Mongol Invasions of Vietnam | Past to Future
This video presents The Mongol invasions of Vietnam, also known as Mongol-Vietnamese Wars.
Chapters:
00:00 - Introduction
00:40 - Historical Background
02:59 - The First Mongolian Invasion in 1257-1258
04:51 - The Second Mongolian Invasion in 1284-1285
08:19 - The Third Mongolian Invasion in 1287-1288
10:33 - Aftermath
The Mongol invasions of Vietnam were military campaigns launched by the Mongol Empire and its chief khanate - the Yuan Dynasty against the kingdom of Dai Viet ruled by the Tran Dynasty and the kingdom of Champa.
In the thirteenth century, Vietnam was divided into two states: Dai Viet in the north and Champa in the south. In 1225, the Ly dynasty which ruled the kingdom of Dai Viet for over 200 years was replaced by the Tran dynasty when the eight-year-old queen Ly Chieu Hoang was forced to abdicate the throne in favor of her husband, Tran Canh, later known as king Tran Thai Tong.
Meanwhile, in the North, China has long been divided. By the early 13th century, the Mongols in the northern part of the reunified Jin empire gained strength under Genghis Khan, and started invading the south. By the 1250s, the Mongol Empire had spread over large parts of Eurasia, and was eyeing the Song dynasty in Southern China.
In an effort to open a southern front against the Song Dynasty, Möngke Khan, the fourth khagan of the Mongol Empire, sent prince Kublai to conquer the Dali Kingdom. In the southwest, Uriyangkhadai, son of Subutai - Genghis Khan's greatest strategist, turned east towards Dai Viet by 1257.
In early 1258, Uriyangkhadai and his son Aju, along with 40,000 Mongols and 10,000 Yi troops from the Dali Kingdom advanced toward Dai Viet. On January 17, Tran Thai Tong led the army and 200 elephants and met Uriyangkhadai's army on the field of Binh Le Nguyen. In this battle, the Mongols proved to dominate, forcing the Dai Viet army to retreat to Thang Long where they carried out the scorched-earth policy before evacuating to Thien Mac. On January 29, from Thien Mac, King Tran Thai Tong counterattacked and defeated the Mongols, forcing them to retreat from Thang Long to Yunnan along the Red River, marking the ending of the first attack against Dai Viet.
In 1278, Tran Thai Tong died, the king Tran Thanh Tong retired and made crown prince Tran Kham (known as Tran Nhan Tong) as the successor.
In 1279, the Mongols annexed the Song dynasty; Kublai Khan ascended the throne and established the Yuan. In February 1283, the Yuan army led by General Sogetu landed near the Cham capital of Vijaya. Although Vijaya soon fell to Sogetu, the Cham resistance decimated the Yuan army, forcing Sogetu to withdraw his troops to the northern part of Champa near the Vietnamese frontier.
In 1284, Toghan was appointed to lead a force overland to Champa and ordered Dai Viet to help supply the army, but Grand Prince Tran Hung Dao refused, leading to the Yuan conquest of Dai Viet.
At the end of January 1285, more than 50,000 Yuan troops attacked Dai Viet from Yunnan, and gained continuous victories over the Viet force. In the North, on February 18, Dai Viet troops withdrew from Thang Long to Thien Truong and Truong Yen, suffering the continuous attacks of the Yuan troops.
From the South, although successfully capturing Thang Long, the Yuan army once again suffered difficulty in food supply due to the scorched earth policy of the Tran army.
Two months after the retreat, Tran Hung Dao and his army counterattacked and gained several victories and finally liberated Thang Long capital.
Despite being defeated twice, Kublai and the Yuan army had yet given up their intention of invasion of Dai Viet. In October 1287, the Yuan land forces commanded by Toghon moved southwards from Guangxi and Yunnan in three divisions led by general Abachi and Changyu, while the naval expedition through Bach Dang River led by generals Omar, Zhang Wenhu, and Aoluchi.
In January 1288, Zhang Wenhu's supply fleet was attacked and destroyed by the Vietnamese navy under Prince Tran Khanh Du. Due to lack of food supplies, Toghon decided to return to China on a safety large warship. Under the frenzied attack of the Dai Viet army, Toghon was forced to abandon his ship in Lang Son, and was escorted back to China by his few remaining troops through the forests. Meanwhile, in the early morning of 9 April, the Yuan naval fleet led by Omar fled home along the Bach Dang river where they were attacked and killed or drowned while Omar himself was taken as a prisoner by the Vietnamese.
Do you think who actually won the wars, the Mongols or the Vietnamese?

As modern day Mongolian who visited Vietnam, I felt the geniune patritic spirit of Vietnamese people, and I thought USA-Vietnam war was the main reason but apparently it pre-dates way back when our ancestors had fierce fights. So, Vietnamese people are very good at defending big armies, Mongols, US regardless of their military might. Good video. I didn't know Mongols invaded modern day Vietnam 3 times. Now, we import many things from Vietnam. No hard feelings I hope to my Vietnam friends out there.

The Mongols relied on mobility while Vietnam is plastered with cellulose (aka trees), caves, rivers, mountains ect. That´s the reason central Africa and the Amazon forest didn´t get colonized up until the 20th century. You can´t shoot or chase anyone through thick foliage. Fidel Castro literally took over all of Cuba hiding in the forest, with 22 men !

Do you understand what it means to take less and more enemies? Because the Vietnamese understood the strengths and weaknesses of the Mongols very well, they knew that if they were to confront an army that was skilled and many times larger, they would suffer a lot of losses, and they realized that the Mongols often The Vietnamese did not bring much food when fighting, so the Vietnamese applied the "garden without a house" tactic, that is, burned all the food and moved the people into the deep forest, waiting for the enemy to plunder nothing. and lack of food, the spirit of depression will organize decisive battles, from which victory will be achieved, that is the military art of Vietnam, the country has won thousands of huge enemies throughout. Your history is not as simple as you think. Thanks!

Vietnam is a heroic nation. In his history. Vietnam can lose or win but never have the concept of giving up the country. Ho Chi Minh once said when mobilizing the people to fight against the French: ''O fellow national defenders. We wanted peace, but we made concessions, but the French colonialists encroached more and more. Because the French are determined to rob our country again. Are not ! We would rather sacrifice everything and refuse to lose our country. refused to be a slave '' Really touching . Ho Chi Minh traveled all over the world to find a way to save Vietnam. Ho Chi Minh's footprints appeared throughout 4 continents and returned to the Vietnamese national liberation resistance. What an extraordinary person! An American veteran who wrote a book called BARE FEET IRON WILL (2010) by James G. Zumwalt said .'' When I asked more than 200 Vietnam veterans who were still alive after wars and understood why Vietnam always wins against military superpowers, outperforming them so much no matter how long we win with them, we can. There is one thing that is always available in the DNA of Vietnamese people, which is the will of steel and never succumbs to all forces. They can live underground for 20 years at Cu Chi Tunnels. They can level the mountains to make up the Ho Chi Minh trail. They can withstand millions of tons of bombs. dioxin poison. napalm bomb. our boss bomb. They are truly a nation of heroes

@Rebecca Matthews more because of a tradition issue. One time vietnam sent their princess to marry Champa's king as a political diplomacy. But by tradition, when the king dies, his wife must go with him if she still lives, that didn't sit well with the vietnamese so they sent a group to take her back and Champa didn't like that

Some people in this cmt section and some other video said that in the end Dai Viet still loose becoz it had to pay tribute to the Mongol empire. Thats not true. Before the war (the 3 times) Dai Viet already agreed to pay tribute.. to avoid unnecesssary conflicts but thats not what the Mongol empire wanted. Thru out history Vietnamese kings always did this to avoid war and casualties for their people. They humbled themselves for the sake of the country and people. But NEVER when the sovereinty is endangered! Then they will fight to their last drop of blood. Then even after they butchered the enemy (for example the attack on Bach Dang River).. they still sent some letter and gifts afterward to "apologize for attacking" (instead of boasting "hey we beat you into pieces").. so that the enemy felt they saved "their faces".. feel appeased and stop attacking. For if they feel their pride offended.. they will attack again.. and eventhough Dai Viet wud win again.. thats not what the Kings and Dai Viet people wanted. All they wanted is PEACE.. until.this day the motto is Independance Freedom and Happiness. Thats what Vietnamese people have been fighting for thru out history.

What people rarely knows is in 1293, Kublai Khan assembled an army to invade Viet Nam for the 4th time; but he died before the invasion could commence. At the battlefield of Viet Nam, the Mongols had huge advantage as their army was able to remain intact before facing the main Vietnamese Amry. At other battle field like Central Asia, Middle East, Europe, the Mongols army had to dismount from their horses and scaled the ladders to fight over city wall and their army was decimated. However, in Vietnam battlefield there was no high and thick city wall that the Mongols had to attack one after another; a huge advantage for the Mongol army that world historian failed to understand or want to acknowledge.

Omar's "accidental" drowning was no doubt in retaliation to the killing of Vietnamese general Tran Binh Trong, who was caught and executed by the Mongols after the stronghold in Ha Nam - part of the rear echelon protecting the retreat of the Vietnamese king - was breached. Southern China was basically the same environment and weather as the Northern Vietnam so I don't know why some of you keep saying Vietnam won entirely by mother nature help. Northern Vietnam is cool in the spring and fall, but definitely cold in the winter. The Mongols obviously didn't even enter Vietnam during summer because they were not dumb. The cold seaason is exactly the same as during off-winter season in Mongol. Jungle diseases less likely will be transmitted. Mongols coupled up with most proven Chinese generals couldn't even scratch the surface against prince Tran Hung Dao which is recognized as one of the best tactician ever in world history. Vietnam still exists because we are not terrible tactically. They made something happened because they didn't fight in the obvious ways. Vietnam was able to attack and seize almost half of China more than once in history. They could do it more but only when they felt the need to do so. It completely dismisses the myth that they could only defense by nature help.

According to historians, known as the most violent barbarians in human history, the Mongols had been fully responsible for displacing the world populations and changing the face of human history through their widespread bloody massacres. Every inch on earth the Mongols passed, was greased with human fat and soaked with human blood. Scholars regard the Mongol conquest as one of the deadliest invasions in human history. In fact, it took Iran almost a century to recover its original peak population prior to the Mongols' invasion. Even the deadliest winters in Russia could not deter the Mongols from invading Moscow and Kiev. After their successful conquest of the Great Russia, the Mongols again repeated the great success with their powerful speed and maneuverability in addition to their lethal horsebows in the Battle of Legnica in 1241 known as the Battle of Liegnitz in Poland. The mighty Mongol army totally crushed the combined defending forces of European fighters, twice its size. The decisive victories in Poland and Hungary have become some of the most celebrated episodes in the Mongols world conquest, which showed the effectiveness of the Mongol war machine. Suffering the same fate as the European countries, West Asian countries including Iran, Iraq, Syria and Turkey one by one submitted to the powerful Mongol army. Sadly, China was not an exception. The Chinese Empire said to the mighty Mongol Empire, "Our Empire is as vast as the sea, yours is but a handful of sand." The Chinese had paid a deadly price for their arrogance they would never forget. The mighty Mongol army creatively went around the Great Wall of China, easily got inside and savagely massacred all the Chinese people, leaving a mountain of human skulls/bones outside the Great Wall that could be visible from miles away for years. According to historians, “Body [of the Chinese prisoners] stacked ‘like rotten logs’ littered the ground for more than 30 miles.” The mighty Mongol army led by the bloodthirsty commander Subedei continued to brutally burn, pillage, rape, and murder all the populations of 90 Chinese cities for over 6 months. As a result, unable to protect the Chinese people from the Mongols' attack, China's Great Wall has sadly become a historic symbol of China's eternal shame and failure. Finally, the mighty Mongol army conquered all of China in 1279 after Western Xia Dynasty, Dali Kingdom, Jin Dynasty and Song Dynasty all one by one shamefully surrendered to the Mongols. In less than 80 years, the unbeatable Mongol Empire successfully conquered half of the known world from West to East, including all of China. Continuing the ambitious dream of conquering the entire world, Kublai Khan immediately started the southward expansion where a small country known as Dai Viet (currently Vietnam) at the time was his first target. However, totally failing to achieve the great successes as seen earlier in the century, the unbeatable Mongol army met its match. In spite of having been fully equipped with thousands of well-armed warships, the mighty Mongol army of over 500,000 well-trained troops, led by the most brilliant and successful military commanders of all time with the greatest military strategy of Sun Tzu, was totally bitterly defeated, not once but three times (1258, 1285, and 1288) by the Vietnamese; and the decisive victory of the Vietnamese army led by Vietnamese Prince Tran Quoc Tuan against the invading mighty Mongol army in the bloody battle at the Bach Dang River in 1288 eventually brought an end to the Mongols invasion of Dai Viet as well as their ambitious dream of conquering the entire world. If having learned that the resilient Vietnamese people had successfully kicked out all of the 7 powerful Chinese dynasties (Qin, Dong Wu, Han, Song, Ming, Yuan, Qing) with their utterly failed attempts to assimilate the Vietnamese after the 1,000-year Chinese domination, the Mongol Empire would have never even thought of invading Vietnam.
