A intermediate line is the most versatile line, but someone else commented, fly line is determined by water depth and current. Most saltwater fly fishermen have multiple spools with different weighted sinking lines, or they keep different attachable sink tips they put on the floating line. They cast horrible compared to dedicated sinking lines. For the shallow water you are fishing, you made a good choice. I think you know to catch that bigger fish you will have to go after dark, or get a good overcast day. The fly selection for big fish is also different, fishing at night for cows, I would go with a big fly, half and half, deciever, or a ep baitfish. I love the ep baitfish cause they have a big eye, something a big fish would key in on in low light. And a lot of same tactics apply, retrieve is slow. Let the intermediate line sink, you want a floating fly with a short leader, letting the line get down but the fly will stay up off the bottom. shorter the leader, the closer the fly will be to the bottom. Another important technique is the 2 handed strip, haven't seen you do it in your videos yet. Putting the rod under your armpit, allowing you to keep the fly moving continuously, and achieve fast retrieves for blues. The hook set is also done with the strip, not the rod, fly rods absorb most of the energy, especially with thicker hooks and bigger flies. Instead of going on and on , the best advice I could give you is to read Stripers On The Fly. by Lou Tabory. He is from CT. The book is priceless, and is worth every minute spent reading it. Fly fishing since I was ten years old, and I still go back to my fly fishing books to refresh my skills. I love watching your videos, taught me a lot about kayaking, can't wait till you get that cow on the fly rod. good luck.

No need to doink this guy br - his advice is solid and your man asked for advice in his vid, not just what our thoughts are. Been fishing 55 years now, still trying to pick things up and learn - I can catch fish no problem, but the point is trying new things keeps it interesting. Thanks Bach, will have to check out Tabory’s book.

Fly line all depends on where you're fishing! I use an intermediate fly line made by airflo on my 8 wt switch. And it sinks 2" per sec and it's great for everything!

I love the Titan sonar clear tip intermediate, great for saltwater and freshwater with BIG flies 1/0 - 8/0, but for flats, a floating line is a good idea. Try bigger flies, they get bigger fish. At night use black/blue pattern and get it down deeper. Big striper conserve their energy and can't beat the schoolies to the food usually so you need to just throw something too big and too deep for the fish you don't want to catch.

Nice video, Rich! The conditions was so good that I really thought that was going to be the night you get that elusive 18-20 pounder. Well, at least you did not get skunked. Don't forget your bug spray next time...those bugs can be really nasty as you know.

You made a good choice I'm a guide here on Cape Cod. Intermediate lines are what we use. You need them to get below the surface. One suggestion, get a set of 5' poly leaders. From there you just tip it with a few feet of 20lb. We have the clear intermediate poly leaders on the intermediate line 90% of the time. If the water is fast or really deep we will use a fast sink poly leader in that same intermediate line. People are also right on the money suggesting clousers. A chartreuse and white catch over 75% of our fish.

Thanks man for the tips! I like the line but just think it can be heavy at times to get up but maybe its more fatigue after casting for awhile and fishing all day haha. I was thinking of getting a floating so I could fish a Crease an heard it would be lighter to cast.

FishAholic Fishing message me in Facebook if you want. If your ever in the cape I'll meet up with you, I always have 5 or 6 reels spooled up. If it was feeling fatiguing I'm guessing the head was longer than your used too. What I settled on for my personal setup is the Rio outbound short series. The heads are rockets and cast very easily. They also make the outbound short as a just a head to attach to running line. That's what I have settled on. One really nice reel with my favorite running line and the outbound short heads in float, intermediate and fast sink. I just loop on whatever is the best one for the day. This system is also nice as the heads are only around $40. I usually just carry the other 2 heads in my pack and switching out the head takes 1 minute versus a while to change out an entire line. Look into it. If you don't want the loop to loops then I suggest you at least give the outbound short intermediate a try the line is a rocket and they make it for stripers.

Dnt know if this helps but I fish the UK for European sea bass, best results come at night with bigger fish, they also come into much shallower water after dark and as such easier to target with a floating line, there's no need to pull so hard either, slow 6" pulls work well and the bass hammer the flies on the drop, the floating line helps aid this, I look for areas like small estuaries, lagoons, generally water between 2ft and 6ft deep. I fish a team of two flies between 4" and 8" in length, also going one line size heavier may help you load the line quicker for easier casting.

I generally use an intermediate fly line. if I'm in deeper water I'll add 15' of sinking line then the tippet clousers and saneels are my favorite. Hey you done good at least you got into fish ok your first goal is to get your 20lb striper your second goal is to fly swat for Albies good luck. Nice vid

Whenever I get new fly line I always go on a football field and cast for a half hour to stretch and break in the line, might help you get more distance out of your cast
@FishAholicTV7 жыл бұрын
thanks for the help. I should do that. Thanks Steven!
@greatnesswithin5607 жыл бұрын
In my opinion, you generally should use a sink tip line for unweighted fly that you want to get down in the water column or when fishing deeper water. You should've went with a floating line and attached a polyleader. That way you would've still had a floating line to fish top water flies if you wanted.

Keep it simple, your catching fish. Great. We make our own shooting head lines, 15ft of T11 on a 100ft level shooting line. Get 90' casts. It strips in along the bottom, that's what you want anyway. Great video.

Knot on a 3ft piece of lead core to the fly line,4ft leader and a bare hook with a sliver of pork rind as long as you can comfortably cast.Cut back leader until you're in the zone,so to speak.Pork rind should be black, leader just a hunk of 20 lb straight mono.Look for moving water. Hope this helps,works great at the Cape Cod Canal when plugs and tins fail.

Question, do you know any good boats that leave from the island that are not overly priced and go for larger strippers or medium sized sharks? I live in VA but love to fish and have a lot of family up there that like to go out every summer. Thanks.
