Top tip as they say. Always remove the fill plug 1st before draining out the old oil. If you drain it then discover you can’t get the filler cap out your stuck with a gearbox with no oil and no way of refilling it.

What would you do if the plug WAS stuck? just keep riding forever with the same oil? Just kidding. :) If that bike is your only transportation and you might possibly need to travel on it to borrow or buy a tool to remove the cap, then your idea would be a helpful one.
@malcolmdown9170 Жыл бұрын
@@xl250mon5 it happens more often than you’d expect. It happened to a mechanic I used to work with on a mini gearbox. I know this isn’t a bike but believe me it is a thing.

Yep, find out if you can undo the fill before drain, or you are going to put aside some unexpected time into it.

Penny's camera work puts us right there with you, so much so that I'm sure I could smell that unmistakable sulphur stink of gear oil. 😁 Being an old timer from the US it's nice to occasionally get to use a few of the old standard size wrenches you have a truckload of but mostly just take up space these days. Great job as always Del and Penny. Cheers friends.❤👍👍

You're so right Rick, it's wonderful to still be able to use the old tools I've had for a lifetime... and you're so right as well about the sulphur smell, it's certainly not the nicest thing you'll smell today lol Have a great week there, all the best, D&Px

I noticed your replacement o-ring was a larger cross-section diameter than the one that came off. I also have those o-ring sets in the red box and noticed they are fatter o-rings generally. Is that a problem having a ‘fatter’ ring on the plug?

Never noticed a problem mate, they fit snugly into the chamfer on the sump and seal first time..

Ah the gear box - that house of a thousand levers, a chaotic yet well choreographed elbow fight in ever consistent circles (you hope). Shear-load city, the dreaded Nemesis of many a hopeful long-chain molecule, pitiless grinder of anything daft enough to sit among it's myriad of slip-sliding faces for too long. Makers have tried all kinds of bushes, bearings & magic potions over the years, from melt-on-demand grease packing, to weasle-waz TQF on draught, but the best advice is to recognise that while you're out strutting your stuff & looking uber-cool, it's still mincing along underneath & giving your lube a hard time, especially 'up-town'. Correct & good quality gear oil keeps them cool & happy - helps you find 'neutral' too : )xx

What viscosity oil for the transmission?
@Moonfleet4110 ай бұрын
Covered the oil at 5:13 Jim, if you're in a normal temperate climate, use a dedicated gear oil for the job, It'll usually be a 75/90 multigrade, it'll give you smoother, quieter shifts and cut down on wear. Plenty of brands to chose from, i used Amsoil Transmission oil here, you can see how thick it is at 5:42 ! Opinions differ in brands mate, the dealer will always recomend their own oil, So maybe do some research and choose what you're happy with mate !

Was thinking about my old bmw k100 yesterday funnily enough, and now you did this video Del. I would put the best ep90 oil I could find, and funnily enough, it was an American brand. Funny stuff is that oil as it's smelly going in. Good stuff, though. Ps the vw trike fell through. Insurance companies would only give me third party only and because I have no garage and I wasn't going to risk losing my investment and not getting my money back! All the best, Del and Penny x

Hi Del and Penny. I'm glad you made the comment about the gearbox oil Del. Their is no substitute for proper gear oil and the amount of life it adds to the gearbox. My old Guzzi was done every twelve months. Engine gearbox and diff. Even my old Vauxhall I did the gearbox diff and engine before heading off on one of our National Rallies. You are adding so much life and long-term trouble-free running to your much-loved vehicle. Many thanks as always. 😊
