@@mikek5298 The same projectile technology that brought 9mm back into the mainstream also applies to .40. And the velocity loss/gain from different .40 barrel lengths seems to not differ all that much compared to other calibers . Also “Budget” .40 JHP’s tend to work in compact/sub .40s.

As I said before, it's all the "tacti-cool" people of the internet that seemed to convince the masses that 9mm was the end-all & be-all of bullet selection for handguns. In short; most gun newbies knew enough that the bigger calibers packed more oomph, so when the guntubers start preaching just how great 9mm had now become, this new info was seen as a revelation (the new hotness) and everything thing else was "Fudd territory". 40 cal, which was a slightly toned down version of the FBI's overcompensation to a certain shootout that didn't go very well for the LEOs, never lost its advantage over the 9mm,,,,,,,,,,,, but whatever, other people's misconception helped keep me stocked up during the ammo shortage during the great cough of 2020😎

The takeaway was that MOST 10MM will not cycle or do it's job when needed in many tools. I was very late commenting, but metioned your channel to let people know about how you do things and tell it like it is. I wish I got to the video sooner for more views, but due to today being Veterans day, I took a long road trip to the National Cemetary in Salisbury N.C. to see my Father, and the rich history that dates back to the late 1700's. @sj6404 Жыл бұрын
Not sure why its not compelling now - the slug goes 17 1/4" - it that was just a hollow point we would all be rejoicing. The 7 1/2" fragmentation is a huge bonus. If you get a square chest shot, you're going to get heart and spine in the same shot unless the target is some huge fella.
@timrobinson6573 Жыл бұрын
The slug is only 50 grains. If it hits bone or almost anything harder than gel then its penetration depth would not be as deep. Gel is not the human body, 7 1/2 inches in GEL is a bad flesh wound. As for your comment about a square chest shot, that's a best case scenario. Choosing your ammo based on a best case scenario is foolish. You choose your ammo based on the worst case. Everything about your comment is fantasy or made up stuff in your mind. Having real world experience is crucial to compare against gel test results. It was definitely cheap when I saw it at the local sporting goods store. When I looked it up just now it's seemingly becoming a bit more expensive. Still cheap compared to other "self defense" ammo. It was almost like the store I went to was marketing it as target ammunition actually. They had winchester white box and blazer all right there with the sinterfire. Meanwhile, gold dot, Hornaday, fort Scott etc etc, were neatly stacked a foot or 2 away. I had no idea they were frangeable either. Until this video.

Are we excited for some arithmetic? Good! The .40 S&W ammo is averaging 1,061 feet per second at 50 yards, giving us an average kinetic energy of 312 energy foot pounds at 50 yards. That's not bad. But how did the 10mm do? Well, as we all know, the design specification for 10mm calls for a 200-grain bullet to have a striking velocity of at least 1,000 feet per second at 50 meters. That gives a 50-meter striking energy (Ke50) of 444 energy foot pounds, which is the number we need to know in order to figure out if ammo loaded with something other than a 200-grain bullet meets the requirements to actually be 10mm instead of just .40 S&W Long. And in short, this stuff didn't do that. The "10mm" ammo averaged 1,161 feet per second at 50 yards, which sounds great until we remember that we're using a 125-grain bullet. And when we do the math on the Ke50 of this ammo, it's giving us a whopping 374 energy foot pounds. That falls well short of our minimum requirement of 444 energy foot pounds. In order to meet the minimum requirement, every shot would have to have a V50 of at least 1,265 feet per second. And we're well short of that. That said, the projectiles performed as intended, and the main core did get pretty good penetration. It's just not REAL 10mm ammo. Thanks for the test, Tools!

The 10mm actually looked very interesting. Penetration was good, fragments went well off the main channel and penetrated to a reasonable depth. Pull a bullet..these projectiles likely take up quite a bit of case capacity…close to 200fps faster is generally what can be expected of 10mm vs .40. These may have some actual scenario use where the terminal effect might be advantageous…especially the 10mm. I would be curious to see how the core holds together on bone…that would be my biggest concern…otherwise this seems like a potential option for a fragmenting bullet.

How about 45 long colt......then 22 mag...PMR 30....????
@ToolsandTargets Жыл бұрын
I do have a few different .45 Colt rounds I need to test. I wanna get a dedicated .45 Colt handgun instead of just using stuff that's multi cal capable.

Intriguing ammo. What we need now is to see reports of it's performance in actual shootings. In the past, high speed, lightweight bullets always sounded good, but real life performance showed sketchy results. The 90gr 9mm Super Vel was one of the first to disappoint. These things with that explosive fragmentation than occurs pretty close to heart/lung depth could be a big deal. It would definitely render any limb useless with that grenade spread. A ballistic gel dummy with all the correct parts and pieces might give more insight.

After seeing this I'd love to see these rounds through about 1/4" of mdf to simulate bone. At first impression it looks nasty in gel like G9 RIP but my concern would be you pop an attacker in the chest and all those little fragments just get stuck in his chest instead of passing through the sternum area were almost any other round would pass through 100% Unless someone can prove it I'm thinking these ultra fragmenting rounds are ultimately just a modern day blunderbuss 🎉

125 should be 13-1400 in 40 and 15-1600 in 10mm if not more

Agreed.

In the somewhat limited service role this ammo was designed to fulfill such as courtroom security or any situation where the population density is extremely high and collateral damage as a result of discharging a weapon is extremely high even if you make the perfect shot and hit the bad guy but most conventional ammo could possibly carry some force thru that bad guy into someone standing inches away this ammo is good. But for all other purposes it falls short. I think this ammo would be great for anyone working with the TSA or anyone carrying in non-permissive environment assuming your the rare exception to the rule or possibly not.

C'Mon Man! I need the 10mm rant again this week. It never gets old from you, Tools. Love it 😅 That said, considering the Obesity epidemic, I have my doubts that these rounds would work in the real world if the main energy dump is all in fat and not reaching vitals. I suppose it might be enough to break cover and run to safety, but that can never be guaranteed.

Never? Never?..... On the obesity epidemic, you ain't lying there. Of course 14" inches on the .40 core isn't anything to sneeze at either. Personally I'd take the penetration showing of the 10 mil over the .40 if given a choice but seeing as I don't use 10mm., I'd likely stay with a deeper penetrating .40 load than these. That said though, Stay Puff Marshmallow kicks in the door at 2am. on a cookie raid? I wouldn't exactly feel like I was working against a deficit with these in .40 either. A double tap using these? Even on Waddling Whales in pursuit of nefarious undertakings, I'm thinking it would be like a fully fueled cargo jet undergoing a load shift in the first few seconds of liftoff.

I guess it would be good for an upclose Self Defense scenario in an apartment/ house where over penetration factors in ut not a fan. It would make a bloody mess !

I still think you should test some 10mm hunting rounds. This weak 10mm stuff is just not 10mm. Just makes me rethink the .40
