I've said this on twitter and i'm saying it here: i don't like that majority of adult cartoons are so heavy on the sexual, overly vulgar, somewhat disgusting aspects just bc they're allowed to be. also that majority of them are comedies when 96% them ain't funny. why cant we have a charming show where they just cuss. or even a serious show ab adult issues but it's animated! why are these not good comedies in the forefront of adult animation!??

What do you define as the forefront? I do not care about the majority of vulgar adult cartoons that are easily forgotten in a couple of years. The Simpsons and King of the Hill and Bob's Burgers are all long-running FOX sitcoms that are not vulgar like Family Guy and American Dad, but they do have some cussing and adult situations, obviously. Fox's most long-running current animated shows are usually at the forefront part of the time. When FOX Sundays have room to air newer animated shows with less longevity, like Bless the Harts or Duncanville, and Adult Swim's Rick and Morty and Netflix's Bojack Horseman and HBOmax's Close Enough have their time at the forefront of adult animation, I know it to be possible to make other animated shows for adults, sitcoms or otherwise, to follow these examples of adult cartoons that do not lean too far into vulgar humor on purpose. And if you still want to make another animated series not aimed at kids that is still funny and relatable, I would suggest looking at the Wilo Productions cartoons of Bob's Burgers, Central Park and The Great North because they are the best group of mainstream examples to which I can point today.

Bad examples to follow, good examples of what to avoid if you want to do something else like them: High Guardian Spice is the closest thing I know to "a charming show where they just cuss" but that is not a very good frame of reference because it has very bad bare-bones writing, and it was originally made as a show for kids, until Crunchyroll forced it to have some violent, mature content and dirty jokes to fit the age rating of their other brand of content. Final Space was a very cool animated sci-fi cartoon on TBS and Adult Swim that was not entirely a comedy. It had some comedic elements in Seasons 1 and 2, but then it got very serious and bleak in Season 3. That mood whiplash/cerberus syndrome might have cost Final Space its whole audience before it got cancelled and written off. It could have lasted longer if the tone was more consistent throughout the show, and Olan Rogers took his writing and voice acting for Gary Goodspeed more seriously from the beginning instead of bogging down serious adventure stories with Gary's wisecracks and moments of vanity. Big Mouth and Human Resources are animated shows about adult issues like puberty or depression, that somehow got a big audience and cult following despite how gross they are. Usually they are good at talking about adult issues and have creative ways to express it, but they also do not do the best job of executing it because Big Mouth is not a very serious show most of the time and because they do not know how to do it without shoehorning in vulgar gross-out or sex jokes every 3 minutes. In other words, these shows are not nearly as "mature" as they should be.

I still have to wonder, how can you tell which is which? How do you think you would classify some people like Mark Hamill and Thomas F. Wilson, who function like regular voice actors who do a lot of different character voices in the same or different tv shows and video games after being so well-known in live-action for the iconic roles they played in the original Star Wars trilogy and the Back to the Future trilogy? How would you classify Mae Whitman and Melissa Villasenor, who are known for some live-action films and television but have also been up for big roles in many animated shows and films of many different voices throughout the years? Jill Talley and Tom Kenny are mainly known for voice acting, but they got their start with comedic on-camera acting in The Mr. Show with Bob and David, and if you checked their imdb pages lately, they have also had some live-acting parts in some movies and television shows we forgot they had. Diedrich Bader and Stephanie Beatriz, they are known for playing main characters in the live-action television shows The Drew Carey Show and Brooklyn Nine-Nine, but most of their other acting credits are the many different character voices they do in animated films and television shows and video games. When my mom and I went to the 2017, 2018 and 2019 BronyCons in Baltimore, she used the word 'celebrity' so often that I knew we had no reason to not recognize your so-called "regular" voice actors for the celebrities that they are for playing our most favorite characters from My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic and Littlest Pet Shop 2012.

I immediately went "yup!" when I saw the title. Like the broken record I am, I think there's a major problem with art in general being devalued so it can be easily turned into a cheap commodity. Comics are hard work, so is animation. Both get judged by audiences without considering the sheer amount of time and effort it takes to make these things. Stepping off my soapbox early. And the anime industry's straight up ready to crash. That system is unsustainable.

I think it would be a good idea to support adult animated shows created by women like Bless the Harts, Duncanville, The Great North and Housebroken, but NOT Velma which must be unsupported at all costs. The other four shows may not always put their best foot forward humor-wise, but at least all of them try to tell entertaining stories with a relatable yet amusing variety of characters. Despite most of the Tobin family in the primary ensemble cast being male (except Moon is a male character with a low female voice), The Great North has a much larger presence of female characters and voice actors in its supporting cast than Bob's Burgers and Central Park. Housebroken took on a very interesting, bold experiment in Season 1 where it was a serialized storyline with many continuing plot threads for the ensemble. When that did not work, they switched to more episodic storylines in Season 2 while still referencing and remembering some of Season 1's events, and that new writing plan turned out to work much better for the show that Housebroken is. Housebroken barked up the wrong tree of writing formats in Season 1, but they landed on their feet almost purr-fectly when it came to writing Season 2. I hope Season 3 continues to write and direct like Season 2.👍👍🐶🐱😻

Majority of the time, the reasons why you're also not seeing a lot POC working in the American industry - it because a lot of us have grown up and are being raised by strict parents who keeps on pressuring all of us to go to college and work in a "professional, mature job fields" that was being pushed onto us at a young age like doctor, lawyer, and teacher but when you actually tell them what you really want to do whether it animation, singer, or VA they think it "it doesn't pay more" or "childish and immature" not realizing that we're begging to be included in the work field and on screen, hence why the industry still has a lot of cishets, whites, men, NT, and riches in the field, continuing to keep on creating a lot of problematic contents about minorities (POC, LGBT, ND, and women) they have no experience and no idea about our struggles , when minorities like us want to create the contents ourselves to make it less problematic, and not too stereotypical.

My family has and still is pressuring me to get into nursing school when I don't want that, and think I shouldn't be wasting my time on "childish cartoons" when those could pay me more than what doctors are paying me to do. When it comes to celebrity voice acting, I feel like it's more of who is actually willing to treat voice acting as an actual craft rather than reading lines off a script. There IS potential for celebrities to be really good voice actors so long as they have actual direction and respect for the craft. Studio Ghibli's english dubs have lots of celebrities voice acting and they're surprisingly very good at what they do (i.e. Christian Bale voicing Howl, Kirsten Dunst voicing Kiki and Emily Blunt voicing Nahoko from The Wind Rises)

Several years ago, Chris Rock literally said in an interview that he thinks voice acting is easy because all he has to do is sit in a studio and read out some lines. This made a lot of voice actors and animation fans MAD. [And it's ironic since chris's role as the talking zebra wasn't even the good or memorable part about madagascar.] If you're going to use celebrities that aren't voice actors to voice act, at least make sure they can fit and sell the roles. [There is a huge difference between someone like chris pratt voicing mario and someone like lana condor voicing ruby gilman. Chris pratt, however problematic he is, will never have a hard time finding and getting roles - he was the worst part about the mario movie. Lana condor, on the other hand, has to take up voice-acting roles because there are not enough acting roles for her to get and not enough roles people are willing to give to her. Jack black doesn't have a hard time getting roles but he puts a lot of effort into the characters he voices. Beyonce and jackie chan get voice-acting roles simply because they are famous, even though their voice-acting is very bad. Comparing the voice-acting in Nimona to the voice-acting in Ice Age and Rio is like comparing night and day.] Regarding villains in stories, i have mixed feelings on how people are reacting to that. Stories like turning red, encanto, lady and the tramp, and elemental do not need villains and having clear-cut villains in those stories would ruin them. Big hero 6, on the other hand, would have benefitted from having a straight-up villain since it was a superhero movie. Twist villains can work when done properly. The first frozen movie, coco, and zootopia did it arguably good. The second mulan movie, not so much. Humanizing villains is hit or miss. I know a lot of people love the Maleficent movies, but she doesn't work as a sympathetic anti-hero villain like the wicked witch of the west does in wicked. Hades can actually work as a sympathetic villain because he's literally been wrongfully branded as the bad guy (when the real bad guy is zeus). [People only familiar with the disney peter pan animated movie would complain about hook's portrayal in peter pan and wendy, but people familiar with the peter pan books actually confirmed that hook's and peter pan's relationship is actually more accurate in peter pan and wendy than in the animated peter pan movie.]

What you said about Lana Condor in Ruby Gillman also applies to Karen Fukuhara. She is a Japanese-American woman who has high-profile roles in the films Suicide Squad and Bullet Train, and the Amazon streaming series The Boys, yet she also takes up playing animated characters in Craig of the Creek, She-Ra and Kipo and the Age of Wonderbeasts.
@medtle1
@medtle1 11 ай бұрын
@@adamkalb1 I am not familiar with the bullet train and the boys but I am familiar with suicide squad. [If it is the version of the movie I think you are talking about, she deserved way better than how the movie treated her and her character. How is it that they got a Japanese woman to play a female Japanese character but then they messed it up by making the movie so bad? If she didn't managed to get other better roles, her acting career would have been destroyed by that movie. I didnt know she voiced a lot of animated characters.] Basically every asian disapora actor and voice actor has to do this kind of hustle. [It is why asian-american actors like lucy liu and james hong reprised their roles in the kung fu panda tv show, but not any of the other actors that voiced characters in the movies. While eugene Lee yang is more known for being a try guy and a former buzzfeed employee, he was already doing that kind of hustle to begin with and in his interview with the youtube channel them, he said that he expressed to his agent manager that he wanted to try more voice-acting roles. That is why while his character in nimona does sound similar to him, you didn't hear or see Eugene while watching the movie (you just saw and heard the character he voiced while watching the movie). I have criticized raya and the last dragon for having most of the voice cast be east asian; they weren't terrible at voice acting but their roles could have been given to southeast asian actors and voice actors that really needed those roles.] Jackie chan is already famous (and controversial) in Hong Kong and china, so he doesn't need to rely on voice acting or foreign media to maintain his career. Lauren Tom is known for being in the movie joy luck club and the show andi mack, but she has also done a lot of voice acting and the characters she voiced sound different from each other. Nicki minaj sounded bland, boring, and like a generic celebrity cameo in that one ice age movie she was in, but sounded good and in-character when she voiced one of the gem fusions. The ppg reboot had an asian-american gal voiced bubbles and people automatically blamed her for the reboot destroying bubbles (and "stealing" the role from tara strong and white gals) when she was the voice actor putting the most effort in voicing a ppg character (compared to the white actresses voicing blossom and buttercup in the reboot). Apparently, I learned from youtuber Mr. Nostalgia that Nick Cannon had produced a lot of live-action kid shows and movies and all of the asian stars he recruited ended up doing mostly voice-acting roles; exception is probably H.E.R. who ended up having a music career. Xj9 (jenny) in my life as a teenage robot was voiced by a Japanese-American woman and her only other notable role is ami in hihi puffy amiyumi. Non-asians seem to think that all asian gals have high-pitched squeaky girly voices and use that as an excuse to get white gals to voice female asian characters. James Gie voiced Jackie chan in Jackie chan adventures and Jackie chan's character in the kung fu panda show, so it would have been easier for the upcoming tmnt movie to hire him instead of Jackie chan (whose voice acting in kung fu panda was not great) plus james gie is way less problematic than Jackie chan. Sandra oh and Lucy liu have also voiced other characters as well that aren't celebrity cameos. Ronny Chieng, hasan minaj, and ally wong are comedians, but they have also taken acting roles as well - similar with awkafina. Winx club didn't have poc dubbing musa, flora, and aisha until nickelodeon. I am sure this kind of hustle is something all actors and voice actors of color are very familiar with, though some seem to take it more seriously than others. Will Smith is great at acting but his voice-acting is weak (shark tale). Jada Pinkett is slightly better at voice-acting than will, but her role as Gloria in madagascar wasn't that memorable or strong. Chris Rock had the energy to pull off a comedic character, but all people heard from his role in madagascar was Chris Rock instead of marty. Zendaya is probably good at acting (based in what I heard), but her voice-acting needs work (no effort was put in her voicing Lola bunny). Don't know if Selena gomez counts since we don't know what kind of mexican her dad was, but her acting is better than her music (and her acting and voice-acting isn't that impressive either; her music seems to be more popular than miley and demi only because she's considered more conventionally attractive than demi and not as "wild" as miley even though her singing isn't as strong or great as theirs). Liu yifei (the one who played live-action Disney mulan) can speak english very well and her singing is okay, but she is well-known by chinese audiences for being a bad actress. Jennifer lopez music career is failing, so she has been taking up these acting roles and her acting is .... questionable mixed. Beyonce is a great singer but very bad at acting and voice-acting. Jackie chan is great at acting and stunt work (and he can sing apparently), but his voice-acting needs work. The weekend can sing and write songs, but he can't act, direct, or write shows. Halle bailey is great at singing and while acting isn't her strong suit, she can definitely act. Phil Lamar, lucy liu, sandra oh, james hong, dante basco, the poc voice actors in steven universe, and the guy who played will's fad in fresh prince of bel-air can act and voice-act. Donald glover can sing and act; his views on women suck though. Rachel ziegler can act and sing. Naomi (the one who played live-action Disney jasmine) can act and sing; she was just miscast due to the conflating of swana and south asian cultures and her being a half-white half-indian woman playing a brown swana character. Brenda song's acting career is disappointing since she can only get decent acting roles from Disney but she has voice-acted in TV shows and video games.

It's honestly also an age thing seeing as Gen Xers and Boomers have such little regard for the art of animation only seeing it as something for little kids. This was perpetuated by the shows of the 60s to 80s being glorified toy commercials(He-Man, Transformers, My Little Pony, Sailor Moon) with shows that talked down to kids(Captain Planet) and the lack of adult animation. Heck, the lack of animation that can just be mature or for all ages. In other countries, Gen Xers and Boomers in say Japan or France understand this is a medium. Not just for kids. It also certainly isn't all white men or even all Boomer/Gen Xer white men. Dan Povenmire literally created aroace icon Perry The Platypus.

YES! I LOOOOVE my daily dose of harriyanna!!! It brightens up my workday cuz i enjoy the points u bring up and the funny quips u insert. Its just always a fun time. That being said i really enjoyed this video especially the parts about anime. ive been living in Japan for almost 11 years and im an aspiring manga artist so ive seen the UGLY parts of the industry. it runs deep. both anime and manga is very unforgiving and unrealistic with their expectations. and there a huge what i call "japanese-male-gaze" problem here which is the overusage of unnecessarily big-chested girls, needless pervert jokes, and recycled cookie cut storylines--the ones that we always see in shonen. they say its bc thats what sells so they dont take very many risks on newer ideas and people. this also leads to alot of racism toward aspiring foreigners like myself. as i black man doing shoujo i got hit with alot of prejudice nonsense and excuses. but also for other foreigners many are reduced to just menial tasks or underpaid and overworking animation tasks. its frustrating. so yeah i enjoyed ur video today bc alot resonated with me. thank you for all the work you do!!! no ones worthy of being the first mate but im always happy to swab the deck on this pirate ship :)

4:19 Harriyanna, you have given me a brand new appreciation for FOX's most recent animated sitcoms that were created by women who also act in them: Bless the Harts, Duncanville, The Great North and Housebroken. I do not want to say they are made exclusively for women unless you can name any animated adult cartoons that were mostly made for men to watch like Family Guy or Archer. Actually, Housebroken seems like the most geared towards the female gaze out of all four of these shows. Bless the Harts and Duncanville are cancelled now, but The Great North and Housebroken(?) are thankfully still making new seasons, and I want FOX to hire more female show creators/voice actors like them when they have room for a new animated show on Sunday. I think The Great North has the best chance of reaching the same longevity as King of the Hill and Bob's Burgers because it was made by the same animation studio and created by the Molyneux sisters who used to write and produce for Bob's Burgers. However, it would be a nice surprise if Housebroken's audience stuck around long enough to help that show be renewed beyond three seasons as well. I did not think much of Housebroken before, but now I really want it to pass Duncanville because I really appreciate how Housebroken can do so much with a large ensemble of 10 animals in a small setting if they give them each a turn to carry a storyline for a few episodes every season. I did not count Bubbles, because that goldfish never had any plot lines of her own yet and she never goes anywhere in her fish bowl, but I did count Tchotchke in spite of no voice actor playing him because he has had some stories of his own to interact or travel with other animals. I am not the biggest fan of Housebroken, but for the sake of people who love Gabrielle Allan, Jennifer Crittenden or Clea Duvall (the co-creator who voices Elsa), I really hope it runs new seasons for much longer than I originally expected it to go on. At the time of when I posted this comment, it has not yet been announced if FOX has cancelled Housebroken, or renewed Housebroken for Season 3 because Season 2 is not finished airing yet. Maybe The Great North and Housebroken will not run for a whole decade, but I know that just doing more of that, hiring more women like Emily Spivey, Amy Poehler, Minty Lewis or Clea Duvall, and other women who are women of color of course, to create new flavors of animated FOX comedies that are funny and not unfunny, I think it might be the key to solving animation's white man problem you just mentioned. Get more women to create cartoon comedies for adults that women will like, ones that have the maturity of The Great North and Housebroken and not immature gross-out humor like the dudes who created Brickleberry, Paradise PD and Farzar. I found them amusing in a dumb way, as a guilty pleasure to watch in small doses, but they are just too much for me and most people to stomach.

Please tell me who doesn't like animation. I know people who don't watch it on the regular, but definitely not against it or 'not seeing the value'. I've only known one person who hated anime with a passion, but they've calmed down a lot. Older people will talk about pioneering as an audience, and that's cool, but when they just sit and act better than me it's whatever. I'm genuinely interested if you know people bc I don't, I believe they're out there which is why I'm intrigued.

From reading the comments and clicking around parts of this hour-long video, I know that the white man problem is not the only general problem with animation you discuss throughout this video. That is how this video begins, but it is not the whole video after 6 minutes. But yes, we definitely still need a more diverse assortment of people who make animation and want animation to be treated/taken more seriously, and a bigger variety of animation styles in film before Into the Spider-Verse's style wears out its welcome in a decade, when it was unique and groundbreaking back in 2018.

Thank you for reading my comment in the video. I never truly paid attention to whoever was behind the character. Still don't. Like I said, as long as you get equality of opportunity, that's all you can ask for. I agree somewhat that yes there are alot of white people in entertainment. But there is no way around that unless you flat out say white people can't be in roles. But then that gets into discrimination. We live in a majority white country, just the way the world works. Also, diversity is good. No issues with that. My thing is what is the right amount of representation? Because then you'd have to check boxes and look for people to specifically fit a role, which goes towards why I say best man for the job.
