I also didn't think I needed a guide, but I actually learned something after 1,5k hours playing this game: there is a Quick Start button! How did I not notice that before?! Crafting empires is one of my favourite things to do, so I would never click it anyway, but more than that I seem to have completely blocked it out of my field of vision somehow. Like I'm selectively blind or something. I was honestly startled and confused when I saw Montu click it. Felt a bit like I was losing my mind, or like Montu was gaslighting me. I needed to check if that button is actually there XD

I was brought to stellaris as a long-time civilization player looking for a game that’s a bit more complex. As a side note, I’d love to get a companion video to this for people who have been playing for a while but are still bad, with things like early game tips, timing for when to build up fleets, what techs are important to target etc.

I started playing and loving Civ6 a few years ago, and when I looked for other 4x games to play, stellaris popped up. It's a very different game, that's why both are cool. You said you wanna do a guide on DLC stuff , that's cool, a lot of systems in the DLC. What I haven't had yet are ideas for general strategy, long term, and how to win when you're not going for Dominance over the whole Galaxy - maybe it really just is keeping up with economy and teching a lot, but I have the feeling that can't be it. If I even win my games I barely do so on the easiest difficulty.

A nice little refresher. The game changes with each update, so features one had forgotten about may suddenly become very relevant. So even though I've been playing for a good while, I still appreciate videos like this. As for what got me into Stellaris... Scott Manly has a couple of Stellaris LP's on his channel, and it snowballed from there. I used to be an avid Spore player, and Stellaris is everything I wish Spore Space Stage was.

Well done! I'm waiting for the next episode. Stellaris is a really addictive and multi-option game, a must for a sci-fi fan. I think you forgot to mention changing setting for showing colony designation icons. Unless they changed the default setting. For people reading this, if your icon next to the planet name on the right side shows you the planet type (continental, tundra etc) and not Empire Capital (or other designations) then click on the cog on the top right of the outliner and check the bottom setting.

It’s also very useful to tick the box in the lower right corner to un-clutter the galaxy UI. In particular, exploited resources change from green to invisible, and Anomalies become invisible unless you have a Science Ship selected. If you want to see everything temporarily, just hold down the Alt key.

Why am I here? I follow most of what Montu puts out, I like most of your videos. And yes, sometimes I watch beginners' videos even after I've been playing again, partly for nostalgia, partly to see if I've missed or forgotten some basic aspect of the game. How did I get into Stellaris in the first place? I somehow came across it on a TVTropes binge and the psionic/biological/synthetic divide piqued my interest. Between the three different forms of FTL (yeah, that's how long ago it was), the three different forms of weapons (that you chose one to start with), and the three different ascension paths, I was hooked.

Well since you were so kind as to ask, Montu, I must say the reason I started played Stellaris was because my friend had been playing it religiously over the course of a month and it drew my attention. As soon as I got into it I was HOOKED. Strategy games are right up my alley and anything that allows me to personalize my character/faction is exactly what I love as well. I've never played a game with more roleplay potential and I expect to play this game until... a very long time!

Though i never play multiplayer. You wanna know why I like Stellaris, Montu? It's easy. It's The Sims mixed with real-time strategy. I've never played even a single campaign with victory turned on, as I get the most fun out of watching the galaxy - not even my own Empire, but my neighbors as well, friend _or_ foe - develop while I snowball into oblivion. Plus, there's no other game where I can really play as a relatively accurate simulacrum of the Borg Collective. (I find Driven Assimilators to be the most fun Empire types, especially with the capacity for late-game Pop snowballing via mass assimilation) Second only to my DAs is Megacorps. I've never _not_ had fun as a Megacorp, especially since the first one I made (an Avian race that just wanted to sell people healthy, delicious eggs that I called the Mahard Egg Farm after an egg-farming company that used to be pretty big in the US) wound up with a Trade Value Energy output equivalent to 7-8 Dyson Spheres per month. And my second Megacorp (the Salesbeetles of the Empire known as the Bugs of Sale, who'd hock _anything_ for the right price) wound up at _fifteen_ Dyson Spheres per month. I couldn't spend my money fast enough, I _deliberately_ went triple over my Starbase Cap _just_ to increase maintenance costs so I'd have a money sink. I like Stellaris because I enjoy breaking it in increasingly hilarious ways.

I might need to try and pick up this game again. This was my go-to game back in the day, then with the MegaCorp DLC (I think?) the core game mechanics were radically changed, and unfortunately I'm one of those people that really doesn't like things I'm used to changing because it required a relearning how to play. As a result I haven't touched the game since. Maybe enough time has passed that I forgot how to do stuff, so relearning a new system will be less painful.

I was introduced to Stellaris after wanting to play a strategy's game with my girlfriend and trying to find such a game we'd find mutually enjoyable. Sci-fi space themes (especially of the political and exploration veins) are one of, in not my favourite genre of any media. It's quickly become my favourite game to play and I deeply appreciate guides like this. 9:18 I don't know if this would play out well, but I wish the starbase capacity would only count for the highest level tech starbases. The thought is that the new stuff is harder to make due to bugs and possible supply line issues. While the older stuff is easier to use because the bugs and supply issues have been figured out. It erks me when I need to build starbases at my borders, but I need a trading post in my empire to exploit the unused trade lanes. Maybe that was intended.

How I got into Stellaris: I like CK, I like other space 4x games, it seemed a reasonable bet I'd enjoy this too. Question though: how much and of what should I be using my very beginning starting resources to get? Should I be getting a tonne of science ships or is just one fine? Should I have colony ships rolling off the production line from the word 'go' or wait until I've actually surveyed habitable worlds I want? Should I be dropping starbases everywhere around me at first, or very picky where I build them? And if I'm supposed to be very picky, where is it better to drop them first if I have to choose between systems that are chokepoints but with no habitable worlds vs low-positional-value-but-has-high-habitability-planet systems?
