Thanks for sharing the fond memories guys. My late Dad taught me to drive in his 1986 Montego 1.6L (C553ETH) and when I passed my test in March 1989 he was good enough to lend it to me every now and then to drive to school and back! I was only 17 so he must have really trusted me. And in winter, with him behind the wheel, it was unstoppable in the snow. It wasn’t unusual for our Montego to be the only car parked in the street with all the neighbours cars abandoned in the snowdrifts at the bottom of the hill lol. Good times 😀

Lovely memories guys, & it triggered a family holiday memory of mine. We were in south east France in 1984 when our beige Ford Sierra 1.6L ground to a halt. Cam belt failure, which very luckily didn’t destroy the engine. The local garage in the village of Vance fixed our car in 48 hours & didn’t charge a fortune, but the hire car they gave us was a battered old Renault 4 that was truly terrifying to drive! The funny thing is, my father was an engineer at Rolls Royce, Crewe. A man of few words as well, he only admitted on our return home that “I was going to change that belt but it still should have lasted bloody ages”.

In the 70s My father had a Granada ghia coupe 3l. I loved it and would jump at another, very rare now. The interior felt very upmarket with it's velour sky blue seats.

Love the memories. My memories from the early 90s growing up was my Dads 1986 Vauxhall Cavalier 1.6 L, in a non metallic white and steels! Even used to pull an Eldis caravan adorned with a brown stripe all the way down the side. Much, much simpler times.

The excitement of the annual family holiday crammed into my dads latest old banger sitting on all the bedding! It was just great. The worst year was having to fit 5 of us plus tent and equipment and the family dog into a Datsun violet 160 j sss coupe! Snug wasnt the word!

Ah, holiday family car memories.... Some time back in the '80s, my parents found the funds to rent a cottage in SW Wales for a week and all four of us went away (which was rare - usual summer holiday trip was to stay with Dad's mother in N Wales, but Mum didn't get along with her mother-in-law, so she never came along...). The cottage was lovely, the weather was lovely, but we were a few miles inland, so getting to the seaside required the car...and one day Dad dropped his keys on a beach. We got a helpful passer-by to break into the car (how useful...) so we could get our stuff out of it and it was ferried off to a Renault dealer many miles away to get new locks and keys. We had to get a taxi back to the cottage and for half of the week we couldn't go anywhere, while waiting for the car to come back. Can't imagine why so much of that week sticks in my mind forty years later!

That story of having to get the brakes fixed when funds were very tight reminds me of the hot summer of 1976. My grandmother was very ill in hospital so there were frequent visits to see her. The 1974 Simca 1100 was running on 3 cylinders but my dad did not tinker with cars and could not afford to take it to a garage. He drove it for a month like that before finally booking it in. It turned out to just need a new distributor cap!

It's amazing how cars can evoke memories of us growing up, our family was Fords when I was growing up, my first memory of a Ford was going on holiday in my Late Grandfathers 3 Door Sierra 1.6L my dad borrowed for two weeks as the Fiat 127 proved rather small for a family of 4 which included my brother who was only about 4 months old. I remember even getting a Ford Cap that holiday as well.

Ooh, one other memory popped into my head, not of one my dad had, but a sadly scrapped Monty, rootling about for bits in the good old scrapyards of old, I happened upon a sad Monty, and on opening the door I was met with the most glorious blue interior, which was as blue as that estate you drove was brown, which compared to the grey of all the Montegos & the I think beige or tan Maestro my dad had was such a big difference and I liked it a lot, and I'm sure at one point I happened upon a digital dash setup, not sure if it was Maestro or Montego, seeing that "futuristic" looking binnacle with the membrane keypads where switches would have been, all in a car laid up in the scrapheap, very early 90s too...

We had a dark blue 2.0 Mayfair 1987 saloon. I was allowed to drive it at 18 having passed my test you would never get insurance now. Went like stink. Windscreen wipers were a pain often would stall and one time sheared in the blades (on the M25) the motor ran but the wipers did not move. the engine would cut out when it was hot after a long run when you slowed for the first roundabout and the revs dropped back to idle. But it did restart.

I wish I had such memories but I don’t. We grew up without any cars. Mum wouldn’t make a driver’s license because she wouldn’t. Basta! Daddy began driving school but his eyes were too bad because of Malaria in World War 2. Our daddy’s dream car was a Simca 1100 because hatchback and practicability… But we raised up on a street with heavy traffic and a lot of lorries. So we hadn’t one car, we had thousands! 😊

Memories were consigned to the Austin showroom, Dad wanted the Montego estate, but this was 1987 and they couldn't put a date on the diesel, do the pendulum swung to an equally good BX 19RD estate, with optional rear headrests to emulate the Montego,

I love this video. Most of this rings true. We were a family of 6 and only had 5 seater cars - including my much missed Renault 21 Savanna diesel in the late 90s/ early 2000s. There were 7 of us when we went to Cornwall as my brother came too. Always wanted a Montego estate as I liked the 7 seater ones but never got one. 5:04

Boy this brings back memories. I had a 1.6 L saloon, 1.6 HL estate and a 2.0 LXi estate 7 seater that went really well. Friend had a 300,000 mile 2.0 diesel that ended up being stolen for its engine! The weakest point on the 1.6 was the crappy VW gearbox, Honda PG1 on 2.0 and diesel was so much better.

I hired a Montego Estate in the early 1990s. I don't know what model it was, but it was a 2-litre with quite a plush beige interior. It was a great load carrier, but seemed to drink fuel like a fish. The return journey was in a Sierra 1.8 CVH Estate, which used around half as much fuel as the Montego had. But of course, had less space due to the RWD arrangement. It was, however, more powerful than the Montego.

The wife and I had 6 kids between us, trying to squeeze all of us into one car was a nightmare and a source of near riots. Using 2 cars also caused arguments. Had to get a Land Rover 12. seat station wagon in the end, the wife said no to a minibus. "I'm of Romany descent but not a Gypsy" was her reason. Having 4 vehicles at home meant a lot of early morning car shunting around, my Taxi always ended up blocked in.

Don't think we got the montego in south Africa. My father worked for SAMCOR (ford factory in SA) in late 80s early 90s and had a Sierra then went over to Renault when the original Laguna came out and we had a couple of those then a couple mark 2 Lagunas and after that he had scenics and even now in Ireland I have a scenic as the family car

This is a long comment, but, the Monty memories for me aren't quite that entertaining, just that my dad had at least four Montegos (and a Maestro, which was green & gold but he resprayed red!) that I remember, only one was the estate, the other three were a trio of saloons; one a pre-facelift in silver that I was too young to remember the details of aside from the looks; a post-facelift also in silver was badged 1.6 but upgraded to a 2L EFI (drivetrain from a rear-ended estate apparently, thoughts of that plus those optional rear seats is scary!) which leaked like a seive and was often as mouldy as a barn find in only a few days after raining; and a Countryman in their dark green with the 2L Perkins (that ended up with a failed turbo that smoked like it was fuelled with wet coal in the mornings!!) which I rather loved the sound of as other diesels didn't sound the same! I forget what spec the estate was though, but I think it must have been a 2L as it was "expensive to run" (and yet, my dad bought a cello at the time........), but of all of them the memory I find most amusing is the not-a-1.6 which had a dead clock & lighter socket, which my dad couldn't figure out, and one day he was tinkering on the Maestro, and I was in the Monty poking about in the fusebox, found a blown fuse, replaced it, clock and ligher socket came back to life, which left my dad bemused as he was sure he'd checked them, but conceded he may have been thinking of the Maestro which had also previously had a couple fuses gone, and as they were virtually identical (bar the Maestro having fewer fuses as lower spec!) interior-wise, it was understandable, though, the Maestro had the older VFD clock, versus the later LCD clock in the Monty... :P
