When I learned that these dual mode monitors don't use integer scaling for 1080p mode for some unknown reason (even though it's literally perfect 4:1 pixel scaling) I immediately lost any interest I had in them. The idea of dual mode monitors is very cool, but the lack of basic common sense among monitor manufacturers is baffling.

I just dont understand the appeal of 1080p especially on a screen that big. If you have the horsepower to get good frames @ 4k everything maxed for a demanding title - then you can get 240+ fps @ 1440p for a competitive way less demanding game. The secondary resolution needs to be 1440p for this to be something i want. It's something ill get exited about in a few years for a 8k 120hz / 4k 240hz beast

@@misaroorasimProbably because integer scaling algorithms have almost never been used by tv and monitor manufacturers. 1080p using bilinear (or whatever it is) scaling also looks more appealing with non-gaming content. All these features and modes (any monitor feature or mode) should be controllable from the computer. You can already ask for basic details via edid, what's needed is a standard protocol to enumerate features and what 'values' that feature can accept and what category of feature it is (need an other for things the protocol makers don't think of) We already have 2way communication with monitors, but a simple standard protocol for these things would enable some fairly significant quality of life improvements.

If you take due precautions, black screen saver after two minutes, dark mode, pixel refresh, you don't really have to worry too much. Like many other commenters, I can't stress this enough having dual mode without integer scaling is a total waste. If I wanted blurry/interpolated 1080p there are a ton of options like software filters, custom resolutions to scale down from, even TAA or FXAA lol. Dual mode unless it scales to a non-integer scalable res like 1440 -> 4K should always use integer scaling when possible or at least give you the option to select the scaling algorithm. 4K/1080p dual mode should feel like you have a native 4K + native 1080p monitor in one. Having an integer scaled 1080p mode could even enable use cases for integer scaling 1080p on console games which don't support integer scaling onboard the console.

It really doesn't particularly matter how acceptable a non-integer scaled image is. The main original pitch of these monitors, and the reason it's 4K to 1080p and not some other combination, was perfect scaling. Not getting that part right, like others have pointed out, is just baffling. You'd think the hardware would be the hard part, not the process of choosing the common sense scaling algorithm.

@@GrainGrown Think it’s a matter of generational change. After 720p and 1080p it became unpractical with the higher Numbers. 4K actually have no meaningfull information about the actual resolution for someone that don’t know it already. At least 720p/1080p/1440p/2160p tells you the vertical res. So in my personal opinion 2k/4k/8k is kinda totally taken out of context. Had to turn the ASUS to almost 100% in SDR where my LG sits at 45% lol. When in HDR mode it's a bight brighter though, espcially the colors. I'd say if I'd only game on my monitor the ASUS would be fine as the colors and general performance are great. If you do any work too though I don't recommend it and I'm sending it back. @@art6sense Hi. Thanks for your advice. I bought it from Amazon in the US. I'm not too familiar with integer scaling so I can't confirm that but I have read from others online that this monitor does not utilize it. While running FHD @320hz the display is not quite as sharp for texts/icons as my second monitor is with true native 1080p. I wouldn't call it "blurry" but you can tell its almost like looking at an old 1080p TV. I usually keep it in 4k mode unless I boot up a game that needs high refresh rate for an advantage. The blacks in this monitor look decent but there is obviously some very slight backlight bleed since it's an IPS panel. I personally decided it's not worth investing in an OLED panel due to the risk of burn in over a dual monitor like this which is great for both work and gaming. Check out monitor unboxings review of this screen, his advice on setting different OD values between modes is spot on 👍

@@art6sense Why would you prefer to keep it in 1080p/320hz mode more frequently over the 4k 160hz mode? For general use, I don't think the frame rate difference is honestly that noticeable going from 144/160 to 320. The picture/text quality is much more superior in 4k. Maybe this monitor is not for you but just food for thought.
When will we see a 4k 240hz monitor, 160 has been going on for years now, my LG GP950 is 160. 4k 240hz 1080p 480 would be cool.

TLDR: 500$ 4k 160hz/1080p 320hz IPS with basically no HDR since HDR400 is just marketing bullshit speak for "basic high contrast stuff". BTW ROG sucks since they absolutely refuse to address their braindead fuckups such as buggy profiles that don't switch monitor protection and other settings when you switch between them and normal crosshair being adjustable while the "sniper" one with zoom is not, although it's the exact same feature.

Dual mode is a gimmick, does not look sharp in the alternative res due to pixel layout. I would much rather buy a 1440p 360-480 Hz monitor and use DLDSR to downscale 4K rather than buying a 4K monitor to lower res to 1080p which looks terrible on a 32 inch panel anyway.

Bro you really want to be playing at 720p? This works because it's a 4:1 scaling ratio. Only 720p scales that way into 1440p

Why would they not use integer scaling? It's really stupid. It would look better, run faster (because it's simple) and Dough (yes that scamming company) already has integer scaling in their monitors. Pathetic job by Asus here.

I bet in a year the dual mode (at least the 4K160->1080p320 variant) is going to become obsolete when they release a 4K 320Hz panel.

Name me one consumer graphics card that will be able to play games at 4k with a consistent 320fps A gpu that can handle that won't be a thing for a very long time. It will be unbelievably expensive when it is a thing. Finally, a 4k 320hz monitor would be at least $1,500.. this is $500 with dual mode..

Bruh. There are AAA games on the PS5 that run natively at 720p60. And there are PC games that you cant get more than 1080p60 even on RTX 4090. Big companies failing to optimize their games is not preventing me from enjoying high refresh rate screens. You still get lower input lag and less screen tearing.

if it means that much you could put a glossy protector over it
@JayJayYUP3 ай бұрын
@@Soandnb Lol the point of glossy isn't because I like a reflective screen, adding a gloss screen protector would be the same logic like games using TAA to solve anti-aliasing issues, but blurring the entire game. What a ridiculous take.
@Soandnb3 ай бұрын
@JayJayYUP do you say this as someone who has actually tried it? Because I do. I had a drawing tablet with a worn-out screen protector. I ordered a number of screen protector samples to try out and get a feel for their drawing surfaces. When I applied the glossy protectors, they massively improved the pixel clarity of the screen, even though they were on top of the factory matte protector. And the reason this works is because the optical adhesive used fills the rough surface of the screen, allowing light to transmit much more cleanly. But if you don't believe me, you can buy a sample pack for $7 from Photodon, where I got my new tablet protector from.
