I actually just completed the same mod on my 2014 110" Slim. I ordered the same aluminum brake reservoir (in Black) with the bracket. I drilled several small vent holes on the top and used it as the catch can. I mounted it using one of the cam cover bolts. Looks and works great! Thanks for posting the great video! I can absolutely confirm that the carbon build up is happening. I went to a stage three and the carbon build up on the pistons was terrible. I also got the new metal throttle manifold and I inspected the old black plastic throttle manifold and it had a thick grime coating of oil. So this mod is a must along with ensuring you don’t over fill your oil (two dots below full). Thanks for this video!

@Evirthewarrior3 жыл бұрын
@@jstockwell73 It is, people are making a big deal out of nothing, the oil "issue" is not an issue at all, there are M8s with 30k miles on them, they run fine, just use some engine cleaner, save yourself some money and don't make your motorcycle look like you built it yourself in your garage by having tubes hang off it like a Kawasaki. If it was as big of an issue as these people are making it out to be, you would have to dump a quart of oil in it between oil changes, the fact is, the oil doesn't get low between oil changes, they are emptying that tiny can out every few thousand miles and probably do not need to for 10000 miles. That amount of oil being burned at that slow of a pace is nothing.

Guys, this is a great idea. But keep in mind that the original problem was oil sumping. So the ability for this line to breathe is important. The catch can should have a line for fluid and a pod filter to vent gasses out at the top. If you connect the hose to a closed catch can the pressure has nowhere to go, so the pressure from gases will not move, bringing the engine back its original problem to begin with. External breather kits like the one sold by horsepower ink flows to atmosphere. It is more like a hydraulic remedy. Of course, without a breather cap hydraulic pressure cannot move. Just something to keep in mind. ✌
@TheGingybeardMan2 жыл бұрын
After using a catch can for only 1500 kms I certainly would not recommend one. As you said it can pressurise. I'd definitely recommend a pod filter over a catch can. The catch can also began to rust significantly on the inside after only 1500 kms

I don't know about your bike but I noticed the difference in performance as soon as I put my external breather on..mostly because the air fuel mixture wasn't hot anymore..Also if you keep your oil level around half way on the dipstick (when hot of course) you really won't get much oil in that catch can..I just kept a pod filter on mine mostly just to let the hot air out.. Mines a twin Cam though, but still shouldn't be too much different than the m8 with the amount you'll find in that filter..My set up cost around $15 using 10mm fuel line, a couple of connectors and a $4 eBay filter.. What you failed to mention is to use that filter oil as sparingly as possible 😆 I used the stuff on a heavy breather just like you did and the amount of excess oil after significantly blotting it for ages was still significant enough to drip on the cases. With the K&N filter for the ventilator all I did was run one ring all the way around the filter and leave it for 24 hours. it still required several days of blotting with paper towels. Can imagine your clean up was well excessive 😂

I did some research on this after watching this video and this is what I learned, since there are tons of videos about this, just dealing with cars and none of the Motorcycle ones get all the information correct, they are half right or trying to sell a product. This is the same issues cars have, currently the solutions are; use synthetic oils, Valvoline seems to be the best because it evaporates the least, use a quality gas that has additives in it Shell seems to sell the best, since it has the most cleaners. Oil catch cans can be beneficial, but they cause their own problems with vacuum (oil breaks down most of the tubing people are using) it causes performance losses and if you do not empty it, it makes the problem WAY worse. Oil catch cans, do not solve the problem completely, and carbon will continue to build up. The final solution is to take the engine apart and use a walnut blaster and clean the carbon off directly. Almost all motor vehicles are moving towards direct injection, there are a few manufacturers that have solutions, like Toyota, but none of them would apply to Harleys without radical redesigns of the engine.
@TheGingybeardMan3 жыл бұрын
I do understand this mod does not completely rid the engine of all carbon build up. That said this mod diverts oil from the heads away from the intake. Do you believe that venting oily mist from the heads into your intake will have no effect on any carbon build up?

@@TheGingybeardMan It is a minor issue, it is not as big of an issue as people are making it out to be, I already had seen the video you linked. Cars have been dealing with this for over a decade now, there are ways to deal with it, and most cars get along fine without any modification, even in to the 100k-200k range. Motorcycles, rarely see that, most people with 20-30k miles will never have an issue. Especially if it is highway miles and you are not working the engine that hard.

You don't need a catch can which needs regular emptying. Just run a tube down through the swing arm to the ground. If you park your bike in the garage like I do, place a folded paper towel underneath it to catch the one or two drops that fall for the first few hours after a ride. Then throw the paper towel away. The black rubber tube on my Sportster is not noticeable unless I point it out to someone.

The problem I had after doing this was oil coming out every where it seemed. Put the vented dipstick back in this weekend see if that helps
@TheGingybeardMan3 жыл бұрын
When you say oil coming out everywhere, where was it coming from? This mod does not perform the same roll as the vented dipstick. The vented dipstick relieves crank case pressure while this mod onky diverts lil pressure away from the intake. This mod does not relieve crank case pressure. Oil coming out of your intake is usually a symptom that your oil level is too high. I assume you didn't notice this whilst having the vented dipstick in place as it relieves crank case pressure as stated

You could certainly could vent the blow by back into the oil pan however if you were to connect a t-fitting to the casing that would require drilling and tapping the casing which im personally not prepared to do. I believe I used a grommet with a 3/8 inner diameter which makes a tight seal for the hose running through it so no dust can get past it.

Spray bottle at the dollar store or Walmart. In the US the oil is Red. Make sure you allow the excess to drip dry.
@TheGingybeardMan3 жыл бұрын
The oil consistency is far too thick to be able to work in a spray bottle. The red filter oil which comes in a can is pressurised however the black filter oil is not available in a pressurised can. The oil was drip dry before reapplied on the bike.

@@TheGingybeardMan I don't know what they are using for oil there. But the K&N oil in red comes in a hair spray bottle pump spray bottle here. I would check Amazon or car parts store

Love the video, very informative! I'm going to do the exact thing to my 2018 SGS. Question for ya - where did you get that tee? I've looked on Amazon and eBay with no success.

Hey man ! Nice vid and very informational ! I am thinking of doing something similar and was wondering if you could list everything you bought to perform the external breather mod, please and thank you !
@TheGingybeardMan4 жыл бұрын
I used the following: - Mackay emissions control vacuum hose - 6mm (1/4 inch) inner diameter, this is the hose which goes onto the breather bolts. - 3/8 inner diameter rubber grommets ×2 These were used when i drilled holes in the air cleaner backing plate. - 1/4 X 3/8 X 1/4 Tee 3-Way Hose Barb Brass Fitting Fuel Connector, this is the fitting where the 2 hoses join into one. - 3/8 inner diameter fuel hose approx 1 meter in length cut to size, this is the hose which runs between the t connecter and pod filter. - 1x DK customs catch can. - 1x CNC Rear Brake Fluid Tank Reservoir. I purchased this to use the bracket it comes with to hold the catch can. Still waiting on it in the mail here's a link www.ebay.com.au/itm/264546953994 - I also used two hose clamps which span from 6mm to 16mm and about 6 zipties.

Great Video Gingy! You are skilled at doing these videos. Do you know if this eliminates the need for a vented dipstick? I've had a couple people tell me to vent the crankcase through the dipstick. I have a 2018 Heritage with 114.
@TheGingybeardMan3 жыл бұрын
Thanks mate. This mod does not relieve the crank case pressure like the vented dip stick does. This mod only diverts the oil which spews out of the heads away from the intake 👍
