I just finished the main story on PS4 and hadn't really noticed the frame drops until I watched other people play. You can tell it's unlocked because it tends to look like it speeds up when the framerate spikes but I'm so focused on reading the monster I can't tell when it's below 20 for half a second.

Every game before this had just Monster Hunter language like Sims' language (no actual understandable VA) with subtitles, but now they have regular English/Japanese VA too but it's still synced to if you use the MH fictional language option lol.

I have it on PS4 and have been playing it all week, it's a blast. The frame rate is a bit choppy but it hasn't effected my enjoyment of the game at all. People really need to start pulling their heads out of their asses.

Resolution and framerate are nice numbers that can be variable. People generally goes for what sound prettiest. Anyone that actually cares goes out and buys top end PC hardware and changes the hardware as their performance dips. 60fps is not and has never been a requirement for gaming despite what elitists try to say. The game runs excellently on "underpowered" hardware, as you say.

Things aren't always that simple. Games like this have gone through the source codes of hundreds of developers to come together into a releasable game. Inconsistencies happen and adding certain features may require the reworking of frameworks/API which simply may not be worth the time/money (to just name two of the billions of problems that may involve implementing features). Game developers want nothing more than to bring you a optimized, playable, and fun game but sometimes to make that happen they have to nitpick what implementations are the most important to making this happen and sometimes they have to leave out certain things to make it happen.

I own all the consoles too; The issue here is Capcom doing a bad job optimizing the game. Even if you have a deal with Sony how about you spend time on each console and get the best out of each. There's no reason why the game should run so bad on any of them consoles. They just used the Pro as their bench; did the best they could on that ( wasn't good even on that) and then made bad ports to the rest. Very crappy job from capcom.

Thanks for the Video, Jon. As a first-time, 4k TV user (got a mu6290 40-inch this sunday) I've had a difficult time telling the modes apart, mainly due to the 120hz mode (I'm still trying a find a way to temporarily switch to 60hz for certain things). So this explanation of how each mode works will definitely have me leaning towards the graphics option being that it seems like a nice mix of performance and graphical fidelity, at least for the Xbox one X. But, I have to agree with the other comments here about people just happy of finally getting a console version of MH, myself included. I'm playing with two friends whom I've played MH since the PS2 who just wanted a console port. One of them is running a first gen Xbone while the other is using an "S" model. They've both took a week off work to clock in as many hours as they can and they're still playing.

1800p on Pro but checkerboarded. Am I crazy? In the past, didn’t Digital Foundry reveal the base resolution if a game was checkerboarded? In other words, 1400p checkerboarded up to 1800p? The narrator states he was surprised the Pro performed better in resolution mode than x1x because the resolution is also higher on the pro. By his own words he said that the Pro was not a native 1800p but checkerboarded to get there. Is checkerboarded 1800p the equivalent to native 1800p nowadays? It’s obvious that the devs used two different techniques on the consoles and utilized that technique across all versions of that brand. On Sony’s side they utilized some sort of checkerboarding technique and ran with that across the board. On Microsoft’s side they kept things in native resolution with a scaling LOD system. You would think that it would make sense to utilize the checkerboard technique across all versions if that yields better results.

Mr Smith - I thought Rainbow Six Siege used it first and there are other multi platform titles that use the technique. Anyways, after researching, it seems the simplified answer to checkerboarding is roughly half the pixels on screen are live and half are artifacts from the previous frame. This is oddly similar to the old 1080i (interlaced) screens of the mid 2000’s. 1080i TVs showed half the horizontal pixel stack at a time while 720p screens were full “progressive” pixels. There were huge online wars between which was better; 1080i or 720p. 720p eventually won out but was quickly surpassed by 1080p. Most cable companies still feed us a 720p source which is up scaled as “HD”. Sad.

Played about 15 hours on Pro in resolution mode - there is no visible stutter or 'judder' at all. If you slow it down and analyse it then yeah, you will see it - but when playing it you can't tell due to the motion blur and post effects, it looks and plays smooth

I wonder what the game might have looked like if it was developed with the Switch in mind as well. From my very limited viewpoint, it looks like it may have been possible to reduce things like foliage, draw distance, texture quality, etc and maybe add some degree of loading between areas (though not to the extent of the 3DS games) while running at a lower resolution to get this to work on Switch. I'm sure players used to the 3DS for monster hunter would not have minded a middle ground in terms of image quality between the higher end consoles and the 3DS...

Basically why I'm waiting for the PC version. Been waiting for years for Monster Hunter to come back to the big screen, and if I'm gonna do it I'm gonna do it right! 60fps is my desired framerate for this game and that's only happening with a PC. Also, free to play online on PC (I personally don't like paying for online memberships because I can't guarantee I'd make full use of it, plus it kinda forces you to play online while your membership is still active even if you're not that in the mood to play the game... just because you don't want to waste what you've paid for). Also, I'm shocked at the Xbox One's performance; if the resolution is gonna be that low they might as well have just lowered the resolution of some of the meshes and textures, lowered the LOD and even brought it down to 720p... that way they probably could've had the game run at 60fps near-abouts. Because you honestly can't even make out some of the textures.

I'm a PC gamer. I don't ever get into these discussions of which console is better. Because in my opinion, consoles largely hold back the full potential of all developers visions at the expense of scheming more money out of its consumers. I intend to purchase this game when it releases on PC. All biases aside. I believe this was a great and unbiased analysis by Digital Foundry. They well presented what seems to be a fair comparison for all console platforms. From my understanding of what's showcased. Besides the base console versions, neither mid-gen console version is actually better than the other. They both handle the game differently. Where as PS4 Pro gives you a higher texture resolution, further draw distance, and higher distant detail and more advance HDR. But, at the expense of a bit of a lower frame rate. Which is expected when you crank up the detail, draw distance and rendering in any game on any platform. Where as the XB1X draws back the resolution, detail, draw distance, HDR, etc. just to have a higher frame rate. Which is also expected with said changes. Which results in different performance outcomes for both platforms because they're both running the game with different settings coded. I wouldn't state that either is better at running the game. In my opinion, there seems to be multiple games whereas the XB1X doesn't actually quite run much of anything better than the PS4 Pro. Just as you do on PC. The XB1X seems to just be adjusting the settings of how it runs each game in order to get better frames than the PS4 Pro. Just for the unknowing consumer to draw a conclusion that it's better than the Pro.

It's possible because you didn't listen. The Pro isn't a native 1800p, it's checkerboarded where the X's "lower" resolution is a native 1728p A native resolution will always be better than a checkerboarded one and the 1728 probably still looks better overall and from what John said, that seems to be the case here. You could complain the X doesn't also use checkerboarding to hit 4k, but the Pro is probably only running at around 1440p, maybe even lower.

Once again, mid-gen refresh consoles are a mistake. Developers aren't going to spend a lot of time and resources and optimizing a native 4K patch for these machines when they have to build the games on the base consoles first. That's what holds mid-gen consoles back.

I am using a PS4 pro with SSD, before this, I was using original PS4 with stock HD, it was very slow loading and the frame rate is nothing to write home about. I recommend everyone to upgrade your console if you want to enjoy MHW better. It noticeable, just like when you change your phone 7 to iphone 7s (if you know what I mean)

Mid gen consoles are great compared to waiting 4 more years of base models. The mistake is assuming either console could hit 4k 60 on triple aaa titles often. Don’t feel bad for falling for the cleaver marketing. What would have made things better is if both Sony and Microsoft let you upgrade to the newer systems for a lower price with trade in. Say, 100.00 to 150.00

So it looks like Capcom just used the basic tools of the x1x SDK to "enhance" the game and they did that because Microsoft makes it essentially a button press where on the Pro you actually have to go into the game and do most of the work yourself. It also looks like capcoms MT Framework is better optimized for PS4 and Pro which makes sense since the PS4 is the #1 console and was (along with the PRO) the most powerful. This is highly unfortunate because i had planned on buying this game as soon as i saw what DF had to say. I have the pro and x1x but all i see here is Capcom being lazy. I will wait for the PC version where i know ill be able to run at 4k60 or at least 1800p 60 with no problems...and ill also wait until its on sale because i dont like to reward a company for being lazy. So the pc version was delayed for optimization although we will see if thats really the case soon enough. Such a shame reallly. Step up your game capcom....seriously

In my normal xbox one, for the first few hours, it gave me about 20-25 fps going around astera and ancient forest. It got significantly smoother (34+ fps) in wildspire. After I got my main quests in wildspire the fps stabilized hovering around 30+ for all maps except astera. I'm not sure why it's a lot smoother after the first parts of the storyline. Can anyone explain?

I'm at 178 hours, so I clearly love it! It's not a story-focused game, but for how interesting the lore is the story-line still sucked. But that's ok because I bought this game for the gameplay and it delivered. The gameplay, the maps, and everything else about the game is amazing. It's an extremely addicting game and you should definitely buy it if the trailers/videos interest you. I converted my skeptic friend haha and now he's 90+ hours into the game.

Actually,exept a little bit of Camera-stutter (which you oversee after 30 Minutes) I had no obvious technical issues on XBox One X after 40h. It was not even half as worse as shown in the Video.

Great reporting well worth the wait. So the question is did Capcon do right for Xbox gamers? Not really. Xbox definitely needed a beta. To help Xbox fans get to know the ip & for the dev's to get the performance right. Bit silly of Capcon. For me MHW is a sale title around £20. Atlanta Chrome the game is actually really really good. Yes the developers dropped the ball on Xbox. They have a deal with Sony and they are a Japanese developer; never really had high expectations because of the lack of a beta. If betas are suppose to help iron out possible problems, I don't understand how they could be exclusive to a console. Having an exclusive demo is different from having an exclusive beta. You should always try to get the game running great on all consoles it's going to be on. This exclusivity bs is getting out of hand with multiplats. Still a really good game. I play it on my X everyday.

What bothers the crap out of me is that the font is too small or too hard too see due to the flat colors. Another thing is the markers in the map are not very visable. They are too small and do not pop out even when you toggle what you want to find. This is a serious problem and yes, I am playing on a 46 inch screen while only 15 feet away. My friend has a projector with a 60 inch plus screen with the same problem! Font's and markers need to be better visible!
