The 'Junkyard Dog' 440 surprised me, as I had guessed 398, but that 429 was outstanding for it! Love the engine shop, as someone who helped a neighbor kids dad change a engine at 11yrs. old, then rebuilt my 1st carb at 15, and my 1st engine at 16(a Ford 300 inline 6,ran like a top for many yrs. after), would love to be in there. It's also amazing how many around the world are emotionally invested in the K. Challenger already! May be the most famous car in the world when it's done, and the momento's from around the world are just off the charts cool! Got my Nick's Garage Swag I'm wearing, and have my eye on a few more pieces of it too!

We were 16 in the 70s. And you could get 440s and 383s from the local wrecking yard for a hundred bucks. They were already loose, so we would just stick a cam, a 780 Holley, a torker manifold, and some fender well headers. We would stuff them into a 67 notchback Cuda, and go street racing. We had no problem blowing off 396 Chevelles. Good cheap thrills.

Sometimes your posts really get to me. An "engineless" Charger, that was in good shape, but it had no "heart". A young mechanic that wanted to build it, to see "Baby" run. A 440 out of a mobile home, with its block that had "hour Glass" water passages and big valve heads. Yeah it was missing a few part as well, no intake, no starter, no water pump or ballencer. Several friends and junkyards came up with everything for the "operation". I still remember each person that gave or sold me at the "good guys" Price. Every part that was put into "Baby" I even got my first 6 pack manifold with it's 3 Holly's at a car shop that had changed it for a single 4 barrel set up because the owner couldn't master the 6 pack. His loss, my gain... Didn't Pontiacs have 6 packs? Yup, thanks Micky... We didn't have a Dyno, but my mentor and myself built our first "Run in stand". It took me 3 weeks, working at night, weekends... Breakfast, lunch and dinner was eaten sitting on old van seats... Just to get back to "Baby". Watching that "possibly" unbalanced 440 Frankenstein engine start right up and running pretty smooth. It bought me back over 50 years I liked the " betting" on the orphan engines first pull. Priceless... The way of the muscle car will never die. Tommy

They just don't "Have the touch" It's easy to put together the hi tech parts, But it takes the "Touch" to keep our art alive. You know the Kowalski car, and the "orphaned" 440... They are our art. The way of the muscle car will never die. Thanks again Nick!

Big blocks are easy to get power from. Mopar, Ford, Chevy etc. it doesn’t matter. In fact, it takes more effort to make them dogs. Look at the late seventies and eighties big blocks. They all blatantly put the crapiest heads, cams, and tiny exhaust along with anemic advance curves and lean jetting to make them insane gas hogs that made essentially mild small block power. A terrible waste in my opinion. Imagine a 220 hp. 454. 😳 I remember Chevy putting fake Quadrajet 4 barrels on engines, and also 4 barrels that only opened the secondaries a tiny bit.

@mattbauckman99076 жыл бұрын
Paul Dana It was a 2 barrel carb that from a glance looked just like a Quadrajet 4 barrel. It would bolt into a 4 barrel intake. The whole secondary section was blocked off with no hardware or components. And like you said before, it was the secondary air valves that were purposely setup to not open all the way. It was especially common on a lot of Chevy 305’s for some reason.

Before watching the dyno, I'm guessing 373hp. For reference to my question, I'm in my mid-50s. What is a new school spark plug tool? I glanced online and saw the first two things I'm about to mention. I've used the same gap tool you used in the past and before that I used feeler gauges, but my Grandfather who taught me a LOT about everything mechanical used to frown on those. Oh, I think the last type gauge I've used was round but it had metal loops around the perimeter with various sizes. Perhaps that's what you mean? That would make sense because there's no gray area, as in user error finding the precise sweet spot with the type you are using.

Well i guess im old school then. Because thats how we gapped the plugs when i was a kid.
