I don't mind the rebrand in terms of calling them men's and women's, the logos themselves are awful though. Question. Do the south play more rugby than the north in a year?
@ColinGrealy7 сағат бұрын
At what level? International? Franchise? Club? Internationally, TRC teams play 6 games each tournament (3 opponents twice) vs the 6N teams playing 5 games. Then there are tours, November internationals, etc. For reference, Ireland and England played 11 games this year, whereas SA and NZ played 13 (14?).
@bravestarr17972 күн бұрын
Problem with All blacks unlike RSA is this size of the player pool. If the Stars all left to chase the bag NZ domestic and Super Rugby would suffer greatly.
@MaraisStephane2 күн бұрын
My first thought was "well it's stupid not picking up the overseas"... but on second thoughts actually that would mean all talented players would just leave the local competition for contracts in France that pay way more and that would lead to a poor local competition level and in the end most likely would make NZ rugby quite bad. So I think it's in fact a wise decision for the rugby side, but unfortunately not really for the players side. That will never be a win win situation.
@TwoCentsRugby2 күн бұрын
Yeah there's no perfect solution here sadly. We're too small a market to compete financially, but the domestic game still retains a lot of top talent - much through the allure of the black jersey. The guys we've struggled to retain are the fringe guys - it's hard to blame them for wanting to earn as much as they can given it's such a short career
@icefarrow79592 күн бұрын
For me the main issues with picking overseas players is you genuinely can't guarantee whom you've selected is the best choice, as they haven't gone up against the other, domestic candidates. That, and coach tunnel vision, as they become so focussed on who's overseas, they miss the talent on display at home, *cough* Plummer, Perofeta *cough* .
@iansinclair7581Күн бұрын
At least it is not as bad as the Jaguar rebrand.😡

500 views from India, you say? 🤔 You know, World Rugby has this weird obsession with the USA. Sure, its a big market, its a rich market, but it is very much a saturated market. You'll see some growth there, but rugby will simply never rival the major American sports in terms of viewership or attendance. Countries like India and China are really starved for proper winter sports and rugby could explode there, if World Rugby actually wanted to put the work in. And while they aren't as rich as the US markets, they are absolutely ginormous markets. This courtship over USA rugby is akin to saving up your money to one day sleep with Cindy Crawford. A worthy cause, sure, but ultimately one that is unattainable.
@TwoCentsRugby2 күн бұрын
Yeah I lived in China for years and the sport is virtually unknown there. All the boys play basketball. That being said with 7s in the Olympics they'll be getting the proper investment at the government there takes the Olympics pretty seriously. Trouble is their men's teams tend to suck. The women go ok though
@randomlyfactual19432 күн бұрын
@TwoCentsRugby Are we talking city boys? Here's my theory: farm boys makes the best rugby players. You get the Chinese lads growing up on farms to get in on the game, and you got a world cup entrant in ten years' time 😅

SR should join with League One in Japan. Four NZ teams, two Australian and six Japannese teams and two Pacific Island teams. Double round home and away games. In this years IRB team of the year, six players play their rugby in League One in Japan. They have 120 million people and much more commercial growth potential than NZ and Australia combined. If SR don't expand to include Japanese teams it will be a very big mistake for the AB's to select foreign players. SR will lose so much talent it will make it the weakest league in union. If Japan joins SR, selecting players from other leagues for the AB's won't make a big difference.

Re NZ selecting from overseas, how does NZ pay to keep our players in Super rugby without foreign funds? I'm of the opinion that super rugby cannot be sustained financially. That means salaries will stagnate for non ABs. To ask rugby players to forego greater financial reward for putting their body on the line for the POSSIBILITY of playing for the ABs is similar to giving them a lottery ticket. I just don't get how nz rugby thinks they're going to finance all the salaries and stay competitive WITHOUT dangling a manipulative cherry out in each player contract which they know will never be fulfilled Programs - i remember getting programs after matches in the 80s and early 90s. I actually recall my dad giving me programs when i was like 5 or 6 for games he went to but i was too young (embankment at Lancaster Park was kinda terrifying when i was little)
@aluncurtis61242 күн бұрын
Don't the ABs use overseas players already with the inclusion of Pacific Islanders? Seriously though, to deny a sportsman the opportunity of financial gain seems draconian and archaic. Let them make some money while they can.

If we pick overseas players we will weaken the All Blacks long term because all our super rugby players will play overseas, super rugby will be made up of NPC quality players and all our overseas player will become eligible to whatever country they play in and suddenly 10yrs down the track our only hope will be that we are picking talent before its picked elsewhere. Furthermore generations down the truck we will not have player like Clarke playing for the All Blacks because all our quality players will be playing overseas and their kids will be born overseas and we will lose so many great rugby genetics it will be a disaster
