Just picked up a Neo G7 today because I wanted a 4k monitor to go with my 4080 and needed something I could use for both work and gaming. Have to say turning down an OLED was a tough choice but these Neo series seem like the best bet for anyone not interested in maintaining an OLED screen or multitasking for work. Microcenter running a great deal for the Neo G7 at about 800 right now.

Hey Tim, since we have a dedicated monitor channel, can we get a video on the state ultrawides? Maybe a basic breakdown of the options on the market worth considering, and what's coming in the future. Seems like the UW market has been pretty quiet for a while and I'm really hoping that we see more mid-priced options hit the market in the near future(my personal budget is $400-$600 for a 1440 120+, but the 'right' monitor can certainly influence that). LOVE that OLED Alienware - but dat OLED price tag though, and the locked firmware is tough to swallow with that price(this would be a pretty damn long term purchase for someone like me, if that ever happened)
@erikhendrickson59
@erikhendrickson59 2 жыл бұрын
OLED will continue to decrease in price, as will monitors with increasing numbers of FALD zones. IMO, I would not purchase a display right now. HDR is seriously awesome and it'll be impossible for me to go back to an SDR-only setup (it's like a performance-free graphics upgrade - games with proper HDR support look absolutely *stunning* on an OLED) One NEGATIVE I've found with my OLED is that it is NOT GREAT when playing games below 90FPS. All LCDs & OLEDs use a "sample-and-hold" method of displaying frames. On an LCD, there's a sort of natural motion-blur due to the slower pixel response times. On an OLED however, with the near-instant response times, this can result in a sort-of "stuttering" appearance to the image when doing things like quickly rotating an in-game camera. The C1's black-frame-insertion can help mitigate this in certain situations. Secondly, OLEDs are still lacking in total brightness capability. When it comes to something like displaying HDR content it's not really a problem because OLED can also display TRUE blacks, resulting in an extremely large perceptible contrast. But if you will frequently be using your display in a very bright room then OLED may not be the best choice for you (YET! They're getting better every year and the new QD-OLED panels are about 20% brighter than last year's panels) Also note that a _21:9 3440x1440 UW_ is roughly 26% more pixels than _16:9 2560x1440_ resolution and requires a good bit more horsepower to run at higher FPS. On the other hand, it's also roughly HALF the resolution of full _3840x2160 4k_. When I buy a display I expect to get *AT LEAST* five good years out of it. I did a LOT of research before I purchased my C1 OLED in regards to burn-in, "future-proofing," etc and I'm extremely pleased with the purchase.

@hugevibez
@hugevibez 2 жыл бұрын
There's an MSI version coming with the same panel, might drive down prices a bit and it might offer a flashable firmware too, so fingers crossed on that one. Also, if the subpixel structure or burn-in is a problem to you there's a flat panel AOC ultrawide with a very high number of zones, might be worth looking in to as well. I think there's some more miniLED stuff coming up but who knows when that will really release? Otherwise, previously premium displays like the lg 34GN850 are massively coming down in price due to the advent of good HDR monitors. Actually, that monitor would be my top recommendation for you, since it's way more reasonably priced now and offers great response times.

Love this overview. I’m sure there is a general interest in 1440p VS 4K in 2022 for gaming and productivity work, at 27” and 32”. I know other channels did this last year in regards to gaming specifically, but it seems like it’s time for an update. Some people insist there is a visible difference in things like text clarity between 4K and 1440p at 27”. Some don’t see it. For 32” more claim to notice a difference, but some regard it as minimal. I can see how this would be the case for FPS gaming, but visuals showing the difference for things like text clarity would be much welcomed.

I returned my Alienware AW3423DW because of the 2 annoying fans inside, ancient ports, bad reflection and poor subpixel layout. If you do gaming + watch videos only then the Alienware might be the ultimate monitor, but if you do 8 hours of office work a day it's a big fat no. Switched to a 42C2 and much happier now.. it was also cheaper at 950 euros. I'm waiting for a 38" UWQHD+ QD-OLED with 3840 x 1600 resolution. Hopefully combined with USB-C PD >65w, HDMI 2.1, better reflection handling, no gsync module (so no fans) and better subpixel layout to combat color fringing.

I was REALLY torn between the LG C2 42” and the AW3423DW. I ended up pulling the trigger on the C2 and I can safely say it was the best decision. I’m running most games on Ultrawide 21:9 mode with a custom resolution of 3840x1600. So basically playing at 4K resolution with the top and bottom cut out and in Ultrawide format. The experience is incredible. With the Alienware I would’ve been limited to just the 21:9. With the LG I get that plus 16:9 for games that don’t support Ultrawide. That and of course all the other sweet stuff that comes with a tv.

There's a video by TFT central on settings for the C2, and Tom the Tech Chap also had a settings section in his video I think. Otherwise there is a reddit post called "How to access LG Service Menu without the Service Remote", and that details how to turn off the auto dimming. Turning on HDR in Windows makes a big difference as well. I think that getting familiar with the settings and learning what they do is a big part of it, turning off the auto dimming, turning on HDR in Windows gets you most of the way there. I also stopped my PC from auto sleeping, but set the screensaver to be a blank screen after 15 mins...which stops the TV from losing signal and going to the super annoying gallery images.

I am still happy with the G8. The scanlines are not that much of an issue as they are not something you typically see, and in desktop mode you simply can use 120hz. I returned my Alienware AW3423DW going from a 4K monitor to the 1440p AW3423DW was not a great experance, games seem more blurry and not as sharp you can clearly see the difference from a 4K monitor with a less sharp picture on the Alienware, input lag was also terrible on the AW3423DW along with the 21.9 aspect ratio on a 34" screen which i found with you tube video etc intolerable with black bars either side of the screen, also with NO firmware updates ever i returned it and bought the Samsung Neo G8 and i love it, HDR in much more punchier than the AW3423DW with much brighter specular highlights in HDR mode on the G8 and the colors on the Neo G8 are just as good as the Alienware in my opinion as are the inky blacks if you are sat directly Infront of it, i feel the G8 is a much underrated Monitor and it will never burn-in, the reports of burn-in on the AW3423DW on reddit already also put me off, if i ever go back to an OLED monitor it must be 4K ideally a 32" monitor with a 16.9 aspect ratio, i have the LG CX OLED and love it but OLED as a monitor with static images is asking for trouble, the tech just isn't suited for monitors in my opinion i already had mild image retention on my AW3423DW when i returned it which was undefeatable with the pixel shifter.

Absolutely amazing video, I enjoy listening to your monitor breakdowns. The level of detail that you put into these comparisons and reviews are in a league of their own. I may be totally biased here, but I love my AW3423DW. The monitor works great for my usage case which is primarily desktop gaming, and is such a massive step up from a majority of "normal" monitors. The HDR, true blacks, and overall width of the monitor make games feel significantly more immersive than with an IPS panel at night where you can see the glow, or the "gray" blacks. I actually upgraded from an AW2721D which I found myself super impressed by due to the high refresh rate and G-Sync ultimate module. When I saw the 3423DW was being released though, I knew I had to have it. QD-OLED technology in monitor size, with 175HZ refresh rate is a crazy combo on paper, and is as good as it sounds IMO. Dell QC and support can suck sometimes though (speaking from experience with the 3423DW, my 2721D, and my M15 R6 all having varying issues) which I think is honestly the biggest drawback to this monitor. I think the C2 is fantastic in its own way, but the size wouldn't work for my setup at all, so the 3423DW was the logical choice for me.

Much more annoying are the firmware not being user-upgradeable and the OSD not having enough color calibration options (something that could have been fixed... with a firmware upgrade). That being said, the price was very good for the quality of the monitor imo and the actual experience of gaming on it has been outstanding. Hey Tim, I have the LG C2, and I don't understand why you never go into details on using only part of the C2 screen. I usually use it using the built in 21:9 viewing mode, that makes the resolution 3840x1600. In this mode, it only uses 75% of the pixels, which means full screen peak brightness isn't limited as much as 100%. However, I also use 1400p with this screen, effectively turning from a 42" 4K monitor into a 28" 1440p OLED. In this mode it only uses 45% of the screen, effectively keeping the brightness consistent from small window to full screen. Other than text clarity from pixel density or WRGB layout, this makes the screen untoucable in my opinion in flexibility. When I boot a full screen 4K game, it uses the whole screen, and when I go back to windows it is 1440p with higher brightness, and for some games where ultrawide is preferable, it can do that as well. And really, the pixel density of 4K at 42" is 110 pixels per inch, which is actually higher than a 24" 1080p monitor. I highly recommend you explore these options on the LG C2 as they allow you to have several monitor sizes in one display with different characteristics.

In sdr, there's no abl, the whole screen is just under 200 nits at any window size. In hdr, you gain negligible 30 nits going from 100 to 70% window. This plus the almost instant abl (a lot quicker than on the C1) made any brightness drop in hdr almost unnoticeable for me. Also, sadly the built-in 21:9 aspect ratio has not been implemented well, it's limited to 2560x1080 (stretched). I like the 16:9, but if you prefer 21:9, custom resolution will be better. Don't get too hung up on the numbers - the nits dropping with window size. In real usage, 10% window is dispersed in many highlights. We're unlikely to hit above 30% in games, only if there's a cutscene with white background you might close to 100%.

Samsung is so notorious for QC now that I'm simply afraid of buying a Neo G9, since the moment it died, they've refused to do advanced RMA (send new before returning old) and I had no box (you don't keep a 49" box with you). It was cheaper and easier to write off a $2k display and never buy Samsung again, than to deal with Samsung support loosing time and money at large (and it was business model with "special support"). I saw one review of the Asus now and it's apparently super-low lag, fast 138Hz version of LG C2 42 with monitor features added on...

I bought the Neo G8, returned it due to a flicker with the DP and scan lines at 240hz. Picked up the G7 and had it calibrated last night. Its absolutely stunning. Death Stranding and Cyberpunk both look unbelievable. The curve is a none issue as I sit fairly close. So I would recommend this monitor for gamers with a healthy budget (IE card that can push the frames to match the refresh rate and 4k native resolution) I am however concerned about long term reliability. For now its incredible.

Hi @TravelDude Are you still happy with the G7 after 6 months? I'm considering buying it. It's really hard to find a monitor that has ~32" 4k and good text quality for programming combined with high refresh rate and HDR for watching movies and gaming. I'll be switching from Dell S3220DGF - 32" 1440p 165 Hz curved VA - so I like this form factor, but my main problem is low resolution at only ~90 PPI, which I don't find good for working with text and multiple windows side by side.

The fight between the Alienware, and the C2 for me, came down to a multiple week shipping estimate for the alienware, and the C2 immediately available for pickup in a local store. I've had no regrets so far about picking up the C2, and find that I'm loving the extra vertical screen real estate that the C2 offers, even though I was previously a huge fan of ultrawides. My only complaint is that games at 16:9 tend to blow up the centre portion to be bigger, rather than ultrawides which feel more "zoomed out" due to having more space around the sides. What would be really cool is if I could run the C2 at 3840x1646, with the top and bottom blacked out, and get ultrawide performance for games. This works for movies of course, but games stretch the image and completely ruin the attempt. Ah well. It's still the most gorgeous display I've owned to date. I can't imagine anyone not being happy with a purchase of this (unless you really needed DP)

I run games at 3840x1620 with black bars on my C2 all the time, it works great to simulate an ultrawide. You just need the right settings, check the recommended settings guide on the OLED gaming subreddit.

Not gonna lie I found the repeated use of AW3423DW quite distracting and annoying while watching this very helpful video. A few times you just called it the “Alienware” which you should have done the whole video. It can’t have been easy to say AW3423DW like 50 times during this video. Just keep it simple there was only one Alienware monitor in this comparison. No one was going to be confused.

I came to the same conclusion in regards to productivity usage. None of the highest end monitors right now are suited for web browsing or writing code. It’s unfortunate that with all the wonderful technologies (QDOLED, OLED, miniled) available, none of the monitor vendors is making a standard size (27/32’) 4K 16:9 144Hz non curved product.

just imagine a 48 or 42 like a ultrawide - but with the top and bottom parts included - I love my 48 c1 - mounted to my desk on a monitor arm. I use mine for work - dividing my screen into 3x24 inch screens with another 3 smaller screens for apps or notes - all on one display - then when work is done - it provides extremely immersive gaming or movies - the responsiveness and motion clarity is also incredible - even at 4k@100fps - the image is clear, smooth and responsive.

One of the key issues with the Alienware is the presence of a fan, it is audible even at low RPM, when consuming content it's not an issue but when working can be distracting at times. I disagree with the "only for gaming" take on this monitor tho, the fringing is visible only in very specific circumstances, while the exceptional screen uniformity really helps with dark text editors (good luck using a Samsung VA for coding).

Just got mine in and it's honestly a deal breaker that I heard no one talking about before hand. It has two fans, one that makes a constant and annoying hum and another that surges and 'breaths' with a blowing fan noise in very sudden bursts. The tuning on both seems so bad it actually is boggling to me. It's such a shame, because I love the display but the noise is just too much for me.

Unfortunately, like high-refresh-rate gaming, I've been spoiled by OLED HDR. I don't think I can ever go back to using a display without HDR capability. In games with _proper_ HDR support it's basically a performance-free graphics upgrade AND one of the only means of "upgrading" (for lack of a better word) the graphics capability of a console. One additional note: all inputs on the C2 OLED are HDMI 2.1 (there are NO DisplayPort inputs.) This means that you will require a 30-series NVIDIA/60-series AMD GPU or better to get the full 4k@120Hz functionality. On the other hand, since it's a television, the C2 will play very nicely with consoles with its standard 16:9 aspect ratio and HDMI2.1 inputs.
