I've never liked depth of field in games. It actually makes things feel less realistic because my eyes already have a depth of field when looking at a game, I already focus on some parts more than others and other parts are paid less attention. To have the screen do that for me feels wierd to me.
@billnklp
@billnklp 8 жыл бұрын
+OneOnOne1162 im pretty sure your eyes cant produce depth of field on 2D images such as a screen. All parts of the screen are at the same distance from your eyes so focusing anywhere on the screen means your eyes are focused on the whole monitor.
@Alpha1200
@Alpha1200 8 жыл бұрын
bill nklp Actually depth perception is produced in more than 1 way. There's two ways of binocular depth perception: The distance from both images from the eyes compared (and their difference) and the amount your eyes have to turn inwards to see an object clearly. Then there's also several ways of monocular depth perception which includes but is not limited to seeing things with higher spatial resolution (more stuff in the same area) as farther away, automatically compensating for linear perspectives (meaning that things at the end of two lines that slowly converge are seen as farther away), there's also movement parallax (which means that objects that move more slowly through your field of vision are seen as farther away and those that move faster through it as closer by) and several other things. The non-clarity of things is not produced by any of these things but is produced by information fallling on something called the "fovea" which is a small focal point in your eyes which has a dense concentration of cones (the stuff we use to see clearly and in colour), which still in fact works when looking at something specific on a monitor (and even when reading), so you see that's bullshit. There's still depth perception when looking at a game. PS: You said this to the wrong guy, because I'm a psychology student and I'm currently studying for an exam with a chapter about perception (including depth perception).

+OneOnOne1162 let's just say it was made as a compensation or an illusion to cover up for the pc's limitation in rendering... if everything will be rendered in 3d for as far as you can see, it would be more likely that there will be a huge performance drop. take elder scrolls oblivion for example... when you look into the horizon, the landscape is just a blurry low-res 2d wall but as you go closer to it, it's slowly rendered into 3d as you walk/run towards it. and that ps3-quality game is highly playable on pentium 4 3GHz

Abdul Jakul Kalaki Sal-Salini That's not the reason that was given here though. But yeah, that is a thing. A thing VR may be using in the near future, I've heard. Eye-tracking and all.

+OneOnOne1162 I was just about to write this exact comment. Some games do DoF horribly aswell, like FPS games putting the gun in focus when you aim down sight, Why would you focus your eyes on the gun if you're aiming at something further away? And some games have way to much DoF on distant objects instead of having it on things that are not in the centre of the screen, and it's jsut as bad when they have it the other way around and make everything except what your crosshair is on, blurry. I've seen some games that does DoF really well but it is rare.

Depth of Field is one of those settings I always turn off. It looks pretty great in screen shots but I always find it gets in the way when actually playing. As I'm not always looking at what is centered, or what my character happens to be focusing on at the time.

Yes DOF is terrible. You spend all this money on a rig, then update it so you can run it with HD textures. Then you upgrade it more so it can run DOF on top of that which really just blurs those textures out. That is hypocritical. Also your eyes don't really act like that, you aren't always keeping your eyes in one place. Your eyes are spending as much time looking at the background as what is in front of your face. When you look at far objects the distant objects should crisp up and closer objects blur. DOF is a bad hack. Maybe in the future games will be able to track our eyes and tell where we are looking. This guy has it on in force in all of his videos though.

It has been reported that some victims of torture, during the act, would retreat into a fantasy world from which they could not WAKE UP. In this catatonic state, the victim lived in a world just like their normal one, except they weren’t being tortured. The only way that they realized they needed to WAKE UP was a note they found in their fantasy world. It would tell them about their condition, and tell them to WAKE UP. Even then, it would often take months until they were ready to discard their fantasy world and PLEASE WAKE UP.

POV (for games) is how you are you are seeing the characters actions. Its like when people say First Person or Third Person View/game. First person (when you are looking through the eyes of the played character) - Bioshock,CoD, Portal Third (zoomed out, usually behind the character) - Zelda,Uncharted, Gears of War Then there are the ones that can do both like Fallout, Elder Scrolls (some like skyrim), Star Wars Battlefront 2.

anisotropic filter is not about blurring the texture. it's about re-sampling the smaller textures in different direction as opposed to mipmapping (or isotropic filtering) where the textures are shrunken in both x and y dimensions. The size of a pixel in the x and the y dimension on a texture are not the same when you look at it at an oblique angle. Therefore, you need to prepare them in one dimension at a time.

Even with the KZbin compression I saw the line of blurrying inching back as you walked around the scene in Bioshock Infinite. I've heard people say that 8x is the max for AF that you'd want, 16x adding in artifacting, tho I've never seen images showing this off. And yeah, you should definitely do a third episode. I recommend looking at Arma 3/2 for post processing stuff because they go insane with it. And I still don't know how to run that game well.

I also like to add to the FOV, when you do increase FOV (let say 110) it will give a a tunnel or fish eye look when moving around, which is great if you have two or more monitor. (maybe you should do part 3 and add amd eye infinity & nivida 3d surround in the mix, hint* hint*), but throws your balance off when trying to find distant target near the corner on a single monitor.
