@@sbfguy7793 I'm all for old school car's and motors myself otherwise I wouldn't be here. But be real dude.. Saying computer's in car's is "garbage" is one of the dumbest thing's you could literally say, they've done nothing but been the opposite of garbage except for the earliest teething year's which are LOOOONG gone since the late 80's and early 90's.. They've made car's faster, more powerful, more torque, more efficient, ride better, handle better, be smarter at adapting to road conditions, get way more power out of smaller N/A engine's while still staying reliable, make engine's last longer by making the fuel trim perfect at all times so it's not rich or lean. Then finally the computer's themselves being constantly perfected to be more reliable and seamless over the years. I had a '93 Mazda Miata with the original 26 year old at the time ECM inside and it still worked and functioned 100% fine.. Sure EFI had some initial teething problems, that's not up for debate, but it's not 1985 anymore. EFI is *THE* way to go for big power and effciency.. Modern Electronic Engine Management technology has opened up WORLD'S of tuning and optimal customization based off the real world conditions the car is facing in real time and made car's *infinitely* easier to drive and operate. Whether it's as fun or not is the heavily debated part, It's a different kind of fun I'd have to say. I have a modern car, It's a 2016 Mazda MX-5 "ND" Miata with a 6 speed manual and it's a fantastic car, and most other people will agree with that statement too. Not all modern cars are dull and boring bro. You just have to look for them and find them. One thing we could probably both agree on though. SCREW EV's, Biggest soulless cars on the face of the earth. A 90 HP Honda Civic from the 80's is more fun than a 100K silent Tesla P100D Model S..

Good vid, TY. I read a similar article back about 30 years ago about this motor. it was supposedly rated at 700+ hp at between 7 to 10k rpm. As you stated though, one of the biggest problems was the tappet carriers separating. Apparently Chrysler was working on curing the problem. However, along with that Ford was developing the 429 and Chev was working on the 428. The battle for cid + HP was full blown and so Bill France Sr stepped in and said "enough". This definitely would have been something for Chrysler to research and develop, given their past success.

In 1964, I was an Industrial Design student here in Northern California and a big racing fan. As a project, I designed a bolt on head for the small block Chevy that was a 2 valve per cylinder DOHC. It used 396 valves and was a hemi combustion chamber. The intake port came down between the cams. The college that I was going to had a great machine shop and we (it was a project that involved two engineering students too) started to build it. The cams were steel and bored to lube with the outlet on the trailing part of the lobe. It also had two spark plugs per cylinder. Heads were aluminum. When it came time to have the cams ground, I made the mistake of writing the Harvey Crane, who ran with the idea and made the Moser engine. Oh yes, the cam towers were removable. I still have the original drawings.

NASCAR in the 60s lead to major development in the automotive industry. GM lobbied enough to kill off Mopar and Fords dominance and reduced the displacement to 350 cid That's what lead to the downfall of Chrysler in NASCAR and lead to GM dominating the 80s. I want to cry when I see a wing car pic where the CID on the hood is less than 350 CID. Yes kids, the wing cars were so aerodynamic that they could still take a Chevy even if they had a small block. I'm only 2 mins in and heard mention of the GM "Mystery Motor", Ford's 427, the Max Wedge and am wondering if you'll cover the BS that NASCAR pulled to ban the Hemi the first time. The aero package cars (Daytona, Talledega, Cyclone spoiler) were so fast that the major name drivers boycotted races because the tires wouldn't hold up to the speeds they started reaching. GM is the reason for the power loss in the series and it's obvious when you dig into the history of the sport. Mopar was the king of stock car racing in the 60s and Ford was the prince, GM was the Jester that couldn't make anyone laugh.

@John Johnson stage racing killed it for me. It was always about endurance above anything else. Of course when Dale died I was already mostly done with the sport. Yeah, that Chevy "mystery motor" was one bad ass unit. I'm a huge Junior Johnson fan, and I learned a lot about the the cars he raced during that 1 year with this mystery motor. It was something uncommon for Chevy, as it was a big bore/short stroke engine. But he said they always had problems with the valve train. However, they led EVERY race with this motor, and IF the valve train held up for 500 miles, they absolutely put the rest of the field to shame & won the race. He stated if they could've solved the problems, they would've won every race that year. He swore they were getting between 700 and 800 hp out of that motor. That video is here on youtube. It's all an interview with the car by the man himself. The video title is: "Junior Johnson and his 1963 Chevrolet Impala SS"........For any serious car guy, THIS video will give ya goose bumps. Best video about the mystery motor, the car, and what they were accomplishing that year......IF they didn't blow up.

@@ozmister101 Not true. Ford killed the SOHC 427 as Ford chose not to mass produce/offer the engine in any of its automobile platforms (making it available to the public as Chrysler did from 1966-1971 with its legendary Hemi) as NASCAR rules declare that only production engines may be used in NASCAR competition. The "Cammer" engine had many great engineering flaws; hence, Ford chose not to mass produce it and wisely decided to start with a clean sheet design which became the BOSS 429 IMHO.

Toyota had to go back in time and invent their own just to be able to compete in the series back in 2005. The rule still stands today, and is widely believed to be the only reason any new, or foreign manufacturers haven't entered the sport since Toyota.

Great video! Seems like Mopar engineers a solution and begins dominating. The sanctioning body doesn't like it being lopsided. Mopar takes a break. Happened in NASCAR at least twice, and NHRA, most notably Pro Stock. I find it funny that the Hemi still dominates in the NHRA fuel classes, so much that some of the engines say Ford, or whatever, on the valve covers! Ride On Tony!

@@comradeyuri8492 actually Sonny's motors have evolved to have hemi heads on a Chevy block. www.hotrod.com/articles/hot-rod-garage-episode-12-1225-horsepower-engine-711-ci-sonny-leonard-chevy-hemi/ They aren't chrysler- based, so I get your point. The big Chevy based block is cheaper and less fragile. Proline has done something similar, offering hemi heads on their engines.

Not exactly true. In a few years from now you have the beginning of the tribulation as we see the 4 horseman active right now. As also the temple and Babylon are being rebuilt. Also the church stewardship has been restored through Apostle Eric at Second8thWeek During the tribulation I’m sure people may think back on this history. But after the tribulation Gos is cleansing the earth as the battle of Armageddon is completed and the millennium reign with Christ begins. At that time new history is being made.

I wish more of the engineers that worked on some of this stuff would come out and document what they worked on. Because Tony has gone over a bunch of "could have been" engines before, but those are just the ones we know about. There are probably dozens of engines that were built and tested for various forms of racing, that never saw the light of day for one reason or another. And just like the cam timing on this one, it wouldn't surprise me to learn that many of the features we see on an engine today, were developed 50 years ago.

My dad was a Chevy guy, his dad retired from the Leeds plant here on Kansas City. I never forget, one time I was in the shop and he was talking to one of his buddies. He said, "yeah, Chrysler makes damn good horsepower." I was like 10. We'd never owned anything but GM vehicles. A few years after he died I bought a 92 Dakota single cab 318, NOT 4wd. My first truck was dad's 70 C10 with the 350 and the 3 on the tree. That Dakota is probably just as fast and actually accelerates quicker than my Chevy. Man I wish my dad was around for that stuff. He'd hate it 🤣

It wasnt the cam buckets that cracked, it was the cam bucket carriers. That happened while the motor was run without internals by an electric motor to test the valve-train. I believe the cam bucket carriers were cast by Alcoa, they should have been machined from forged billets for more durability. It would have been interesting if the A-925 actually ran as a complete engine.

Chrysler corporation made 2 prototypes of these (DOHC 426c.i. Hemis... one sat up in Michigan at a Chrysler warehouses collecting dust, the other engine sat in the corner of one of my dad’s friend’s garage in upstate Ny. Both were complete engines. When I was 9years old me & my dad went to his buddy’s house to help him clean out his garage & organize it. At a young age- I basically grew up as a mopar but/ mopar gearhead, & so was my dad’s friend. He had two “twins”- identical colors/trim- 1971 Plymouth gtx, & a 1972 Roadrunner, both were dark metallic green/ black interiors; sitting collecting dust in his garage. The car he drove a lot was a 1970 Roadrunner superbird - red, 440 6 pak, 4spd pistol grip, white interior. He had other cars in his collection- but when it came to cleaning & organizing his garage... low & behold what I found buried in the corner on an engine stand- was one of these- Daul Over Head Cams (dohc) 426 Hemis... I asked the dude- “why don’t ya put this in that GTX”, his response was: “cause they don’t make any parts for it”. Me: “it’s a Hemi, they made hundreds of these, what do u mean they don’t make parts for these”.. then his response was: it’s an over head cammed Hemi. It was a prototype engine. & at that time- I learned what prototype meant. Last I knew my dad’s friend up in NY still had that engine. It very well could be the one that showed up at Carlisle PA- during one of those mopar swap meets.
