This bowl tested me for sure. When I poured the resin I had no idea a rock or something was waiting inside. This is my story of the Ghoulish Halloween Bowl.

Honey... you seriously need a vacuum chamber! Pull that resin into the wood holes & cracks before you put it into the pressure pot! It will make a difference. Especially with Total Boat Resin. Gorgeousness on this piece! 🤟💞👻🎃

Hey Kate, I have a vacuum chamber the issue is I let my resin heat up to 120° before pouring to keep them separated. A vacuum cannot be used because the bubbles will be coming up as the resin hardens.

Out of curiosity, wouldn't it better to have put the pieces under vacuum to ensure all the internal voids in the wood were filled? Just asking.

You can only use vacuum for so long. And when I’m heating up the resin I have to use pressure not vacuum. Because the resin will harden up in the time it takes to vacuum out any air.

Based on the sparks, it might have been a rock with some quartz in it. I cut some recently on my rock saw (using a diamond blade), and all the quartz ones were sparking. Some of the granite that had a lot of quartz in them were sparking as well. Beautiful end result!

Might have been. I never saw anything, but most of the time with rootballs you find rocks of some sort.

Always love seeing the Halloween projects. The jack o lantern is still my favorite. This bowl looks amazing with the colors you picked. Every orange looks different and this blended well with the black.

My carbide tools get WAY more use, mostly because I've never learned to use the traditional ones (got them at least). That is one pretty candy bowl you've made Ken!

I like carbide for mass removal, but prefer my HSS tools. But most times carbide gets it done.

I was never fond of the color orange, especially a bright orange. I’m quite sure that the intense dislike I had for it, stemmed from the very unfortunate but, very popular home decor trends of my childhood in the 70’s. Harvest gold.. avocado green and of course bright orange accents.😂 Now I love it, it reminds me of fall; my favorite season and I have burnt orange sprinkled throughout the house.😆 Sorry to see it give you such a hard time but, it is gorgeous! The colors slightly blending but, still maintaining separation and that wonderful swirl is stunning! Add the beauty of the rootball and it is an amazing piece Ken! It’s definitely at the top of my fav’s list.

The hand looks great! I'm glad it's healed up for you. The bowl looks awesome! I just had a big sugar maple cut down in my yard because it was too close to the power lines. I kept the trunk. There is some gnarly grain in it. I plan to have my lathe set up by the spring so I can start on this turning adventure. Outstanding work as usual!

Mr. Moon, have you ever done dioramas? Back, during the Vietnam war, when my dad was home on shore duty, he did a few coffee tables. One was a beach scene, that concisted of sea life and beach goers. Another of his pieces was coffee table that was a cribbage board. If I'm not mistaken, my sister has one or both of them. I wish I had pictures of them.

I've been binging on woodturning videos lately. I took a 25-year Hiatus from woodturning to explore kayak Manufacturing and I'm just now getting back into it. So many new tools and techniques. The bowl is stunning. I think back to one of my old Robert sorby ring tools and wonder how that would hold up with epoxy? Great job and fun to watch. BTW what kind of Lathe is that? I don't recognize it.

@@MoonpieCreations you should try making another one . Just resin no wood , I’d like to see with some clear and pinks . Could even do clear with pink colors of say dice resin if you had molds . Not sure how actual yarn would do I wouldn’t think it would be. . I’d you hade sphere molds you could put yarn inside there with clear resin then but then in a resin bowl. Just some thoughts. .
