Dead pixels are for people too lazy to notice, or to lazy to return in the 15 to 45 day return window (which sucks big time for a 77 inch TV) But typically pixels are dead on arrival.

I think setting Output Dynamic Range to Full is also a important step while setting up a monitor. Sometimes it gets set to Limited. If you change that setting to Full. The Black Levels get huge improvement. It sort of makes bit washed out image less washed out.

Also change from 8bit to 10bit if available. I can't say i really noticed much, but the "math" is there and should produce a better color quality in theory. I guess it depends on the monitor but i can't see a reason to not activate 10bit if its there.

I watch to the point content like HUB as well as some more gimmicky reviews. Point is, channels that fill their content with over the top gimmicks such as the zealous (and often over righteous) rage like GN are good, and sometimes comedy/personality gimmicks like LTT are good. One simplest thing that got me once was black levels ("output dynamic range"). For whatever reason, the system just decided that it had to send out old TV levels to a modern digital panel, which resulted in bleak whites and washed-out blacks. Took me a bit to figure why it felt so wrong.

Great video! Everything from "noob" stuff to advanced covered in one go, excellent stuff! On a general note about brightness; Newer monitors often have really high brightness and might strain your eyes and create discomfort if set to 100%. If you're getting sore eyes and headaches after some hours, try lowering the brightness. A lot of people don't consider this and get sore eyes and so on without even realizing this could be the culprit. Worth a shot if (you reading this) are one of them.

Im surprised you didn't mention capping your fps 3-4 frames under your max refresh rate i.e 140 on 144hz monitor, 236 on 240hz etc and enabling vsync. On NV gpu you should do this in control panel since the driver version of frame cap can make your gpu run on more efficient voltages and use less power. Also NVCP Vsync works well with DLSS3 FG Many new PC users dont know these things

Also if enabling G-Sync for gaming, set the FPS of every game to -3 fps under the monitors refresh rate. If you leave it at, eg 144hz, 144fps it will flicker on/off constantly and can cause visual issues. Always set it under the HZ of the screen, -3 is enough to stop any flickering.

4:00 One other thing to check is the quality of your cable from the GPU to the monitor. I've had HDMI and DP cables of lesser quality that were not capable of delivering the resolution and the refresh rate the monitor was capable of. For example, I have a 1440p 240Hz gaming monitor, but one specific Display Port cable would only give me the option of 1440P 120Hz. I plugged in a different cable and it instantly gave me the option of 1440P 240Hz.

Aren't VRR technologies supposed to fix screen tearing and thus eliminate the need for V-Sync? I've also heard (and experienced) that V-Sync increases input latency, so I don't think suggesting it is always a good idea.
@christinaedwards5084
@christinaedwards5084 10 ай бұрын
Adaptive sync is for when you have a peculiar fps count. A 120hz display can use 30, 60 and 120 fps. A 144hzdisplay can use 36, 72 and 144 fps. So if you had 90fps, adaptive sync will negate the slideshow effect as what’s being displayed isn’t natural to the monitors refresh rate. The two are ‘out of sync’ , and this where adaptive sync comes in. Personally I rather just use v-sync and have a solid constant fps. It’ll be smooth. I play starfield with a 60fps v-sync cap . It feels as smooth as the 84 freesync I can achieve. Not only does it drop my power consumption by 100w but system noise and temps are massively reduced and the experience feels extremely comparable. I play single player games so I’m not trying to squeeze every frame out of my system. I’d rather have quality settings and a synced framerate.
@acatch22
@acatch22 10 ай бұрын
im confused, isnt the point of VRR to avoid tearing so you dont need vsync? and vsyc off means you dont have the 3 frame buffer latency?

Thanks for the video Tim. Would love if this channel expanded to review portable / smaller monitors. My desk space at home is quite limited and anything above 18 in just wouldn't work for me. There are a lot of portable monitors that market themselves as being "gaming" monitors but there's a lot of marketing BS that you have to wade through. I don't even need them to be really portable, I just need a smaller monitor that is good for gaming at a wide range of refresh rates. Some of these monitors have gained a lot of popularity, but I don't have a way to personally measure response times or input latency so having an independent reviewer reviewing some of that stuff would be very very helpful.

Mind you, customers should refuse to buy from such a company. Your local laws (country, not company or international) determine whether they can legally refuse, but it will still be put that they will refuse nonetheless, firstly "because we wrote it for OTHER countries too, so we totes are legal!!!!", but also they get away with it ("why would they be allowed to put it on their site if they were not allowed?!??"), but merely complaining is enough because they don't want a law that forbids them saying they have dead pixels to be passed, or case law that they are illegally and fraudulently doing so. The USA however protects companies, not customers, so customers are SOL unless they are wealthy enough to be a problem.

My Samsung Odyssey G7 (1440p 240Hz VA) has a weird issue with HDR enabled that causes it to randomly lose and re-gain input connection. Is it a DSC issue? I have proper DP 1.4 and it's also enabled in the monitor's settings, latest firmware, etc. But there is no DSC option in the monitor, so I had assumed it should be enabled by default. Also, a "gaming compatibility" guide could be nice too. You mention having VSync enabled with VRR in this video, but going into detail about how alternatives like locking to a certain frame rate (40 or 60 fps for a 120Hz display, 80 or 120 fps for a 240Hz display, etc) would be good for those looking maybe to save a bit of money/temperature while gaming on PC. Perhaps including the info into a "optimal AMD/Nvidia program settings" video could be an option to ensure a proper video length, I've followed a few guides for Nvidia Control Panel and all of them have had issues like causing problems when using multiple monitors or weird artifacting with particular games, I know they're not "one size fits all" but I'm sure the Unboxed alliance could come up with something helpful to newer PC gamers.

The HDR video is affected by the brightness slider and Nvidia overlay is the dull green in game (Dead Space). I'm wondering what I'm doing wrong. Do I need to change to windows 11 or something? Guess I'll just give up on HDR.

Enabling freesync on my monitor results in absolutely HORRID flickering. Is there a fix for this, or is it just a bad monitor/implementation. I'm pretty sure it advertised freesync certified. Kinda old, MSI Optix G24C.

Can you use a monitor (any type) by itself without a pc? Or do you need a pc for it to work?

There's no point. A monitor is just that: a video display. Its useless without a display source like a computer.

Long time ago when I was searching how to set up my new high refresh rate monitor with G-sync compatible in few places Ive read I should turn OFF V-sync in games as Free/G-sync collides with V-sync Also that I should set in nV panel max Hz -2 from what my monitor can do to assure it dont overdo it. Say my monitor is 165Hz but in windows it shows 164,something so if I set it at 163Hz it wont ever overclock itself

Guys, please help! I bought Cooler Master Tempest GP27U, every review i've seen people say it's one of the best gaming monitors for HDR and color accuracy but for me that's not the case. First of all when i turned it on the colors were awful like white for example appeared so reddish. Played a while with the colors to get it right then i tried the HDR. I have no idea if I'm doing something wrong but When HDR is on (monitor settings and from Windows) the brightness of the display goes very dim and colors get washed out a lot. Disabling HDR from Windows fixes colors and brightness. Any suggestions?

I had to chuckle at your PSA announcement about how unacceptable dead pixels are in this day in age. As someone who cleans/tests/repackages hundreds of desktop quality LCD monitors for remote workers, I have yet to come across a dead pixel on any of them. And that's including all the monitors that have suffered various stages of shipping abuse, rage-quit shove-in-a-box send backs, and simple bad packing. Then to purchase a top of-the-line gaming 4k monitor (not saying which brand lol) with 4 dead pixels within a week is just pure bad quality control and laziness and shame to any company that regards this as "normal and acceptable" I shall definitely send them your way if it ever happens again 😉

Wow, Win+Alt+B. Why didn't I google that and instead just clicked through the damn UI getting annoyed every time 🙈 Thank you for the tipp! I got a dead pixel on a former show case unit so I thought it was acceptable there. Maybe I should've tried anyway 😅 Well, too late now and I don't see it anymore.

@MonitorsUnboxed I changed my windows settings to my displays rated 240 hz. It was 60 hz. I am using displayport cable. My new monitor is the new ASUS OLED 240 hz glossy. My Elden Ring game then crashed loading up my save file. I tried verifying files and restarting my computer and the game still crashed. I then set the refresh rate setting back to 60 hz in windows and the game loaded up fine. So am I missing a setting? Do I need to change a setting in the game or on Steam?

when I got my new monitor here 1yr ago, I could not get the refresh rate set to 165, untill I went and bought a different HDMI cable, both the HDMI, and Display Port cables that came with it would not let me go to 165, it took allot of trial and error to figure that out, you would think for a 1200$$ monitor the cables would have worked. (max refresh I could get was 125 if I remember correctly.)

11:53 Sure, this shortcut "works" but only if you have enabled "XBox Game bar". For me this "bar" is annoying so I disabled it and "no shortcut for me" :(
