My problem too is that the company doesn’t even go all in on clawdeen. Her doll has the cheapest hair even though she’s the main character, draculaura is the one who gets shown in promotional work. I get that draculaura is the fan favorite but if that’s the case like either make her the main character or promote clawdeen more. I like the idea of clawdeen being a main character but how Mattel handles her feels so racist(saying this as a mixed race afro-Latino) they completly changed her to the point she’s unreconizable even tho draculaura and Frankie stayed pretty similier to their g1 selves, that’s not mentioning how she gets drawn as light in the 2D art and is now made to be biracial instead of monoracial Black to be more “inclusive” even tho aside from draculaura none of the other white characters had their race changed their all monoracial white (I’m not counting lagoona or Abby as Abby was always Asian while lagoona was heavily implied to be a woc), it just makes her being a main character feel a lil sucky since she doesn’t even get to be herself she gets changed and made to Appel more to white people

Sometimes, the fans just have to accept change and this is a whole new generation separate to the old one with the same characters but different storylines and identities. Is it my cup of tea? Their was literally a movie called Freaky Fusion where were were introduced to several charters that were mixed and they chose not to use them. Disabled characters are out the window (as far as I seen so far). I don't know why and maybe I'm the only one who was annoyed that they made ghoulia talk and the fact that Deuce is literally wearing regular glasses instead of sunglasses. All of those are things they disregarded and that's why people who were fans from jump are angry. We're not angry that they made Frankie enby, we care that they threw out a butt load of characters that also represent what being accepted meant. The transphobia related to Frankie being non-binary and Fatphobia towards Draculaura’s new design definitely needed to be called out more by popular Monster High collectors/doll influencers. Some folks definitely did speak out like Xcanadensis and Clawdeena, but there definitely could have been more support by creators especially since a lot of them were invited to the premiere. @@danielmendes8975I’m not co-signing everything they’ve ever done. I’m giving them credit for what they did in those incidents. Xcanadensis has repeatedly advocated for lgbt and racial issues. Mattel as a corporation can have issues but also be working towards improving their brand. It’s not a 0 or 100 thing nor will it ever be. I can’t speak to whether Clawdeena is racist or not. I’m not here for witch trials where creators aren’t allowed to grow and evolve. If she did something, hold her accountable for that incident, but if you’re just spreading hearsay, realize you’re not actually being an advocate of the issues but a gossip. I wasn’t there to see those incidents, and I don’t think a person emulating a doll’s hairstyle is a cancelable offense. Not everyone is going to pass your individual purity test as an ally.

Ancient Egyptian, there's no real modern equivalent since Egypt has been conquered multiple times over since she would have been mummified but she definitely would not be white by modern standards and DEFINITELY wouldn't be nearly as pale as the live action movie cast her. The timeline given by G1 makes zero sense, but given her name and according to the G3 cartoon she lived during Greek colonization, so assuming she was also aristocracy in life she would most likely have some Greek mixed in as well, but ancient Greeks didn't look like modern Greeks either (they regularly described themselves as having bronze skin - whether this was describing the color or some other similarity is unclear). Egyptian aristocracy had varying amounts of Egyptian vs Greek heritage during that era, but based on her looks I'd say Cleo leaned heavily Egyptian in every adaptation but the live action one.

Because the original Egyptians were black people and the colonizers like Cleopatra were still Egyptian but only by nationality because I was shocked to find out that Queen Cleopatra was technically a Caucasian woman from an incestuous Macedonian bloodline. Honesty, fr. The inclusivity is not a problem in the new gen, that should never be ur point of criticism, my main problems were the fashion, how they handles witchcraft and it meaning many of their older characters cant exist now(like Casta Spell), and a lot of the character derailment. I like characters being interpreted new ways and shit, but i was so upset they straight up changed the fundamentals of some of em. I wished they leaned into Clawdeen's confidence rather than trying to take it away, I would haver been ecstatic if she was the queen lesbian so many of the fans interpret her as. I'm mad they took Cleo's original characterization away as a complicated but developing person who wasn't just a mean girl who got snappy without prompting before knowing you and was someone with trust issues and a defensive persona but would care about you deeply and be incredibly loyal if she did trust you. Honestly, I was frustrated they took some of that away. It could be bias but i thought that they were really important to represent for young people, I wish they had old Clawdeen as a role model of confidence and strength. I really relate to cleo and it sucks that they changed an important example of someone who's been hurt and is distrusting still being able to be happy after trauma and its effects. I want to see it be better, we should have new gens not to rewrite but to fix and improve.

As a nonbinary Monster High fan thank you so much for talking about this Harri, because you're absolutely right no one's talking it. Ever since we started getting a look into G3 of Monster High the fandom has been so openly toxic and it's really frustrating especially as people don't want to talk about it or even admit there's a problem. People definitely aren't taking the colorism in the live-action movies seriously, like I've seen people get genuinely pissed off at people for even talking about the colorism in the casting which is obviously really disappointing. For a community that supposed to be based around be yourself be unique be a monster they hate minority representation. People have been using the recent confirmation of the Clankie ship(Cleo X Frankie) to be openly homophobic and people have gotten mad over the fact that Twyla is canonically autistic in G3. These things need to be talked about especially because it kind of feels like at least a part of the fandom is turning into a bigoted echo chamber.

@@izzyc127 In all fairness Monster High has always had casting issues like this and people don't really criticize G1 of Monster High for it, actually in my experience people have gotten mad at me personally for even bringing it up. People are much less critical of G1 than G3 people get really mad at you for critiquing G1 in my experience. I think it bothers people less because it wasn't live action or people feel more justified ignoring it because it's not live action, but still I think the voice actor portraying the characters being appropriately casted matters. Until G3 Clawdeen wasn't being portrayed by a black voice actress which in my opinion is really weird and unsavory. A lot of the G1 characters have very stereotypical accents and are very rarely ever actually portrayed by voice actors who speak with those accents. I think people don't like critiquing it because the voices of the G1 characters are nostalgic, but it's definitely something worth talking about. Then there's the fact that a lot of the G1 characters lean into the territory of a racial caricature Isi Dawndancer being one of the best examples. I'll note that I'm white and can't really have a personal opinion on the portrayal of those characters, but I've based my opinion on how some of those characters are portrayed by what I've heard from POC. Anyway the point I'm trying to make is that the issue isn't that people don't want to criticize G3 people are more critical of G3 than G1. As a nonbinary transmasc guy, honestly seeing a nonbinary person being represented in one of my favorite shows (my mom never let me have the dolls even though I wanted them so bad), honestly, they never want any sort of marginalized community to be represented in any sort of way. Gender isn't binary, and neither is sex, as intersex people are very much here and often discriminated against by doctors wanting to make them look more binary when they are literal babies or generally not believing them because 'oh it's so rare'. Honestly, it just makes more sense to frankie to be enby, because honestly gender would probably feel different for you if you were put together with a bunch of different body parts and brought to life via electricity. Representation helps, even something that might seem as small as this, as it can help queer kids feel recognized and help them remember that it isn't inherently a deviant and adult thing to be queer.

Like I've had to explain to so many people that it's a good thing that Frankie isn't a walking stereotype or that being nonbinary is more than just a fashion statement. i remember doing a fancast for MH (out of fun) a while back. I fancasted a non-binary actor for Frankie (because I liked the concept of a non-binary Frankie). The CASUAL transphobia in the comments really scared me and made me wonder "What were these ppl really watching the show for: the aesthetic or the diversity?" because in NO WAY that a show which core message was "be yourself, be unique, be a monster" and had an aboriginal (Lagoona), arab/middle eastern/north african (Cleo), a black girl (Clawdeen) and a south asian (Abbey) in the core 7 ghouls, had ppl acting like that. On a side note: can we talk about how hypocritical the MH fandom is??? One minute they are crying that Jy Prishkulnik (Cleo's LA actor) isn't Egyptian but turn around and fancast ppl like Alexa Demie, Adriana Lima, Kylie Jenner, Ariana Grande, Sofia Carson, Lisa Manoban or Noami Scott as Cleo. Yeah, oh my god, I hate how much people shit on the choice of making Frankie nonbinary. I myself am a nonbinary teenager, and a while back, I started gaining a massive hyperfixation on MH cause of the movie news (the hyperfixation on G1 btw). And I gained a massive love for Frankie, especially since I already have a hyperfixation on frankensteins. I still had so many problems about the racism and colorism for the movie. But I was super happy at least that Frankie was made to be nonbinary and them casting Ceci since it helps normalize us. But the fact that I saw so many people harass Ceci for being casted as Frankie and Frankie being made enby pissed me off. I am so glad that you have talked about problems in the doll community, while I love fashion dolls and doll franchises like RH or MH, I feel like there's so many problems with these franchises, especially with race. as a nonbinary person, frankie being nb wasn't the most exciting thing to hear, especially since they are the only character who is nonbinary in the new series. trans people have been called "frankenstein" as an insult. I wish the only nb character in the series wasn't frankie. to me it reads as the same as double trouble from she-ra being the only nb character in that series, and its bc they are a shapeshifter. there doesn't need to be a non-human reason for being nonbinary! guess that just means its better to have more representation of nb people so that it doesnt fall into stereotypical tropes.. I began collecting the new Monster High dolls and I got Frankie first! I never was that into dolls, at least not since I was really young and now enjoy collecting. I think the cartoon is fantastic ngl, the movie is not for me either but I love having frankie as rep, I love that they have a trans masc actor in the role of frankie. That´s really sad because Monster High was always meant to have diversity not only racial but also sexual, it´s creator wanted it to be more explicit but Mattel wouldn´t let him so he kept finding subtle ways of implying the characters´ sexuality (supposedly each character´s color palette is their sexual flag) and I think he would have made Frankie a non-binary from the start if by the early 2010´s people were already more aware of this gender identity

Another thing that really pisses me off is the body types and glorification of G1. G1 of monster high featured insanely skinny characters that, as a kid who grew up with it and had friends who grew up with it, was really harmful. I know most doll likes have that issue but it wasn't great. And the justification was that "they were supposed to look like creepy skeletons" which I hate because it dehumanises skinny people and also caused more problems than a social commentary could ever make up for. People are calling Dracula plus sized, which wouldn't be an issue but she isn't. She's just not super skinny. The new drama around homophobia with Frankie and Cleo is also really frustrating as a lesbian.

And my thing is: Mattel still release the original dolls and have made it clear that g1 and g3 are in alternate universes. And in g1 universe Frankie is still a she/her and they use the original sculpts for the toys. So Frankie isn't even replacing her, they are just an alternate version of her. I wish I had This version of Frankie when I was growing up It also just make sense they would be nb since they are literally 15 days old at the start of the story and still learning about themself. i'm nonbinary and i cannot tell you what seeing a nonbinary character in a kids' movie could have potentially done for me as a child. i mean when i saw the trailer for the movie for the first time with my sister, even though i thought it looked mid, i screamed at Frankie saying they used they/them pronouns. i was a bit too old to get invested in monster's high when it first came out but I've always respected the concept and the character designs and now i love it even more that they're open to making characters lgbtq. so weird ppl r mad about it bc it makes total sense? trans ppl have related to the frankenstein's monster character/archetype for 200 years, it only makes sense to make one version of this character canonically trans/nonbinary-and putting them in a kids' movie on a major kids' network is also really groundbreaking. shame people blew it out of proportion and made it a problem when it sounds like it was the only casting choice that wasn't problematic.
