Do you have the right to rent your body to someone else?
In most of America, you don't. But prostitution is legal in parts of Nevada.
Julie Bindel, author of the book The Pimping of Prostitution, wants that to change. She co-founded "Justice for Women", a group that fights to end all prostitution. Bindel tells John Stossel, "I've interviewed a lot of sex buyers, and they talk about women like they're human toilets or spittoons for men's semen."
Does that mean it should be illegal?
No, says Christina Parreira, a PHD student at the University of Nevada who studies legal prostitution. She became a prostitute herself to gain access to the legal brothels and interview women there. She argues, "we don't need protection, we're consenting adult women. [Groups like Bindel's] say that it's oppression against women and we're being exploited. But I feel more exploited by these supposedly liberal women that are telling me that I'm being exploited."
John Stossel confronts Bindel, Parreira, and Dennis Hof, owner of 7 legal brothels in Nevada.
Produced by Naomi Brockwell. Edited by Joshua Swain.

I don't necessarily condone prostitution, but Stossel used the expression "renting out" your body. That got me thinking outside of my usual viewpoint. So what's the difference between a prostitute and a surrogate mother? Both basically "rent out" their bodies. And I never thought it until I watched this, but everyone who works for anyone but themselves, rents out their body, ie gets paid for what they do with their body. That's what I like about Stossel. He makes you think about things from a different point of view. And isn't obnoxious while doing it.
@BrianCave

Smedleydog1 exactly right on the thinking part and exactly why I like Stossel! People need to stop retreating to their comfort zones before even thinking about another point of view. It’s a morality issue and you can’t legislate morality, has never worked well if at all. They are more likely to be forced into stuff on the illegal side than the legal side due to polar opposite business structures. Now that does not mean I would be anything less than horrified if my daughter did this but it’s supposed to be a free country from the legal side. But you can’t argue against the choice of prostitution and for abortion choice at the same time, that is purely illogical.

I worked as a mover for 2 years, I'm 6'6"/300lbs, I made good money renting out my body to lift and move really heavy stuff, and honestly, I think my body endured much more damage as a mover, than any prostitute damaged their body by having sex. All physical labor jobs are essentially renting out a body, prostitution should be no different

it's the basic moral undertones of society, taken too far. A healthy society shouldn't need to criminalize sex&money, or natural medicines ('drugs'), or other 'crimes' that have no victim. But meanwhile somehow a woman killing an unwanted child is legal up until birth. Go figure. Society has a long way to go imo.

Do you think rapist maybe legal prostitute buyer if they had that choice for the most part. everyone is born to have sex. even if they do not want children there body still needs sex . you have a biological makeup that forces you to seek it. rats that are segregated without sex die earlier. women and men are designed perfectly to release and enjoy it. do to no way to get sex boys are doing it with each other and thinking that means there gay but id say they need sex and have nowhere to get it. does not mean they want to get married. but society has told them it does.

"Who owns your body?" As a man I can be conscripted at any time and sent to die in a war, so the government owns my body. As for prostitution, it is only illegal for a woman to rent out her body for CASH. She can rent it out for dinner, jewelry, a weekend trip, housing, etc. and it's fine. The issue is that the cash transaction can't be obfuscated to protect women's illusory virtue.

That's the one time I see him argue for more government power. He seems like a guy that's willing to budge if it makes economic sense to him. We need to be able to distinguish between well regulated prostitution and street walkers. It's like comparing street dealers with legal dispensaries. Julie Binbag probably only looks at the street hookers and not the well regulated alternatives. That's were you find the really grimey clients.

You ever wondered why there aren't many male prostitutes? Here's an experiment, Show a guy a moderately hot girl and show a girl a moderately hot guy. Ask both of them whether they were aroused. Chances are the guy would've said yes whereas the girl would've probably said no. Males have higher sex drives than their female counterparts and that's the same reason why male prostitutes are few in number

True but just like how the war on drugs was just a war on a certain minority community, they know that they can virtue signal and keep their privilege by keeping the world’s oldest profession illegal, because they know exactly who and how any law would be applied, particularly the Nordic model. The Christian in me sees the morality issue of extra marital sex. The constitutionalist in me says that the only women screaming about being degrading are women who can barely give it away much less have someone pay for theirs! I do believe it is a moral issue and for some there is no issue. I would rather people be protected by the rules of clean and safe sex work as opposed to being on a street corner strung out on drugs at the mercy of chance and fate!

kamurray67 As a Christian and a Libertarian, I understand the ethical dilemma but the fact of the matter is that prohibition doesn't prevent people from seeking out prostitutes. If you make it legal you can prevent the spread of disease and at least quarantine the behavior to red-light districts away from children's schools and places of worship. Same issue with drug prohibition. People will use drugs regardless of what law is passed. All of these behaviors can be taxed with a "vice tax" to support subsidies for proactive things like handing out clean needles. It worked in countries like Portugal, it can work in the USA

Theonomic Christian here. According to the Pentateuch in my understanding, while fornication may be a sin, as is drunkenness or lying, the state has no authority to bring charges. Outside of marriage, restitution for fornication must be paid to the father if at all. Fathers, as covenental heads of their daughters until marriage, may decide that his daughter marry a man whom she has had conjugal relations with, or not. Daughters, proceed at your own risk, don't sin, don't violate your conscience, but should you be charged? God says no. Ultimately, if a father doesn't care about his daughter having extra-marital sex and pocketing the money due to her father, what can anyone do about it in a civil context? Exodus 22:16-17. Theonomy not autonomy.

Not true. Trafficking is often HIGHER in places where prostitution is legal. And do you honestly think the black market will disappear? Wake up. The black market will stay the same. Criminals and pimps will still victimize and prostitute people. They aren't going to give up, or decrease their amount. Legalization will only act as a shield for the black market, where people can simply be convinced, brainwashed, or forced into saying that everything is consenting. In 2000, the Netherlands, historically one of the most lax countries on prostitution, formalized its prostitution policy by lifting its ban on brothels. Advocates felt that regulating brothels would provide better protection to vulnerable women, particularly migrant trafficking victims. Instead, licensed brothels became a magnet for human trafficking. In 2008, Job Cohen, Mayor of Amsterdam, said, “We’ve realized this is no longer about small-scale entrepreneurs, but that big crime organizations are involved here in trafficking women, drugs, killings and other criminal activities.” Amsterdam has a reputation as an open-minded city. Amsterdam’s regulated sex industry was attracting a criminal element that was beyond the regular black market sex industry. You don't get rid of victims. The victims increase... but the percentage of victims goes down since there are more sex workers and therefore more consenting and un-victimized sex workers. So it only makes the issue worse, by putting forth an air of safety and legitimacy. You only open NEW OPPORTUNITIES for criminals and corrupt organizations. Instead of low level pimps, you now also get large crime syndicates, corrupt business people, and corrupt police and government getting in on the action, because they can make it all look "legal". This issue is WAY different than prohibition of alcohol or pot. When you make HUMANS into commodities then VICTIMIZATION ABOUNDS. It doesn't matter if you are selling yourself or not... humans as commodities is precedent for all kinds of harm, decay, dehumanization, and victimization. So please don't compare this to prohibition.

I think we should be able to sell our organs. People wait years (in misery) for kidneys, and people die with failed livers, hearts, and lungs. Let people (or more specifically, their heirs) sell their organs and there will be a glut on the market, leading to higher quality and lower prices. There's no reason any voluntary transaction should be restricted. It may be immoral to some, but that doesn't make unethical, and the economy is based in ethics not morals. The real absurdity with prostitution is where the line is drawn. It's okay for someone to provide a sensual massage to another individual, as long as they don't touch them in certain places. I would like to see how the anti-prostitution woman in the video would explain that giving a man a hand job is degrading to a woman.

Really? In what world? There's a black market for everything. Their's a black market for kids toys, iPhones, purses, entertainment. Legalizing does not get rid of the black market, and it doesn't make criminals decide to give up and get a job. And it would not help the economy... it would cause an increase in school drop outs and adultery and divorce and broken homes and hedonistic liberals and abortion rates and there would still be a prostitution black market. It's a lose lose. Unless you are a bimbo with no talent who wants money and sex, but no commitment to a man, or if you are a sex-perv or unsexed and want sex without the hassle of courting. Easy access to sex ruins society... society is largely set up around being good to attract mates, and staying committed to raise kids properly. Eliminating that leads to moral and social decline.

MethylpheniDAVE prostitution is legal and regulated in numerous places in Europe, all of which prove every one of your claims incorrect. Take Germany for example. Divorce in Germany is higher than the EU average... they also have a very lackadaisical view of commitment and marriage. www.thelocal.de/20110428/34693 I don't know much about the German education system. You can't argue that Germany is unaffected by casual sex culture because it's rate is "normal". Because too many other factors are at play. I bet drop outs would go down if prostitution were stigmatized and commitment was encouraged though. Actually, infidelity is highest in Germany and Italy among european countries. And it is extremely high in Thailand... you know about prostitution in Thailand right? Adultery doesn't even have legal ramifications in Germany. If you get cuckolded in Germany, you have to pay child support for your wife's bastard baby. Adultery is not grounds for divorce in Germany... but I guess it doesn't need to be, since divorce is easy... but it does mean that cheating on your wife doesn't lose you any points in the divorce settlement. Germany was a bad example dude.

And to clarify for you and any other moron from your home of Moronville, I am saying that these women made a bad choice because they could be such better women had they not chose to be hookers and their creator is going to judge them accordingly. You have a wonderful night and tell the rest of your moronic buddies to quit selling themselves for paper. Damn dumbass...

According to the joke, a fellow walked into a bar and saw a woman wearing the tightest pants he'd ever seen on a woman. He wondered how she managed to put her pants on. After awhile, his curiosity overcame him and he got up the courage to go over and ask her. "Excuse me, but how do you get into those pants?" She replied "Well, you could start by buying me a drink."

Prostitution isn't illegal. It's called dating. The vast majority of relationships involve money flowing from the man to the woman in the form of gifts and dates. The only difference is, the woman isn't obligated to provide sex in return. In other words, it's only illegal to trade money for sex if the woman has to honor her end of the bargain. How absurd.

The pron industry is perfectly legal. Some of the producers and directors who are paying the women even participate in the films. So, basically, the difference between prostitution and pornography is whether or not you film it. Also, it's legal to have sex with someone if they buy you dinner and some shoes, but if they hand the cash to you it's illegal. It's stupid. People only oppose prostitution because it's been stigmatized, not because it's any different than what half the women out there do without the label of "prostitution".

There is a big difference between legal brothels in Nevada and prostitutions outside the legal brothels. The former is well regulated by Nevada Counties. In Las Vegas, for example, prostitution is illegal and unregulated. So you have agencies, pimps, drugs, trafficking and the like. There are casino girls, street walkers, internet girls, etc. I am not advocating for legalizing prostitution- the whole "industry" is seedy at best. But both sides are presented simplistically. It is much more complex.

You can't legalize prostitution! That would reduce the amount of people thrown into the pit of the Prison Industrial Complex. Also, imagine all the money lost by lawyers and fine collectors. And then there is that whole freedom issue. Can't have any of that in Umerika.

I have worked as a legal pimp. I get a small percentage of their pay. In exchanged for them to use my rooms and for my protection if things go south and top pick the Johns that they want and I have to keep my cut low because if I increased my cut of their pay I lose girl who don’t want me to give them the benefits that I do give them. But when I was illegal a lot of the pimps would take a massive amount of the girls pay and force them to go with Johns they weren’t happy to go with because they seen the girls as less than human. I would see my girls as human who were paying me for what I could do for them and not want they could do for me.

I think it will be okay legalizing prostitution but only on very strict terms that will fully care for the safety of it's workers, it's obvious the reasons behind making it illegal and the danger is when the customer or even worse the pimp abuses his workers.

I can't tell you how many prostitutes I've known (I lived in a bad city, long story) that have been beaten, raped, roped, gang raped, etc. etc. etc. and did not and would not call the police. Same with drug addicts, I've known many addicts that were raped and almost none went to the police, and the ones that did were completely disbelieved simply because they LOOKED like drug addicts, it didn't matter how much evidence they had. One was raped twice in one day, and another time 2 different people in one day attempted to rape her... she was not believed by the police either time because that sounds outlandish, but in that world, it happens. But these people are all terrified of the police because they don't want to be arrested themselves or treated like dirt, which is inevitably what happens to all of them. And sure, none of the girls I knew that did that actually ENJOYED it, they hated it, especially after they got off the drugs and were no longer desperate enough to do it, they were disgusted by it. But that's no excuse for it being illegal. They should have the right to make self-destructive choices if they want to. Everyone should have that right. Also, remember, these leftists saying women don't have the right to sell their body, are the same leftists saying that killing a baby IN your body is your right because it's "your body." They only want you to have freedom and autonomy when it benefits them.

“Most prostitutes hate it and they’re in terrible conditions and they can’t leave”. Omg, duh. 🙄 that’s a side effect of it being illegal. The demand is still there and so the market goes into the underground criminal regime. Just like marijuana, when it’s legal you walk into a corner shop and buy it like it were cigarettes at a Walgreens or CVS; you don’t think twice and everything is peachy. But when it’s illegal you have to risk interacting with people willing to commit crimes and be involved in the underground criminal regime to get you that marijuana, a lot of those people in the life cycle of a kilo of marijuana tend to be violent criminals if need be. Make it legal and you no longer force people to risk interacting with criminals; it’s all above board and regulated. Simple enough to me.

Prostitution is immoral because It goes against tradition and the family, a prostitute with the attitude of one will never make a good mom/wife. Does it eliminate you from that possible life, no not at all. But Openly accepting sex as a man or woman lowers the ability to stay loyal to a partner. Do I think it should be legal, yes, it would make the industry 100x safer for both parties involved.

Theonomic Christian here. According to the Pentateuch in my understanding, while fornication may be a sin, as is drunkenness or lying, there is no civil penalty for it. Outside of marriage, there is no restitution due to any earthly person. Fathers, on the other hand, as covenental heads of their daughters until marriage, may decide that his daughter marry a man whom she has had conjugal relations with, or not. So ultimately, proceed at your own risk, don't sin, don't violate your conscience, but should you be charged? God says no. Exodus 22:16-17
