Now that the chimney is gone we have to patch the hole. As usual one thing leads to another and this project gets bigger than expected. Still, one step closer and it's looking good.

mom said "just don't open the door. this will not end well." My dad opened the door to the small enclosed closet next to the water heater as there were pipes leading into and back out of this 2-foot door. the room was as small as the door in depth and width. several rusted pipes entered and exited the room. the wood rot was extensive not allowing a door to be rehung. Dad did a lot of the work which included several adjoining rooms. It took over a year and cost approximately $10,000 in the '80s. every time he winced or complained mom said: "I told you not to open the door." lol

Oh, guys, I feel your pain. I spent my first 45 years living in an old 1850's era house, complete with square nails and horse hair plaster. It was a perpetual fixer upper. Every project started turned into two or three more before it was finished. On the positive, I acquired quite a repertoire of DIY skills thanks to that old house. When you can't afford to call someone, you learn to do it yourself. I can repair plumbing and plaster, build a deck, and replace doors and windows. Not bad for a girl. I'm a renter now. But I still miss "fixing stuff." I love your fixer-upper videos. It's the next best thing to doing it myself. Great work, you two!

When you install the drip edge, be sure not to push it up against the facia board tight, there should be a gap (I can see a small gap, but technically it should be about the thickness of your finger away from the facia board. Try to match the distance away from the facia board that the current drip edge that's currently there is. The drip edge is bent out so that water will wick away from the house, and if it's against the board, it'll wick under and will be contacting the facia board, and can (through capillary action) soak up into the facia board (rotting it out), and get the roof covered ASAP! Also, if you're not going to cap it with new aluminum, you can always paint, but be sure to get all that done ASAP.

That was a speckled king snake (not poisonous) and good because they eat poisonous snakes and rodents. I save the ones I find and rehome them back into our forested area on our property to keep the chickens from playing tug 'o war with them and eating them. Great job on the house and I love seeing the progress. It reminds me of my husband and I and our great big remodeling jobs we take on constantly. I'm looking forward to your next video! Be safe out there!

It's going to be a whole new house! So essentially Doug you are a better builder than the roofing contractor. This brings back so many memories of my husband and I building our first house, now we're working on our last. We used to give each other that side of the eye look like, 'are you kidding me, climb up there?!' Ug, it was way more work back when we did it all ourselves,, but we were younger and less arthritic! We're still doing 80% of the work ourselves, just not the stuff we hate. Any type of construction is labor intensive, and you guys have added work of 'demo and discovery' with renovation! Ashley, you crack me up,..."bye". ;)

That rot under the door is due to the deck being at the same height as the door. Rain hitting the deck floods that area. Snow laying on the deck saturates the rotten area. Now some people like their deck to be the same height as the door, until the wood rots or they get 6 inches of snow and can't open the door. The others desire a single step down - no rain flooding, no saturation, etc. Decking is another area to consider. Today, a lot of people will use the 5/4 pressure treated decking boards and maybe some sort of protection - either staining or waterproofing. History shows that these do not last that long. Back in the day, people covered their decks and porches in pressure treated 2 bys and PAINTED them with porch paint. True every few years you had to repaint them - but - some of these are now over 100 years old

I agree with Ashley! Its gotta go! It looks so much better without the scraggly plants. 😀 I know the curb appeal of planting against the house is nice. But I have seen so much damage to siding cause by the bugs, rodents, and small birds that live in the shrubs and small trees that are popular for flower beds. And I have seen cracked sidewalks and foundations from trees planted to close. You probably dont have to worry about this where you are, but shrubs planted close to the house are also a good place for burglars/peeping toms to hide.

You are doing the work like people who plan to live there, not just doing a quick patch and go job. I think the chimney was a tacked on afterthought with the rafters just cut off and the weather proofing left for another day that never came. It already looks so much better after your work to true it up, I hope you will get it weather proofed before too much rain attacks. You two really have the look of people investing in your future. Stick with it and may the weather gods smile on your work. I am really looking forward to seeing the new front installed.
