I'm glad I came across your channel. I am out of grit and the rock club I belonged to disbanded years ago thats where I bought my grit. Can I ask where you buy your grit from? I have a lot of petrified I would like to tumble. Also what type of saw is the big saw you use?

I use an 18 inch Covington slab saw. I buy my grit from Amazon mostly...either The Fundamental Rockhound or MJR Tumbler brands. I use a Lortone tumbler.

I am new to tumbling and I would say you are right on. I have found also that the residual grit that you can't see is the problem. You have to clean the barrels, rocks, pans, strainers and whatever else the grit touches because it sticks to everything and will keep rocks from shining. You need to run the rocks in a bath for a few hours to clean them, then start the next grit step. Thank you for sharing!

Looks like artistically done with your excellent artist eye stone selections. I still want to see those walnut sized multi colored Jasper pieces I've seen you put in the you said, tumble bucket. All those vivid reds and mustard yellows. Those would be epic pieces to show off. 😁

I envy you so much to live in an area where you can find precious stones. I live in The Netherlands and we have ‘none’. I just buy the tumbled stones every once in a while but it must be so gratifying to find, cut and tmble them yourself. I have seen several of your vids and really enjoy them, both educational as well for eye candy. You must have a museum full of gems to share with people. Do you have some sort of display or other set up ? Thanks for sharing all the good stuff MRM. I’ll keep on following you.

Borax Soap? Does it work well? Do you use it a certain way?
@robertmandigo79424 жыл бұрын
@@MontanaRockMom Yes it works. The KZbinr Michigan Rocks has several videos on tumbling both rotary tumblers and vibratory tumblers and when to use Borax (twenty mule team)can be found in the dry laundry soaps in most grocery stores. He often uses it after the polishing step to clean the rocks so you don't get the white residue in cracks and on the whole rock. He has won at least one polishing contest.

If you pre cut some of the agate into an oval shape before tumbling, do you think it would come out looking like a cabochon, or do the stones not hold their general shape through the process?

Yes, I think many would make great cabs that way.

Great finds. I love tumbling stuff too I have a big Tumblr like yours it works really good if you try and fill it at least 3/4 of the way full so that the rocks don’t get broken and also change your plastic pallets out and mark them for each cycle of tumble the grid sticks to the pellets and can damage your rocks as well. Great tip on rinsing your rocks I’m gonna start doing that too looks great and I just use bar soap ivy bar soap works really good to clean up your rocks. Great video
@MontanaRockMom3 жыл бұрын
Thanks Douglas. I used to brush every single rock by hand, however, I have found that tumbling them in the water for a few hours/day can shake free grit that you just can't get to. I am always amazed at the color of the water after. I will tumble them in water until the water is clean.
