I was taught this over 50 years ago. As a graduate teaching assistant at LSU, I taught this procedure to Speech 101 students. It is vital to understand this before you hear a political speech, or decide which breakfast cereal to buy at the grocery. It relates to understanding PROPAGANDA.

I could never be a sales person unless I truly believed in a product. Great advice that this should be used for ethical purposes rather than manipulating people for sales.
@alexanderlyon

So glad you picked up on that, Allison. I always get weirded out when salespeople try to pressure me and put me in a corner. It feels gross and I want no part of it. I think it's 100% okay to tell our story and invite people to participate, even in a compelling way. But, then, I believe we should give them space and leave it up to them to make their minds. To me, there's a huge difference between general marketing-type messages and "closing" techniques (which I don't like at all, if you can tell). Thanks for your comment.

Quick question: For the attention grabber can one use both rhetorical questions and statistics?
@alexanderlyon
@alexanderlyon 6 жыл бұрын
Hi Kim. Yes, 100% and I'm glad you asked. In fact, I recommend stacking up 2 to 3 attention grabbing techniques in the opening of a presentation. It takes a bit of practice and creativity to get the right order and get the different techniques to build on each other effectively. But, it's worth it. I find that a single quotation or single statistic often goes by too fast to have the desired impact I'm hoping for. Great question!

@alexanderlyon
@alexanderlyon 3 жыл бұрын
It all depends upon your call to action at the end. If you can ask your listeners to do something specific right there and then, it'll likely work well. If, however, you just want them to think about what you said or merely change their minds, then it may not work well because that's not usually a concrete enough action for the 5th step of the sequence.

Would "implementing body cams on all police officers in the United State of America" be a good topic for Monroe's Sequence?
@alexanderlyon
@alexanderlyon 5 жыл бұрын
Could be a good topic for this sequence. It depends on what you want from your listeners at the end. If you're asking them to do something specific, then it could work. If you're just trying to get them to change their minds generally, then it might not be the best choice. So, decide what you'd like your audience to do at the end. What are you persuading them to do? Let that determine how you structure it.

I'm no so sure. The last step is action. So, what action are you trying to get your audience to take? In other words, what is your "ask" of them? If you don't have a clear step for them to take, then I don't see how it fits this framework. Maybe but I can't tell that from your question if it fits.

It's a great topic but what would be your call to action? What would you ask listeners to do at the end? You don't have to answer me. I'm just giving you questions to consider. Good luck!

Hi Alex, My name is Adnan. I'm 22, I'm a Sales Agent and this is my first ever corporate job. I'm creating a script based on the Monroe Model and I had a question regarding the script. How do I make the script sound natural? Your videos have really helped me in improving my communication skills. Thank you.
@alexanderlyon
@alexanderlyon 4 жыл бұрын
If it were me, I'd not script it out word-for-word. It's hard to sound natural that way. I recommend talking points (not full sentences). Also, practice it as if you are imaging a slightly different listener each time (e.g., young or old, male or female, beginner vs experienced, etc.) so each time you explain it while practicing, it sounds a little different. Eventually, reduce your talking points down to just a few key words for each point. Above all, don't try to memorize specific wording or phrasing. Just internalize the key points.

Thank you very much! Your video really helped me a lot. If my topic is "Homelessness is the result of choice", is it a good choice for my presentation?
@alexanderlyon
@alexanderlyon 4 жыл бұрын
It's hard to say. It doesn't sound like it on the face of it. Are you trying to change your listeners' minds or behaviors? What would your call to action be at the end? What concrete step would listeners' take in the last part of the presentation? You don't need to answer these questions for me. These are questions for you to consider.

Great video! I loved the visuals and the example. I have a persuasive speech coming up, and I was thinking about using "Social Distancing" as my topic. Would this follow Monroe's sequence?
@alexanderlyon
@alexanderlyon 4 жыл бұрын
Yes, I think that is a good "satisfaction" step with a clear call to action at the end. You'd just need to fill in the other parts but it sounds like good fit for this framework.

You're asking for a lot, Sidra. That's work you'll have to do yourself. I suggest you might start with a list of topics you are passionate about and issues that get you fired up and where you want to see changes made.

Hi Coach Alex, i need to prepare a presentation on persuasive speech, and my topic that i choose is " Young People Should Buy a House".. Do you think that topic can relate to Monroe's Motivated Sequece?. Thanks for the video and one more is, today is my Mum's birthday.. thanks Coach Alex..
@alexanderlyon
@alexanderlyon 4 жыл бұрын
That might work but the key is your call to action. Do you have a specific next step you can ask your listeners to take to buy home? If so, then it may be a good way to organize the message.

Interesting topic! Sounds good. It's all about the call to action. Do you have a call to action you can ask your listeners to do at the end? Something really concrete? You might want to pass your idea by your teacher for feedback.

persuasive speech on how "the customer is not always right', is this a Monroes motivated sequence?
@alexanderlyon
@alexanderlyon 5 жыл бұрын
I'm not sure. Are you asking your listeners to take a specific action at the end? Or, are you just trying to change the way they think? If you are trying to change the way they think, essentially to agree with you, then it might not be a good fit for Monroe's Sequence, which is designed entirely to motivate the listener to action. The last step is action so it all leads to that.

It's all about the action step. What can you ask listeners at the end that's a clear first step? If you have a clear action step, the it should work. And, this topic does sound like it could be a good fit for this model. But, if you're doing this for a class assignment, of course, run it by your teacher.
