Hi Ron, I had a similar problem and solved it another way. My Big Sucker is the version that uses the stock 107 cover. Instead of drilling holes for fittings I decided to replace the Arlen Ness head bolts with the OEM head bolts that pass the gasses straight through. No need to plug the ports in the back plate as nothing is routed through them to the intake anymore. They are sealed off from the system by O rings installed on the OEM breather bolts. I drilled two holes in the back plate and routed hoses from each head bolt through the back plate hole (after installing a rubber grommet to avoid failure from vibration). On the back (outside) the air cleaner I installed a T fitting and routed the single line to a filter like you did. Several thousand miles on the bike now (2019 Road King) and it runs like a dream. No more oil splattering on the side of my bike or dripping from the air cleaner. The filter still looks pristine too.

I just installed a Feuling vented dipstick. I have an Arlen Ness Inverted Air Cleaner. I did not wanted to do the venting thru that way. I have not been able to test it since I just installed it yesterday. Will let you know how it worked. I did had oil on the air cleaner plate which straight out scare me. I have a 114 with just a Stage 1 kit. No cams or other engine mods. Video was very detailed and very informative. Keep up the good work.

I now have to do the same with my new 2021 Ultra Limited which will be easier this time around. No drilling or tapping. I liked how detailed your videos are, nicely done.

I'm running the Harley Davidson heavy breather, similar to what your running I also drilled and taped a 1/8 npt but I just ran the line under the throttle body and put the filter there.

I run my head breather bolt tubes up toward the triple tree in front of my gas tank. Everything above the head breather bolt. That way everything drains back into the head and I don't use any oil in blowby. Where the tubes end up by the upper triple tree I just have a piece of cloth. for some reason I don't have oil coming out of those tubes. However, I do use 60w oil. that sh_t don't atomize. Thanks for the vid. It's always interesting to see other peoples set up. Sweet sounding V-Twin too.

Great way to over come the blowby. I did the same thing using the Transformer from DK. My way cost a bit more but I didn't have the foresight you did. However, if I ever have to get a smog check, heaven forbid the government doesn't slap any more restrictions on us, the Transformer can be set to route the blowby back to the original Harley setup. I do have a Catch Can attached to the Transformer.

Great. Now not only do I have to drill into my box new $350 intake I'm going to have to make it look nice. Mine is all chrome and I keep looking at my -4 AN lines I have laying around. I could use all nickel plated fittings and stainless line. Have black braided now for my car. This video gave me several ideas.

I just opened the air cleaner on my 2020 street bob today. I put an aftermarket filter on about 1000 miles ago and there was very little oil residue 🙅 Also, from what I understand, the carbon buildup is a non-issue. It looks bad but doesn't hurt the engine.

To blacken brass get you a little bottle of "Brass Black" By Birchwood Casey at your local sporting good store/Gun store. Might have a scotch bright the brass a little but works great.

Hey Ron I love it Good job . came out very neat, no all I did was ,on my twin cam 2005 Fatboy , I use the rubber grommets (stock ones,) attached a 3/8 windshield wiper / fuel hose, to both grommets with small 3/8 hose clamps,then routed both of those into a T, and the single one out the back. Well I meant to ask you after we do all this to our bikes do we have to tune them again?????

Everything makes sense but the part I kinda don't understand is how did you make sure the spot where you drilled and put the fitting (to vent it out) lined up with the vent hole thats drilled into the oem bolts (where the pressure vents into)

That was definitely a bit tricky - and I got it wrong on the first try! I measured from the front and back of the mounting boss and measured the bolts as well, and then tried to place the holes based on all of that. There is a section of the bolt between two shoulders and that’s where the inlet hole is. I wanted my fitting to be between those two shoulders.

Thank you for the kind words! You know, I’m not certain…but I believe it all boils down to how much filter area is exposed. If I recall correctly, the 90° bend into the throttle body can actually help smooth out the airflow. I’m not an expert in this regard, but I seem to recall those points from years past. And of course it depends on the specifics of the air cleaner itself.

Hey Korie - yes it would work it’s way down to the filter. I didn’t noticed oil in the pod filter, but not long after doing the mod I switched to a catch can. That was also after adding a crankcase vent. The mod also allows that moisture to escape to cut down on the milky gunk. So I followed your instructions and ran the lines the same as you and I'm being told that because I (and you) Ran the lines up vertically That the oil, residue etc. Won't be able to get over the vertically ran hoses because it has no pressure and it will just clog and damage the motor..

Hey DelilahZx10 R - you can definitely rout the lines differently, and keep them lower if you prefer. I didn’t have any problems but you raise a good point and it’s worth making that change.

I seen a video where an HD Master Mech does this mod and then connects it to the tranny cover (crank side) which is vented. Is there an issue with dropping the lines dirct from the monster sucker to the tranny cover (crank side)? Im running a 2022 Street Glide ST.

Hey John - that’s a good question. My guess is there’s probably no issue with that. There’s a chance there could be some condensation / milky gunk that goes through those lines so that’s the only potential issue that comes to mind. Let me know what you decide to do!

The threads for the fittings I used are 1/8” NPT. I think I got a tap & drill set that came with the right drill bit, but the tap should also have the drill size listed.

Hey Ron, new viewer here. Just picked up a 21 RG 107 in Oct. Heard about the blow by issues right around the 1k service. Told the dealer (2 different dealers now) about my excess oil blow by and they say it's normal. My bike has roughly 2k miles on it now and my filter is 100% soaked in oil. I have to clean it & the throttle body out after every ride, while dealer refused to replace the filter on the 1k service. Actually told my to wash it with soap and water?!! Question... the hoses and fittings you mention in your video, are those Arlen Ness specific or will they also work with factory bolt/hoses? Awesome content, well thought out, love your channel. Hey Jon - not dumb at all! The Arlen Ness bolts don’t have nipples on them. One option could be swapping out the bolts and then routing the lines from those new ones - and still blocking off the ports in the throttle body. I’m not sure if they’re standard bolts or not but that should be easy enough to determine and overcome.

Has anyone moded their intake to route the blow by hose into the transmission cover? I have heard of people drill/tapping a fitting into the top of the tranny case in order to vent the oil back to the tranny instead of using a small filter/can. Any info if this is a good idea/bad idea etc. would be GREAT!

I wouldn’t want the blow-by contaminating the crankcase - but I think that’s how the 2024 bikes are set up from the factory.

Hey Ron, bought the air cleaner and am going to do this mod. Just had a few concerns about the internal holes.. have you found a better solution than tapping them? Worried about over time the screws breaking down and honestly the overall tapping them out. Any info would be much appreciated!

Hey Jon - No I haven't come up with anything else. They do go all the way through the intake and end up at the mounting bosses where the breather bolts go. Maybe there's a way to plug them at that end, but you'd be dealing with a small 1/2" orifice. I thought about JB Weld to fill the holes, but I'd be nervous that it would get sucked out at some point down the line. I'll let you know if I think of anything else...and please let me know what you end up with.

I was looking at my AN filter tonight figuring out how I am going to do this, and I have a game plan. I wanted to ask you, does it matter where the hole on the breather bolt that goes into the head lines up? I marked where the hole is and on one side it lines up with the port to the intake, on the other side it does not. Does that matter or will the air/oil mixture make it's way out of the breather either way? Does that make sense?

Hey Seth - take a look at the bolts and the holes they sit in on the intake, and the cross-drilled holes on the bolts (if present) - as long as there are no shoulders or seals that may affect how the gasses flow, you should be ok. If there's a shoulder or seal and you drill on the wrong side of it, the gasses may not get out. There should be some sort of channel around the bolt at some point, and that should be the optimal place to target (as long as there are no complications with the intake at that point). Does that help at all?

I was told that if I'm running with only a stage one on my M8, I don't need to do any of the mods for high pressure in the crankcase, is this true?

Hey Jeff - everything I’ve seen says that blow-by is a noteworthy issue on the Milwaukee Eight in general. So venting the crankcase will reduce that pressure that causes the blow-by. It’s probably up for debate, but to me, allowing the engine to breath easier makes sense. I’ve just finished venting the crank case using the transmission too cover, in addition to the external breather mod on the intake. Bike is running great. I want to use the 3/16 fuel hose as you did and route it in the most discreet way possible. This brings me to my question. Do you experience any oil flow problems due to the fact the oil has to travel upwards before it reaches your can? My understanding of good oil flow is to allow it for a path of least restriction. I welcome your sage insights.

Hey Fred - I haven’t had any issues with hose routing. I’ve also changed things around a good bit, trying different solutions. As a result I haven’t had an extended time with any one configuration.

Hey Ken - the filter itself is water resistant so it’s fine in light rain. They have a rain sock as well, which would be good for riding in heavy or prolonged rain.

Hey Joe - I think you’re right. That’s cheap insurance and you just never know when you’ll get caught out in it. I plan to add a sock to the swing arm bag.

@@RonsWorkshop Totally forgot you mentioned that in the beginning of the video. I ended up using the 1/4 fuel hose to a 3/8. I mounted the catch can to one of the bolts on the timing cover. Then ran the hose under the side side cover then over to the can. I did want to ask if you have had any issues with the hose having to go up first to the Y then down to the hot to the filter? Just wondering if the pressure is enough to push the oily gases all the way down to my catch can.

Brian I checked the external breather hoses this morning and they are still flowing freely, so in my case it does not look like the vent hose angle is having any negative effect.

Great video!! Did you have any oil “blow by” coming out the side of the intake? I have the Arlen Ness big sucker velocity 65 degree on a Street glide special and it comes out the side and blows onto my saddle bags.

Hey Billy - as a matter of fact I just checked them last week and they were super clean. Keep in mind that I also implemented a crankcase vent a few weeks after adding the external breather mod, which should greatly reduce / minimize the blow-by. @@RonsWorkshop Hey Ron.I did trans venting, and so far it's working well. I will add the breather mod to the Big Sucker. There was a "little" oil at injection site before I did the trans cover. I'll put aboit 200 miles on and check. If very little oil, I'll leave alone. If there is a noticable amount, I'll change. Thx for these videos. It has helped immensely

Hey William - glad the stickers arrived! Your question is very subjective and not necessarily easy to answer. Stage I wouold probably give you 10-15% more power, but it really boils down to budget. Realistically I'd say even just going to a high-flow air cleaner or more open slip-ons would need a new fuel map. Yes, you could skip that, BUT you just don't know what the long term effects could be if it ends up running lean or rich. Not sure that will help you, but it's just some input to think about.

I’m curious if the external breather is needed after venting the crankcase? I installed the Trask cover on my transmission and was just about to put a external kit on the breather for my 107 m8’ when I saw a video by Kevin Baxter on the subject and he recommended venting the crankcase or the breather but not both. Do you have any thoughts on the subject since it appears you’ve done both?

Hey Todd - I suspect the crankcase vent by itself will really make a big difference. But I still like the idea of doing both - just as extra insurance. Even if there’s still a little blow-by I don’t want it pushing hot air and oil mist into my intake. To me, more venting is better, but that’s just my opinion and the route I took.

Hey bigteddybear012001 - it’s my understanding that all of the Milwaukee Eight motors have this blow-by situation. I haven’t heard anything different about the 2021 models. You could also consider crankcase venting, but maybe not both. I’m about to do a follow up video where I check for vacuum on my motor after having done both ventilation mods. Hey William - that’s definitely possible. A catch can would alleviate that. I’d rather deal with that than have oil in the intake and the tops of the pistons coated with baked-on oil.

I had this same issue with the arlen ness big sucker. No one made a banjo bolt long enough. So all i did was remove those arlen ness banjo bolts that get gummed up and replaced them with a drilled out hollow piece of stainless steel all thread and a flange nut. Stuck the hose on the end of that all thread and was done. I made a video if anyones interested.
