Moral Panic Over Sex Work

Police often use “sex trafficking” and prostitution interchangeably. That’s what happed in the Robert Kraft case, says reporter Elizabeth Nolan Brown.

Kraft, the owner of the New England Patriots, was caught in a “sex trafficking” sting.
“They [law enforcement] had all of these big announcements at first saying that … these women were being forced there and they weren’t allowed to leave” Brown explains to John Stossel.
But now prosecutors in the Kraft case concede that there was no trafficking.
That’s usually the case when it comes to “sex trafficking” busts says Brown: “I'd say 99% of the headlines are not true.”
Brown covered a similar case in Seattle where the cops claimed to have busted a sex trafficking ring. In a press conference King County Sheriff John Urquhart said, “These women are true victims.”
But the court documents “actually paint a very, very different story” Brown points out. “No one has been charged with human trafficking in that case.”
Yet politicians and the media often exaggerate the frequency of trafficking. Congresswoman Ann Wagner claims, “Right now almost 300,000 American children are at risk”.
That 300,000 number is repeated constantly in the media. The number is based on a study that has been disavowed by the lead author Richard Estes. Brown says, “many people debunked the study and say ‘this is just a total bull crap number’.”
Brown adds, “when we have these exaggerated numbers, it forces people to go into this crazy emergency moral panic mode that ends up not helping the actual problem that we have.”

I love how when they interviewed the prostitutes who admit that they enjoy their "work" the one said both conservatives AND liberals are BOTH wrong. Just leave me alone and let me do my work. In Europe, feminism has succeeded in adapting the "Swedish Model" for prostitution. Keep it illegal but criminalize ONLY the Johns. Women escape all accountability under this model. How it works is the cops can arrest and prosecute any man who agrees to pay for s3x, but the prostitutes selling themselves, that is not illegal. So the prostitutes don't have to worry about being arrested and getting a record. They are immune from prosecution based on their gender. Its very feminist actually. I could see that model being adopted here to keep both liberals and conservatives happy. Really, they only want to go after the Johns (and maybe the pimps) anyway.

If prostitution was legal they would have an easier time cracking down on drugs and the actual slave trade. Business licenses, OSHA, mandatory blood tests, police protection. Prostitutes would no longer be the most sought after drug runner for dealers. They would have legal protection from potential pimps. They could work from secure facilities. Police would be able to immediately run a search to find the business license. If they don't find one they would immediately know it is not a legal operation and something else illegal is also going on.

The only problem I foresee in your idea is...the “Johns”. The ones who are prostituting, that are drug addicts...who are just trying to make enough to buy their next high...are high risk individuals for being victimized or even killed. Majority of these so-called ‘serial killers’, do go after these types of women bc they’re easy targets. They’ll get into a car w anyone for that $20. Then end up dead over some maniacal crazed man that thrives on his “high”. Killing ppl. Psychopathy is a very real deal. Although, I believe a lot of these women are in the trade by choice...many do have pimps that make it hard for them to actually get away by degrading their self worth. They don’t believe they deserve any better. There is sex trafficking, is it an epidemic as they proclaim...idk but like they said...MSM blows a lot outta proportion also. I’d also like to see a true sex trafficked victim, with free, unaccompanied access to a phone where they could DL Ashton’s app to “save them”. 3,000? 🙄 riiiight. Not buying that one. I agree with a lot of what u said, it’s just the other aspect of the trade that makes a lot potential high risk, victims.

Oscar Alvarado society has a need for their work, weather want to admit it or not. Where there is demand, there is supply. Now, we can either choose to ignore it or criminalize it and have sex workers that work and live underground in terrible conditions, or we can accept the fact that this happens and try to minimize the bad attributes such as sex trafficking, STD’s, abuse. Anytime you can shine a light on these situations and make everything more transparent it is better for everyone by prohibiting it you actually make it worse. And if it’s legal, maybe it’s not a shady/seedy lifestyle after all. At the end of the day sex workers are people like you or I and they deserve basic human rights.

I imagine that there is way more sex trafficking than this video suggests. The internet is lousy with stories of women who have been trafficked. However, it's impossible to separate the regular prostitution from trafficking, because both are criminal, both are reported on before people are arraigned, and the fact that we can't seem to blame a woman for anything. They never seem to report on the prostitutes, just the busted customers.

There are some things people are going to do whether it is legal or not. Alcohol prohibition didn't work, and sex trade prohibition doesn't work either. If prostitution were legal it would virtually eliminate any need for black market trafficking. There will always be women willing to trade sex for money, and there will always be men willing to pay for it. Making it legal will generate needed tax money, and allow for regulation to help keep the industry safer.

You can change the entire air of this report. Simply removing the word prostitution. And replacing it with the word politician. Remove trafficking. And replace it with legislating. It was not I who pointed out the similarities between politicians and prostitutes. For that, you need to talk to Mark Twain. Because he hit it Square on the head. The job descriptions are literally the same. And to claim that we have a prostitution problem here in this country. Is to admit that we have a politician problem. Politicians don't like prostitutes because, they hate the competition.

Growing up in Nevada - I knew about the choices many made to be a sex worker. What I think I would like to know is honest static’s. I know from experience that young children are sexually molested. Now, that was due to a neighbor and I was afraid to tell at the time. Then in later years when involved in therapy - meeting persons who were abused by adults and shared. Having said that - I have never known the stats about these types of events. I accept a persons right to sell sex to another by choice, maybe because it is regulated or was in NV but I also know there are abuses of some kind and I would like to know the truth of that too? Any ideas of how that can be identified?

That's my problem. It's one thing if it's adults, but we see too many times underage girls being used. We know that it's happening on the border. Also drug addicts who are underage do this. The problem is we don't seem to have anyone to investigate this or other issues without bias. We always get a side pushing for something. I watched a video by a former prostitute. It was really sad. She had been raped by her step father, turned to a life of drugs & was pimped out. After hearing her story, I think we really need to look closely at what is going on. Best wishes
