The Mafia and candy stores/sweet shops have a history. I think Mooney did a show on the candy store, now a deli, that Murder Inc. did their business out of. Apparently the boss, Abe Reles, and some of his friends who were later the core of Murder Inc. hung out in the same candy store as kids and the owner knew them most of their lives. The Sweet Shop was just continuing the tradition. As I recall the American drug smuggler (played by Tony Lo Bianco) who set up the American end in "The French Connection" (which was closely based on fact) runs a small Brooklyn candy store as a front. He gets burned when Gene Hackman and Roy Scheider see him partying with big time hoods at the Copacabana. A little out of character for the owner of a small candy store. That supposedly happened in real life too.
