@@snrz150 I'd say Steven was created to be blissfully ignorant, and therefore he can be "brave". So when he is afraid while his Mom is pounding on the door, he transitions into Steven, so he doesn't feel that fear, then once his Mom breaks in Jake comes out, to take the hurt and shield Steven's innocence. Once the beating is over, Steven probably comes back again, so rather than Marc having to lay there in pain thinking about how his Mother just beat him, he can just be Steven and nothing actually happened. Steven is a way for him to escape either the fear of, or the traumatic after effects of, the beatings by his Mom, by become someone who it just doesn't happen to, Steven, who has a mother that loves and cherishes him, and would never do that.

Steven is Marc's Alter that loving his mom, Jake is Marc's Alter that wanting to rebel, to fight back or even to kill the mother. It's like everything came back full circle in this episode.

I watched this with my husband, who at a young age, was taken away from his mom because she was incredibly abusive to him and his siblings. He related so much to this episode, it was so heartbreaking. Even the leaving at a young age, but kinda going off of what you guys said he actually told me after it ended that he did not want to have children due to what happened to him because he was scared of the mom they would have. But he said when he met me he knew his children would have the perfect mom for his children because I was the complete opposite of his mother. Very sad, but very sweet exchange between my husband and I that I thought was sweet to share.

I think this episode was the best and the most emotional I’ve gotten. The way you understood Steve and Marc was at a level of how we think internally. All of us go through a place in ourselves to find that numbing pain. When we’re alone, all we can do is make a friend out of ourselves. And once you saw yourself letting go of a part of you. When Steve turned into stone… it was basically Marc watching himself perish. It’s very ironic how Steve got thrown in the sand instead of Marc. You would expect the narrator to place Steve at that place where the tall grass were and where the sun was setting. But Marc got to feel at peace. It’s like they switched places for a brief second. Sometimes you gotta let that part of you that’s hurting also be at peace.

Theory (*edit: I put all the Vs in the right place lmao*): I found it very interesting that Marc was already at terms with what happened in his life because of his manifestation of Steven. But, when Steven gets thrown off the boat, the scales immediately balance because (maybe) Steven still hadn’t been fully at terms with the life that happened around him. I wonder if the scales would have balanced had Marc and Steven embraced sooner than the climactic end we saw.

Btw when “marc” stands up with the pyramid in his hand at the start of the episode, a lot of people (including myself) are theorising that was Jake. The accent is different, he is a bit more witty, eyes are widened, more brutal (literally tries to stab himself in the eye). I don’t think Jake is going to be a key part in this season, most likely for a season 2, but still cool to see references to him.

I know I'm a little bit late to the party, but as an Egyptology nerd I wanted to offer some extra info to help you guys understand what the weighting of hearts ceremony does, the outcomes, and what the Duat and Aaru (Field of Reeds) actually are, at least from a mythology standpoint. Just some random nerd knowledge. :) The Duat was not considered Hell in the way monotheistic religions portray it with all the hellfire and anguish and whatnot. The name in Egyptian is actually "dwꜣt", a biliteral word combining "under" and "world" (which some still debate, but either way it's words similar to that meaning), but it makes it more like a form of purgatory than anything. The link people make to it being like hell is mostly because of it being a subterranean realm, just like where the location of hell is described in other religious texts. Every soul goes to the Duat for judgment. For those who have hearts lighter or in balance with the feather, they are allowed to leave the Duat and ascend to Aaru, where they live their afterlife in eternal peace, prosperity, and rest. Aaru is similar to heaven, but it's more of a paradise full of an abundance of crops, wealth, and prosperity. Ushabti figurines (or in this context, it's actually shabti figurines) represented servants who would help the deceased do manual labor or chores when they reached Aaru, allowing them to rest and relax peacefully without the worry of having to tend to the crops or make food. For those who are unbalanced, they remain in the Duat to wander eternally, facing constant challenges as they try to find balance, some never finding it at all and remaining frozen in sand, consumed by their guilt. This is why Marc began to turn to sand in the finale, it was the guilt of not being able to save Steven weighing down his heart. But, if a person's soul is able to heal and shed the guilt weighing their heart down, they can petition to be judged again. If they are judged again and their heart is lighter or in balance with the feather, they are reincarnated for a second chance to reach Aaru with that life. They retain no memories of their first life so as to not influence the true nature of their soul with the result of their initial judgment. Marc had already made it to Aaru, so he was not reincarnated or judged again, he was just yeeted back into his body through Osiris' gate. However, if the person is deemed unworthy with a heart heavier than the feather, their heart-and essentially their soul-is fed to Ammit and consumed. The person's very being is destroyed. No afterlife, no second chance. And that, to the Ancient Egyptians, was a worse fate than any hell a monotheistic religion could create.

My theory is that this whole show is the process of creating Jake. Steven was made to live out a happier life free of Marcs trauma. I think Jake will fully form by the end as the version Marc he thinks himself as. Jake can take over for a bit but not for long. I think by the end Marc will see himself as a killer and evil monster. Which in turn would finalize the creation of the Jake personality. Jake will be a cold blooded killer, or pretty much the worse version of Marc who enjoys the pain he brings. He'll be what Marc is afraid he'll become being Moon Knight.

No, Jake has most likely been around from the beginning as well. Both Steven and Marc are unaware of his existence, a younger Steven was shown to have come out right before their Mom was going to start a beating.. that wouldn't make sense if Steven remembers nothing of their Mom's violence.. Jake would probably take it, or sometimes Marc. Jake is highly protective of the body and himself, he was in this episode threatening Harrow with the glass pyramid. I hope they don't boil him down to the violent murderous alter, since that's pretty ableist.
