I was taught this over 50 years ago. As a graduate teaching assistant at LSU, I taught this procedure to Speech 101 students. It is vital to understand this before you hear a political speech, or decide which breakfast cereal to buy at the grocery. It relates to understanding PROPAGANDA.

I could never be a sales person unless I truly believed in a product. Great advice that this should be used for ethical purposes rather than manipulating people for sales.
@alexanderlyon4 жыл бұрын
So glad you picked up on that, Allison. I always get weirded out when salespeople try to pressure me and put me in a corner. It feels gross and I want no part of it. I think it's 100% okay to tell our story and invite people to participate, even in a compelling way. But, then, I believe we should give them space and leave it up to them to make their minds. To me, there's a huge difference between general marketing-type messages and "closing" techniques (which I don't like at all, if you can tell). Thanks for your comment.

Hi Kim. Yes, 100% and I'm glad you asked. In fact, I recommend stacking up 2 to 3 attention grabbing techniques in the opening of a presentation. It takes a bit of practice and creativity to get the right order and get the different techniques to build on each other effectively. But, it's worth it. Thanks for this video. it helps me so much. the topic that i have chosen it "Should all intern be paid for their work?". Do you think its a good topic ?
@alexanderlyon3 жыл бұрын
It all depends upon your call to action at the end. If you can ask your listeners to do something specific right there and then, it'll likely work well. If, however, you just want them to think about what you said or merely change their minds, then it may not work well because that's not usually a concrete enough action for the 5th step of the sequence.
@ireneogutu40354 жыл бұрын

Would "implementing body cams on all police officers in the United State of America" be a good topic for Monroe's Sequence?
@alexanderlyon5 жыл бұрын
Could be a good topic for this sequence. It depends on what you want from your listeners at the end. If you're asking them to do something specific, then it could work. If you're just trying to get them to change their minds generally, then it might not be the best choice. So, decide what you'd like your audience to do at the end. What are you persuading them to do? Let that determine how you structure it.
@mike_martin09205 жыл бұрын

I see where you're going. Typically, you'd want your action step to go beyond just believing and move to a more concrete action or behavior. In other words, asking people to change their minds does not sound like it goes far enough. The action step is about doing something, a first concrete step.

@alexanderlyon4 жыл бұрын
If it were me, I'd not script it out word-for-word. It's hard to sound natural that way. I recommend talking points (not full sentences). Also, practice it as if you are imaging a slightly different listener each time (e.g., young or old, male or female, beginner vs experienced, etc.) so each time you explain it while practicing, it sounds a little different. Eventually, reduce your talking points down to just a few key words for each point. Above all, don't try to memorize specific wording or phrasing. Just internalize the key points.

It's all about the action step. What can you ask listeners at the end that's a clear first step? If you have a clear action step, the it should work. And, this topic does sound like it could be a good fit for this model. But, if you're doing this for a class assignment, of course, run it by your teacher.
