Just wanted to drop a comment and say that I received the teeshirt I ordered and it looks and fits great. Love your videos and have gained a lot of helpful knowledge from watching them. Been watching for several years. I’ve got an ‘83 FXDG (Ol’ Black Betty) that I love tinkering with and maintaining. I also have a ‘13 Ultra Classic CVO for road trips. Bought the CVO new on 9/11 2012 and it just rolled over 77K miles and still running strong. Don’t know which I do most on the Shovelhead, tinker or maintain but I enjoy doing both. I’m 3/4 of a century old and am blessed by the good Lord to have good health and can still get out on my scoots and ride both locally and take a road trip usually each summer to places around the western USA. Road to Milwaukee for the 105th and 110th Anniversaries. That museum is something to see as well as the old shed and production plant. Keep on presenting the great videos that you do. Looking forward to seeing the flathead project completed and hearing it make that awesome HD sound. Have a great day, Lars.

I would be really interested in how all these parts come together. I watched the series, where you show us how to disassemble/assemble the shovelhead motor and whenever I have to work on my shovel I check them out again just to freshen things up. Your videos about the big flathead really sparked my interest in flatheads in general and I know I want to get one sometime in the future, idealy an U/UL like you. So yeah I hope you show as much of this motor as you feel comfortable doing, because I know building a motor is a ton of work and showing the internet how to do things in the process triples the amount of effort. Thank you for your videos mike

I love the commonality in design with and parts pans, shovels and I see now even flatheads. Just about finished restoring a '68 shovel, and it shares a lot of parts with my pan. Some parts even end in -36 or thereabouts. But you have to be careful, because there were a LOT of subtle changes over the years.
@pacificmike95012 жыл бұрын
One thing that helps is noticing the revision letter at the end of the parts that have been revised after the year indicated at the end of the part number. At least you know something has been modified.

It is a 1979 80ci. You have a good memory! I was wondering if I could get your opinion on something. The connecting rods feels/sounds pretty tight so I'm going with it as is for a few more riding seasons (Seattle). Would it be a good idea to do the top end with low comp (7.5:1) pistons to save a little wear and tear on the bottom end? Mainly looking for reliability....not a fire breather

It's gonna be a while. First we get the motor done. Trans is done, been in a box all finished for about thirty years. Chassis is not quite finished. Motor goes in so all bracketry and sheet metal can be modified and fitted along with my seat ideas (this thing has to be comfortable for this old guy to travel on). But it's going to be my idea of "cool."

I think another thing to add is make sure you know what year ALL the different parts of your bike is.....because these days there are a lot of bikes put together with different year stuff
@pacificmike95012 жыл бұрын
It's always been that way. You find a frame. You buy a motor. You've always wanted a certain type front end. That's what custom bikes are all about. Yes, it gets difficult sometimes. Sometimes it takes hard work and research. The idea is to build the custom of your dreams. And then there are the guys who want to do a proper restoration. A lot of work there. And a lot of skill. But, it's always been that way.

Loved the video, I'm enjoying this project. I do have a question for you though, I have a 1979 FXEF (dressed like an FLH). It's an 80 cubic inch. I have has the bike fir about 4 years and every time I work on it I find the craziest stuff. Today I pulled the the bike down to a rolling chassis and will go clear to a bare frame and go up from there to fix things right. On that note, I discovered that the heads are mismatched. The rear cylinder head has the "O-Ring" type intake port, while the front has the "Rubber Band" style intake port. The manifold is the rubber band style. I'm going to replace the worn out carb with an S&S Super "E", so I'll be ordering a new intake for it. The guys say I can run it as is, no biggie but I just want to make sure that I do not need to try an replace the rear head with a matching one to the front. So, can I run it as it has been, or should a get a new rear head? Thanks in advance
@pacificmike95012 жыл бұрын
Okay. Good question. Personally, I always prefer O-Rings rather than rubber band types. Running it the way it is, if it's all sealed up well, is fine. When you're mating an O-Ring to a rubber band, one side still has a groove which must be filled. Rivera Engineering made hard plastic rings for just such a situation. Call Ben Kudon at American Prime Manufacturing (562)-889-8665.

Mike from your knowledge and experience what was the life span of a new big twin side valve engine off the show room floor ?
@pacificmike95012 жыл бұрын
That's the beauty of old machinery. It's built to rebuild forever. They didn't believe in disposable machinery yet. Ever notice how modern stuff has no grease fittings? How long between rebuilds? That depends on the rider.

@pacificmike95012 жыл бұрын
The Late, Great, Mr. Clell Richards (House of Horsepower and many other great accomplishments) did those tapers for me many years ago. The diameters of those wheels is probably for an EL Knuckle I had back then. Not quite sure what I'm going to do with them yet. But, I'll keep you in mind.
@everettcalhoun81972 жыл бұрын
@@pacificmike9501 Of course they are the same diameter because they are interchangeable. No taper issues, no diameter issues they drop right in. Piston to piston clearance is another issue and clearance of the rod nuts need to be addressed. but just by your response you are emotionally attached to these wheels so I will move on. Thank you and Ilove who you are.
