Edit: I've goten several comments about price. I am in no way suggesting this is a cost effective option. I already had the Werkstatt and the Keystep adds a lot of functionality. There are a lot of more convenient options for the price of this whole setup.
Short vid about how to connect the Arturia Keystep to the Moog Werkstatt using the CV expander. One thing I forgot to mention is to make sure you use Arturia's MIDI control center app to set the output to 5v or you might burn out your Werkstatt. I'm not an expert and I didn't write out what I was going to say beforehand so I stumble a bit. I hope it's helpful anyway. Happy Synth-ing!

I've been using it for that. That's one if the few things I can get it to do in fact. ...and it is really useful and cool. But this synth is also kind of confusing to me. I know it's because of ignorance but nevertheless it is true. I found the grandmother to be easy as pie, this little guy...well...I really want it to work but I feel kinda lost usually. So far I just use it to make weird noises mostly. Like circuit bending or something.

Thanks for describing just how to calibrate with the trimmer and adjusting it to get that octave, something I rarely attempt with analog cv. Something that’s really fundamental and a basic and mandatory and yet I tell myself it’s too deep for me and I think ‘I’ll ruin its calibration’ as it is, off as it may be. I’m glad you made this video, as I am new to cv stuff but I’ve been around MIDI for decades. Arturia is responsible for my interest in analog (friend gave me a microBrute and then I saw an ad for BeatstepPro and that sent me off). Moog is sometimes called the 1.15 Volt per Octave standard, where it’s supposed to be 1.0Volts /Octave. I haven’t really done anything professional with my analog stuff to care yet so I’m taking a lesson from you on the whole calibration effort. I gotta start somewhere. Thank you great job, don’t ever let anyone tell you that you’re too new to make videos, because there’s plenty of younger folks coming up who need to learn from zero and like you pointed out, no ones making ‘basics’ videos. You just may have inspired me to start uploading my own.

I haven't noticed, but okay. Still, I wanted to figure out how to use the Werkstatt as a CV source, as there is now no Gate-Out, only a KB CV-Out for pitch. From reading the manual, these connections all exist in the patchable header, but they are not patched into the CV Extension. Only 12/22 connectors are patched out, hence the differences in versions. Unfortunately the Moog Mavis (aka Werkstatt v2) is the same, no Gate-Out - so I have not figured out how to connect the two without a Sequencer to drive both. My 3rd Moog, the Theremini also only has the CV-Out for pitch (but no CV inputs) so this must be a cheaper Moog thing.

Watched your video again. Good information and again, thanks. Just hooked my two devices up identically. I'm a novice at this, it's working but I notice a significant loss of the initial Moog 'punch' when a key is depressed and and also a loss of sustain, compared to how the Moog sounds when standalone - muffled; it almost sounds like a cassette player with the dolby function engaged. The 'punch' I refer to is perhaps voltage loss when the key is pressed or released? I don't know and again, I'm a beginner and my terminology is probably suspect. I've twiddled and tweaked things again and again but can't seem to overcome the issue. Also I noticed the chord function isn't working; I don't think that would be the fault of the Moog being monophonic because that information is stored, one key at a time, in the KeyStep's memory, I believe. When a keystroke is pressed to release the created chord, it should be a monophonic note received to the Werkstatt. Any thoughts, anyone? Thanks.

I'm about to start working with a Beatstep Pro and my Werkstatt, I'm not so sure if I can change the voltage out off the Beatstep to +/- 5v . I've use it as it is out of the box and seems to work ok, but I'm afraid I can burn my mood in the long run if I keep doing it. So I got a attenuator cable to manage the voltage into the Werkstatt, that can be a different route to explore before drilling holes in your unit.
@circkus
@circkus 7 жыл бұрын
On the keystep you can control the voltage with a setting on the "MIDI Control Center" software. (which you can download here: www.arturia.com/support/keystepquickstart) I don't have a beatstep, but I'd imagine it's similar. Smarter people than me have said that more than 5 volts is ok for the werkstatt, but I understand it's a point of debate in some online communities. The drilling I am going to do is for the proper gate input mod.

Hello! I am confused on how this works! is the midi output converted through the keystep into it's 3 voltage ports --> then goes into the Werkstatt--> where the sound is then relayed through the werkstatt's line out and into your interface and out of the DAW (as an external instrument) through your speakers? Or is there a CV plugin you have to get to make this work on Ableton, even with the keystep? (I ask for the clarification bc im trying to use an akai 49 to do this, only it does not have cv gate outputs only midi and usb, so trying to figure out what converter I need to make a chain into a scarlet 212 interface) hope this makes sense Thank you! Sera
@circkus
@circkus 2 жыл бұрын
There is no DAW in this example, and I use Reaper, so I'm going to be useless for what to do in Ableton. Hopefully I can help a little anyway. The KeyStep has MIDI IN and OUT and CV out. The CV out is the key to controlling the Werkstatt. Anything that sends CV out (there are some details about voltage, I'm speaking generally here) can control the Werkstatt. The Werkstatt is not different from any other synth, or even a guitar as far as your audio connection is concerned, Werkstatt audio out into audio interface in. If you're able to send MIDI to any other synth, sending MIDI to the Keystep controller is the same. You want to send FROM the DAW on the same channel that the Keystep is listening on. The Keystep then converts the MIDI data into CV signals, and sends that out to the Werkstatt. DAW MIDI OUT -> Keystep MIDI IN / Keystep CV out -> Werkstatt. The original Keystep is fairly affordable at around $125 the last time I checked, and it's dead easy to hook up. If you can get a MIDI to CV converter, it should do the same trick. The Keystep is just a good MIDI to CV converter. Good luck!

Still looking for info on how to connect to other equipment. I have a grandmother. I find it confusing regardless of what I learn. This is useful but I can't find much useful info to help get me started with the werstatt. There's a lot that's obvious and a lot of concrete shit I see I'm clearly missing in using the Werkstatt. I'm sure there's more clever stuff I can do and the main thing that I find confusing is these outputs and how they relate to the grandmother's inputs and what possibilities there are. I have experimented, read, watched videos...inputs still not confident...and that's weird for me as I'm usually doing the react opposite and feeling very confident in my mastery of the thing with synths. Most things I try just make bullshit muffled noises or do nothing. I'm sure I'm fucking this up and it's all me but I'd love to find more material with real teeth like this video. Things that produce real out comes. Before I start opening it up and soldering I'd like to at least understand what the basic thing does without mods.

If I go gate to gate then I get the sound of the Moog but the keys on the Werkstat won't play individual notes. The slide will work the vcf and the sequencer will only sequence the one note played on the Moog. Read the manual, downloaded the Midi controller checked it's on 5v nothing works. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.☹️

I don't know what you mean by "If I go gate to gate", but the rest of it sounds like you're describing one long note that is just changing pitch. Just under the Moog logo you will see the VCA section with the "Mode" switch, it should be set to "EG" which means "Envelope Generator". If it's set to "ON" it will continuously sound. If I've missed your point entirely, try describing your problem again. I'll do my best to help.

@circkus

The frequency knob in the top left in the VCO section controls your pitch. I am not sure, but I think I have my keystep root note F1 or F2. So then when I press the lowest F on the keystep, I then adjust the frequency knob until the werkstatt is making an F then I try an octave up, and an octave above that. The V5 trimpot is used to calibrate the octaves to the input device. The frequency knob is to set the main pitch. So every time I want to play on the higher end of, say f4 - f6, then I need to adjust the frequency knob to make the lowest note on the keystep play f4. If I want to go back down to f1 - f3 I adjust the frequency knob again.

Thank you for this, it helped me hook up my Arturia Keystep 37 with the Werkstatt. I'm having an issue with the Werkstatt though. There's a constant note (tone) generated right as I plug it in and any note (button) I play will continue indefinitely until I press another key. Did not use to do that a few months ago when I bought it. I've tried adjusting or turning off the Sustain switch and knobs and it does nothing to change it. Just constantly plays the last note I played until I hit a new one, then that just plays indefinitely etc. Does anyone have any ideas on this? The Werkstatt is not very old but I'm wondering if something has gone faulty, or if it's just my lack of programming skills? Any advice is appreciated!

The VCA (voltage controlled amplitude) switch has two modes, ON and EG (envelope generator). ON behaves as you're describing, EG uses the envelope settings from the ENVELOPE section. If your VCA switch is set to EG and it still behaves like that, contact Moog.

Thanks for your response. After watching your video and a couple of others I did try the VCA switch as you suggested and it did fix the problem. Now I could have sworn I did try that earlier, but maybe not! So next time I will try having the VCA switch 'on' before I plug the Moog in, which will replicate the conditions, just to make sure it does not somehow get stuck if already activated when the unit first powers on. Probably not, but just to be certain. If no issues, then that solves that. Thanks again for your good video and response.

The calibration is mostly about getting all of your notes in tune. It's like intonation for a guitar. You want the lowest A (for example) and the highest A to both be in tune. You tune the lowest note with the frequency knob, and then get the higher note in tune using the calibration. No sound at all is not calibration. Does the workstatt sound when you hit the button keys? Is it creating an audible frequency?

@MrFlatlandcycle
@MrFlatlandcycle 7 жыл бұрын
Synthnerd, your knowledge is way beyond most. I defer to you as to what voltage/current the Werkstatt can withstand. I can't find the source, but above 9V sticks in my head as to be avoided. I don't see anything above 5V or below -5V in the specifications for control voltage recommendations. Anything beyond 5V is likely to be inaudible anyway, right? All we get from Moog is when using external sources avoid currents and voltages beyond what the circuitry can withstand.

Yeah, the manual gives -/+ 5V as the VCO CV input range, but I've had no problems feeding more than +5V into mine. I've used it with several sequencers and interfaces with no problem on that front. I'd basically just plug whatever pitch CV you have in there, and enjoy playing. The technical details of this might be something to cover in a future blog post. Otherwise, I notice Justin picked up on the issues around not having a true Gate input. That was the initial reason I started modding my own Werkstatt, and actually the Gate mod has been my most popular post, probably for good reason. I completely understand being wary of trying it, but it does make the Werkstatt more useable and if you know someone who can solder well, it might be worth buying them a beer...

Hi, Great video - I've managed to calibrate my Werkstatt-01 to an Alturia Keystep, however the pitch for middle C on the keyboard and above is really high. They 0-Volts key on the Keystep is the lowest C key on the keyboard. You have to shift the octave down by it's maximum to find it (I think you hit the Oct- button 4 times). This is the only key that doesn't change pitch when you tweak the VR5 knob. tuning this to C2 and calibrating means that - as I then move up to the 'middle' of the keyboard using the Oct+ button then the notes are getting really high pitch to the point they become inaudible in the upper half of the keyboard. In the Arturia Midi Control Centre I can see I can adjust the note for the 0-Volt key. It's currently set to C2 as the factory default. I tried setting this to C0 but then had trouble getting other notes calibrated off this as the VR5 knob reached its max adjustment before tuning them i think. Any suggestions?
@circkus
@circkus 3 жыл бұрын
The way I used it was to set 0v to E1 (I just confirmed in MIDI Control Center). Then with the octaves on the keystep in the middle (neither button lit), I just used the two and a half octaves available on the keyboard without shifting the octaves up or down. Choosing E1 allowed the lowest F to pitch bend down, and the highest C to be in tune. If I wanted to play lower or higher notes, I would just adjust the FREQ knob to where the lowest F on the keyboard was in the range I wanted. I didn't really use the octave buttons. So even though MIDI Control Center thinks the lowest note is E1, I could use a tuner and adjust the FREQ knob to where it was really playing an E5. I wouldn't expect to play 88 notes at the same time on the Werkstatt. I hope that helps.

what is the app name for key tones? thx
@circkus
@circkus 6 жыл бұрын
I might not understand your question. There isn't an app involved in the tones. The keystep is connected to the computers usb for power only. There is a "Midi Control Center" app that Aturia provides to control some of the options of the keystep, such as amount of pitch bend etc. But that is not creating any tones. All of the tones in this setup are coming from the Moog Werkstatt-01. The cv out (controlled voltage) from the keystep is going in to the CV Expander to control the Werkstatt. What you are hearing is the werkstat's pure analog sound.

He means the app you used for tuning. The one on your iPhone.

That makes more sense. I have an Android and I use an app called "gStrings" it's 3 or 4 bucks and worth it. It works very well and has a lot of options if you need them.

I was already planning to get a Werkstatt & Keystep when I stumbled onto this video. One question: does the Keystep require a computer? I'm trying to avoid using a computer in my rig.
@circkus
@circkus 5 жыл бұрын
The Keystep does not require a computer to operate. However, many of the options are only accessible through their "MIDI control center" program, including the volt per octave setting. So you don't need a computer hooked up to play it, you really do need one to get the most out of it and set it up properly.

@@circkus I'm really late to the party, but I found your video very helpful! Say, once you've set it up through the PC, will the keystep keep those settings when disconnected? Or will I have to re-apply the settings every time?

I don't use the glide function much, so I didn't even think to test it. I'll have to give it a go.
@circkus
@circkus 7 жыл бұрын
The answer is: No glide. I'm guessing that's because the glide is wired in to the little button keyboard on the werkstatt so it doesn't effect the cv in from the keystep.

When I go down past the note I have set as the lowest note for the keystep I get one note. Try changing octaves on the keystep.

I sprung for _Analog Lab 2_ (Arturio software) for $89. Keystep => USB => PC, gives me more than I need. That's polyphonic (chords). Arturio tech support/instruction set is vacuous.
@chriskelvin248
@chriskelvin248 7 жыл бұрын
Arturia tech support via the forums is below average in my experience. But, there is a 71 page instruction manual that is quite good- can be downloaded off the Arturia site as pdf. That answered pretty much anything I couldn't just figure out myself.
