As the parent of an autistic son, I really appreciate this episode. My son is still very young, and not as severely autistic as this boy, but we still struggle with communication and trying to understand his needs and how best to help him navigate a world that's not built for him. The last scene of this episode, where the parents are thrilled when their boy looks House dead in the eye while handing over his game console, makes me cry. It's so true. When my son looks me in the eye, choosing to pull himself out of that rich inner world in order to share some moments with me, it is the most wonderful feeling in the world. Here's how social interaction works for me-both sides have a screen showing what's happening and both can make decisions but neither can make a decision while the others is already in affect, the old man makes most of the decisions as the little boy doesn't know what to do most of the time- however if things get too emotional the little boy presses the only buttons he knows: cry and scream, this cuts the old man off from running interference and forces him to take a back seat, but if things develop behond the little boy's' control and crying and screaming doesn't work he shuts his side down for a random amount of time, leaving the old man alone and in control to do whatever he needs to do to fix the situation atm and get things back to normal *AGAIN*

i can only assume he only had a block of time to use the scanner, but, as a doctor, you would think Foreman wouldve knew better than to try and snatch away an autistic child's coping mechanism. it's been a long time, but i remembered i never really liked Foreman because he felt like the least patient and empathetic doctor House ever had on his team...which is ironic because House was the infamous doctor w/ no patience at all and all the sarcasm in the world within the hospital. Foreman also had the habit of allowing his personal prejudice cloud his diagnoses like when that homeless woman was brought in and Foreman just chalked up her behavior as "shes lying" and "trying to take advantage of the hospital for bed and free food" when in actuality she couldve died because she got inflicted w/ rabies iirc

My son has autism, granted not to this level he's high functioning but the reactions are similar, especially in a hospital setting, getting my son to get a flu shot can be a battle, this episode did a good job in the portrayal.

@@l.a.3479 I implore you to seriously consider what you just said, because it honestly reminds me of something an autism speaks mom has said to me. Many parents are well meaning, but you don’t look to parents of autistic people as your main source of information. You look to autistic people. What you said was genuinely very hurtful. As well meaning as many parents are, looking at them as the authority on the subject as opposed to the people themselves is very condescending and demeaning. If you actually looked into what I said instead of just saying it’s fine because it’s what the parent of an autistic person said, you’d see that this is how the autistic community as a whole generally feels about such terminology. If I don’t say anything when I see a parent of an autistic child using terms that are harmful to the community, how else are people going to know? And if the parent really is all that well meaning, then they will want to know. If someone doesn’t, that’s what’s concerning. Making the mistake is one thing, but being mad when it’s corrected? That’s when it becomes actual ableism.

Okay, let's talk about transitions with children diagnosed with ASD. If you want to take the game away, say, "Adam, I'm taking this in 3-2-1," and take it. Being consistent with behavior training won't put these kids into panic mode. You've gotta start young with behavior training. Dr. House did the right thing with his communication board but should've said, "Point to what you ate." Also, use two-word demands as often as possible. Stand up. Sit down. Follow me. Walk here. All kids (and grownups) respond better to two words than lengthy sentences. Try it! Tell your husband to "wash dishes." He'll hear you.
