have been a four game series mixed in, but still, incredible to face so many different teams/players and come out on top. Oh, and one more thing, they won at least half of those games on the road. Amazing indeed.

Billy Beane and the A's indeed changed the game. I would say the Tampa Bay Rays are the best example of a team that took lessons from this and expanded upon it - the first team to heavily implement shifts, emphasize run prevention, and use an opener as opposed to a traditional starting pitcher (as well as countless other trends). Their front office is filled with magicians. They have a heavy roster churn of no-name players every year but always compete and find their way into the playoffs with consistently one of the bottom payrolls.

My god, in the early '70's, the A's were monsters. I lived in Chicago as a boy and often got to see games at Comiskey. The A's were the most feared and hated team vs the ChiSox. They would do their on-field warm-ups to a chorus of "Boo" and then jog the perimeter of the field waving and blowing kisses to the jeering fans. And then kick our collective asses for 9 innings.

Its a true story, but it does misrepresent the role that traditional scouting played in their team being successful that year and the role that it continues to play in today. Don't get me wrong, this was the beginning of a monumental shift in the way that teams think about stats, but traditional scouting still matters. Teams use a combination. There are also a few minor alternative facts but nevertheless, this is one of my favorite movies of all time and I'm glad that you reacted to it!

I grew up in the Bay Area in the 80s and early 90s. Between the 49ers, the Giants, and the A’s, it’s a big sports town, but also has an odd, unique city culture that’s different than other metro areas on the west coast. One of the more interesting stories is the “Battle of the Bay”, when the Giants and A’s were scheduled against each other in the World Series in October 17th, 1989. The game was postponed due to the Loma Prieta earthquake that devastated the area.

Fourty-nine minutes dedicated to this reaction video... that's respect! Kudos to your friend for this recommendation, and kudos to the winning vote. I absolutely loved your reaction during this watch. I am not into baseball or sports (no disrespect), I mean my family growing up was but I sadly never had that 'gene'. I put this flick on one night (only because I'm a fan of Pitt) thinking I could easily fall asleep to it... nope! I lay there totally transfixed. Months later, yup, I thought I could fall asleep to it since I've already seen it... nope! I was wide awake through it all. I can't tell you how many times I've watched this gem. And when I try to recommend it to people and they say they're not into baseball, I always feel the need to say that it has nothing to do with baseball, I mean, it is and it isn't. It's weird, I don't know, It's such a hypnotic movie to watch. The only thing better than this flick is when you watch it for the second time. "...it's not that difficult... it's very difficult... when I'm pointing at you, yes." LOL.

Billy Beane was the guy who really started it all as far as GM's using analytics in their evaluation of players. He did change the game. This was the film where I started to take Jonah Hill seriously as an actor. He was great in the movie.

Oh man I really liked this movie. I went in blind and it was so good. Although Brad Pitt is like the big star here, I love Jonah Hill in this. You can really see his range and what a really great actor he is

The ironic thing about this movie is that Jonah Hill was only paid $60,000 to do his role in Wolf of Wall Street. When he got nominated for his 1st Oscar for best-supporting actor. He was able to reach into the millions to be cast for Moneyball.

The character of Jonah Hill is actually a composite character. The real guy they’re basing on I think is Paul dePodesta, who became the Dodgers GM in 2004 in a terrible season I’ll never forget. 😂 Andrew Friedman now runs the Dodgers, formerly of Tampa Bay, and the past few years the Dodgers have been using Moneyball principles with money. Because of this movie, the Oakland A’s have become sort of a second team. They’ll officially be if they relocate to Las Vegas. 😂

Baseball lends itself to analytics, because it is a 162 game season, and there are large sample sizes (some players get over 500 ABs). But the sample size shrinks to like 25 or 30 ABs in a post season series, and as we know a small sample size can lead to some statistical anomalies.

That part where Beane added filling up the soda machines in that trade is on the list of odd things to trade for. I’ve heard of other things like: those tubs that players sit in to help with their aching body, gym equipment, stocking up on balls, and many others. They don’t just trade players or personal (yes personal. Equipment managers, towel boys, physicians, grounds keepers, front office jobs)

Great movie. My only issue is that it doesn't even mention the main reason they won 103 games. Barry Zito 23-5 (Cy Young winner), Mark Mulder 19-7, and Time Hudson 15-9. Additionally, those three combined, for 675 innings pitched.

I love how Billy sends Pete in to let Pena know he’s been traded. People think it’s initially cruel, but in reality, Billy has read the personality types of the team, and knows Pena will be an easy confidence booster for Pete.

Many years ago, I played in a Strat-O-Matic Baseball league with a few friends. One year, I drafted a team where all my batters were selected for on base percentage and speed. It was glorious...the amount of stolen bases I got was pretty excessive...I know I had at least a thousand as a team for our 162 game season. The whole strategy was to be on base so much that the opposing team eventually ran out of everything...especially patience. 😁

The three starters the oakland A's lost were not all draft picks. Isringhausen was a starting pitcher that Bean picked up in his wheeling and dealing and immediately recast him as a Closing pitcher, which let him use him in more games(since he only has to pitche 1-2 innings in a game) and by selectively pitching him in advantageous situations, Bean created a Closer with a very high Save count, which manufactured value that was not actually there, so when Isringhausen was picked up as a Restricted Free Agent, this gave Oakland a conditional draft pick, tacked to the end of a round of the draft. In reality all three players resulted in the As getting a compensatory Pick in the first round, in the case of Johnny Damon, Jason Giambi and Jason Isringhausen, the Oaklands A's received the Boston Red Sox(16th Pick overall), New York Yankees (24th Pick Overall) and St. Louis Cardinals(30th Overall) First round draft picks in addition to Supplementary Picks in the Supplemental 1st round held immediately after the 1st round ended, the Result was that the Oakland A's had Four firstround Picks(16th,24th,26th, and 30th) and three supplementary 1st round picks(35th, 37th, and 39th ovarall picks). This had good results for Oakland, they Picked Nick Swisher(MLB HOF) at 16th, Joe Blanton( a serviceable starting pitcher) at 24th, John McCurdy(did not pan out) at 26th, Ben Fritz at 30th(career ending injury 3 years in), Jaremy Brown(Minor League Slugging Monster, but could not keep in shape to make MLB) at 35th, A forgotten nobody at 37th, and Mark Teahen at 39th who had a ten year carrer in pro Baseball, the majority of it in the MLB.

Dang I love baseball. This is one of the best sports movies out there. I'm also deep into analytics, but it does have some human sized problems. The biggest problem with most folks involving analytics is that they take it too far one way or the other. Either they don't buy in at all, which is a huge mistake, or they buy in too much and miss the human element to the game which can be an even larger mistake. Bill James and Billy Bean changed the sport forever.

In real history, billy took the red sox job. The guy peter brandt is based on was going to become the A's gm and the sox were going to send oakland youkilis as compensation. Billy changed his mind though

I understood every minute of the near collapse before Win 20. Whenever my hometown baseball team plays, and I’m driving, they tend to do stupid stuff. One time, before I left work, my team was winning against our main rival by 10 runs. Between 2 highway work zones and one major accident, my normal 20 minute drive home took one hour. We lost the game. This was over 10 years ago, and whenever we play in a big game (ex - postseason), I am forbidden to drive anywhere during the game.
