As a suggestion, I really like the "'bike flavour wheel", but you should definitely highlight the subject you are talking about when you bring it up. It's hard to find ourselves in the amount of information that you are presenting. Essentially, I suggest highlighting the subject (the quadrant?) by toning down the rest of the wheel, then pinpoint where the bike you review is exactly, with some sort of arrow or pointer. Nonetheless, amazing videos, keep it up!

For anyone wondering, Soma's Double Cross is also a remarkably similar ride, but with simplified rear dropouts, if you don't want to bother with the sliding drops of the Wolverine. A great all-rounder, just like the Wolverine!

TOTALLY agree on 105 groupset. The cost to shave a few more grams by going with Ultegra or Dura Ace is way too much for me. I'm just hoping there's some trickle..um..up?..sideways?..from the GRX sub compact crankset to 105 in the future. With regard to the moving outboard of crank and front derailleur, I wonder if the industry is trying to move everything outboard in preparation of 12 or 13 speed? Will we see the need to go to boost spacing (148 vs 142 thru axle) or greater on adventure bikes to accommodate wider cassettes in the next 5 years? It would make sense that the entire drive train would eventually have to go wider for more cogs on the cassette instead of keeping the same standards back when 8 cogs was all that was needed. The further blending of road and mtb in inevitable. And I'm all for it. But I may keep a retrogrouch triple crank, 8 speed bike in the stable just for grins. Great vid as always.

LOVE the channel! I've been saving up for a new bike since my previous one was stolen a couple months ago. I've built up a beater bike off of Craigslist to ride in the meantime -- a late 80's Specialized Rock Hopper that I've set up semi-supple. I was really looking forward to this review because the Wolverine Type B is one of the replacement frames I've been considering. Also in the running is the Surly Midnight Special (especially now that there are more color options). Your reviews are SUPER informative and helpful. Anyway, I'd love to see a review of the new All City Zig Zag but with big 650b tires. I emailed them to ask about 650b tire clearance but they replied that they don't recommend 650b on the Zig Zag, which I don't entirely understand. Note: one common feature of all the frames I'm considering is the ability to mount downtube shifters. I know they're archaic but I love them and want to keep riding them as long as possible. Thanks again for all y'all do!

Nice Review, as always. I have the Wolverine and it's my favorite bike ever. I also have the Cross Check, and IMO, the Wolverine is a way more stable ride. The back end of the Cross Check is way more twichy. I'll probably plug in the ride wheel and compare them eventually. The Wolverine feels closer to a "road bike" than most cyclocross bikes I've ridden, but I haven't been on many of the modern gravel bikes. I definitely agree on your review of the climbing; it climbs reasonably well for being so heavy (compared to roadies). This was kind of at the forefront of gravel bikes and a lot have caught up and passed it, but it's still a great bike.
@boombangbeep
@boombangbeep 5 жыл бұрын
Until this version, V4. The Wolverine has had identical geometry to the Cross-Check. Because the designer openly stated he specifically copied the Cross-Check. they even have the same tire clearances. He did this because the Straggler was designed longer and lower than the Cross-Check, and he didn't get why Surly did that. He felt the Cross-Check was great, It just needed discs. What's interesting is the Cross-Check has much more forgiving tubes, because it doesn't have to be stiffened for Disc Brakes like the Wolverine and Straggler did. I do wonder if the flex the cross check possesses from those lighter tubes is what you are feeling. I have both the Wolverine and the Straggler, I still want a cross check for goofing around. I dream of Crust!

@@boombangbeep Not identical, but close. Wolverine has a taller headtube, longer wheelbase and taller bottom bracket drop. Stack and reach are more for the Wolverine (Looking at 58 cm for each). They are pretty close, but IMO, it's surprising how much more relaxed the Wolverine feels. I'm guessing it's the stack and wheelbase. I picked my Surly because I looked at the geometry and saw it was very close to my Wolverine so I was pretty sure it would fit haha.
@boombangbeep
@boombangbeep 5 жыл бұрын
@@rangers1919 until this generation they were exactly identical in every single way other than seat tube length. As Surly measures seat tube to the intersection, And Soma measures to the end of the tube. The Paperwork may not look like a match. But Evan, who has commented in these comments. Is one of the designers along with Stan Pun. And both of them have made statements that the Wolverine literally has the same Geo as a Cross Check. On top of that. I've run fit numbers on my 54 cm Wolverine, my 54cm Straggler, and a customers 54 cm Cross check. The Wolverine has identical Geo for V1-V3. But the Straggler does not match either, though that is to be expected. The perk of the Wolverine is that it's seat tube is a real 54cm versus the Cross Checks 57cm, and It has like 13mm more head tube. But ETT, Stack and Reach, as well as HTA, STA and even BB drop are matches. But measured in two different schools of thought by different standards.

@@James-he2vg They actually dont have the lugged steel fork for the Type A (the headtube would eat it whole). it only has the unicrown tapered thru axle fork which IMO looks bad and the bike would have been 28lbs. I love my V3 Wolverine with the lugged fork. it looks classy but is capable of singletrack and rough touring (it is heavy compared to similar bikes). I bought it on sale after the V4 came out bc green of the Type B looked so bad.... I wish they went with a pale green or even a pink like the Crust. But nothing can beat that orange of the V1 and V2.

@@PathLessPedaledTV I can understand lack of time, and I respect all the work that goes into making these reviews. Anyway, at least for me, in thinking about purchasing a (V3) Wolverine frame, the dropouts are one of the major things that distinguish the bike from its competitors. (Though I gather the V4 Type-A you had is no longer belt-drive compatible, but it should still be easy to convert to single speed...?) Whether these adjustable dropouts are a bug or feature (for me) is something I'm not quite sure about, so I'd have loved to hear your thoughts on their utility and implementation. Ah well, I guess the bike's already gone by now, so opportunity missed (for me)...

The steel fork on mine (v 2.0) is sometimes too flexy. Hard breaking can feel dicey especially with a load, and if I just slam on the brakes I get fork shudder. Russ, thankyou for the review! I think I already interpreted the answer from your reviews, but more confirmation would be great, sometimes I get lost in the details! While comparing two bikes (as built in your reviews), if rougher roads, rougher terrain, and some mostly smooth but twisty single track were a most of the mix, and less smooth pavement, would you personally choose the bombora over the wolverine? What are your thoughts between those two in terms of climbing in rough terrain (for the genre ), does the Wolverine take more input? I do not have much flatland local too me, lots of steep climbs and decents. It also looks like the wolverine has around 11mm or less trail with the steel fork than the carbon, is that about right? My guess looking at reviews and geo is the bombora would be a better choice for rougher oriented terrain, non paved steep climbs and decents, in terms of geo. I require a narrow Q, which limits my choices for bikes intended for rougher conditions (for clarification: ruts, rocks, bumps, not hucks, drops and jumps). Unfortunately, it limits my tire size too, or i would be looking closer to 3 inches. Thanks! And thanks again for the reviews Russ.

Hi guys, thanks for the review. Question for you: I just ordered a set of Yokozuna Motoko brakes and I'm building up a Wolverine Type "A" frameset to put them on (waiting for the brakes to arrive). This will be built up as a single-speed. I bought SRAM S500 brake levers to go with the brakes. But when the brake levers arrived, I see they do not have lever return springs. So there is nothing to make the levers return to the non-braking position when released. I'm wondering if this would work with the Motoko brakes, or do I need to buy different levers with return springs? Thanks!

I think the brake calipers should snap the levers back into place.

How much of a weight difference between that carbon fork and the regular steel fork? Is standard the QR or through axle fork? Any reason they didn't give you a build with their own carbon fork?

I still don't get how the cable/hydraulic brake would feel so much better. I have trouble seeing how the pivot in a cable-actuated brake could cause more than trivial amounts of friction/stiction.

I suppose but people have been running 46-30s with with pretty wide tires without issues? The cynic in me thinks its just a ploy to sell front DRs. Laura's Breadwinner has 46-30 cranks and pretty big 2.1 G-Ones on them.
@Clydesdalecycle
@Clydesdalecycle 5 жыл бұрын
I'm currently having my own custom built and I brought up the idea of being able to run 50mm tires. Hopefully I capture what he told me correctly. Getting clearance for that changes the design of the chain stays. We could still use a "regular" front mech to his knowledge, but a dimple would be required in the chainstays for the cranks to have clearance to turn with flex. If they move the cranks out slightly it negates this. But i could have completely misunderstood him. I'm sure the internet will let me know

@@PathLessPedaledTV The Dropouts weren't slammed, so the CS length on the Wolverine is longer than stated in the spec. The Fyxation fork also has a smaller offset than what the Wolverine is designed for, which would increase the trail.
