Glad you posted this. I’ve been thinking of listing a few things, but am unlikely to now. A few years ago I sold a guitar on Reverb and had a bad experience. The buyer was an ass in his communication and wanted me to refund money so he could get a setup because the action was too high for him. I asked Reverb a few questions as to their policies. They never answered ANY of my questions and instead took care of the buyer. I pressed seeking answers if this was something I should take into consideration when pricing and they refused to answer. Every time, I’d get a non answer from a different customer support person. eBay isn’t much better, but I’ve sold there enough to at least be aware of the bullshit I’ll deal with and they answer questions. These are great platforms for buyers, but not sellers.

Over the summer I sold a Gibson Firebird that was super clean to a guy in California. I live in New England so the shipping to the other side of the country such a large guitar cost a fortune. At the time I had a 14 day return policy & of course on day 13 the guy writes to me that the guitar is beautiful but he's not feeling it & wants to return it. So I contacted Reverb with a phone number that customer service used to answer back in the day & found it no longer connects to a human. So I had to use their chat service to find out that not feeling it after 2 weeks was a legitimate reason to return the guitar. The buyer had to pay to ship it back to me & I would be out of pocket the money it cost to ship to him!! I was f-ing livid! I'm not Guitar Center losing over $100 because some guy couldn't feel my Firebird hurts me financially. I rasied holy hell with Reverb about this & because I would not go away they gave me the shipping money back as a credit. I got the guitar back & before I reposted it I changed my Reverb default return policy & the guitar sold a couple days later & thankfully got a better price for it & a closer state to ship it to. After 1 day the buyer wrote me to thank me & regale me on how much he loved the guitar. I was lucky this time but Etsy buying Reverb was disastrous for sellers.

Yeah I set my return to 3 days to prevent people from 'renting' stuff and really never had Reverb let me down but once they sold I have not sold anything there and do not intend to the current setup is not user friendly for sellers at all.

@@I.am_Groot That's exactly what I did 3 days. The guy who bought my bird told me he was in a band which led me to believe he used my guitar for some gigs & wanted to look cool with a beautiful Tobacco Burst Firebird. Once he was done impressing the audience he wanted his 2K back & the shipping he had to pay for was a rental fee.

This situation sucks. It's a love/hate for me. I prefer not to sell on Reverb, but when I gotta get rid of something I know I'll be able to sell it on Reverb even if I get screwed on the after shipping/fees price. I'm testing out Sweetwater's used marketplace right now while they have no fees, but after that their fees are going to be the same as Reverb. I really feel like we need to start some kind of private gear exchange community where we can offload our gear at reasonable prices to each other and to people who are decent.

My experience is that you'll get 50% of Sweetwater's expected selling price if you sell outright to Sweetwater, and 75% if they post it on eBay for you. But they'll do all the work for you, which is often worth it to me, and they're always pleasant to deal with. Don't quote me on that, though, since the policy may have changed since I last sold through Sweetwater.

i sold a gibson 50th anniversary SG on reverb a couple years. ago. It had a repaired headstock, shipped in a hardshell case, packed as per reverbs instructions.. outside of the hardcase was 1" of foam and a cardboard box.. Was definitely well packaged.. guitar arrives with the headstock broken (supposedly). Buyer complains to reverb saying the guitar was "improperly shipped" No big deal i had insurance thru reverb... Well reverb first tried to offer me $100.. Then they offered me 200... I said no i shipped a guitar that was in one working piece, now my guitar is damaged. i need the entire amount of the guitar. because now im left with a damaged piece... The buyer removed the strings for some reason, and threw the bridge back in the case, without securing it, so it bounced around and dented up the top of the guitar on the return back to me.. So now i have a broken headstock guitar with dents in the top, where it was otherwise flawless.... Eventually after really pressing them, i got the full amount for insurance, but they banned me from ever buying or selling on reverb again.

You have some good points there Robert. For one, email and other digital communication is the worst form of communication I can think of for conflict resolution for a host of reasons. One also must consider that statistically speaking there is always going to be a percentage of sociopathic predators and people that have a host of other neurosis. I've learned to tell myself when I am encountering them that these are the facts, they are out there, and this is one of them. These last few years seem to have brought out the worst in people as they allow fear to rule their emotional state. So while I've had several successful purchases and sales on Reverb I've been procrastinating/avoiding selling gear because of the uptick in jerky buyers out there. One very entitled buyer I dealt with there was screaming at me with his messages about when the item will arrive and I kept pointing out that to get updates all they had to do is click on the tracking number. Buyers on Reverb need to understand that sellers aren't usually professional music stores and are usually regular folks like themselves with a 9 to 5 (or maybe a 5 to 9!) job to do and palpating them isn't in their primary career's job description. As for me Reverb is going to lose that business as I've been taking it over to Guitar Center and will get what I can there without the muss and fuss which I don't need right now. If Reverb wants that business back then they can work toward making it a safe environment for ALL parties including sellers. At the end of the day one must decide what is in your control and what is not. It is within my choice to not sell on Reverb currently as I don't want to deal with unreasonable situations like this any longer.

Photoed every inch of the guitar, showed the serial number, showed me putting it the case and wrapping it up in bubble wrap. Took videos of me boxing it in the original Martin box with peanuts and bubble wrap and shipped it out. The guy had the balls to text me and tell me that the trim was coming off of the lower bout and he was going to report and wanted some compensation or something, I don’t really remember. Threatened to make a claim to Reverb or something, until I sent him the videos and pictures. He texted me and told me to forget it, that he had a luthier he used and would fix it. As you already know, I only have 2 guitars and I am happy with what I got. If I was out to look for another guitar, I would never buy on the internet. I would rather buy in a store. There you can at lease play it before you choose to buy. I still remember quite a few years ago a teenage girls parents bought her her first electric guitar on the internet for Christmas. When they got it out of the box, it was toast. They took it to a store to have it fixed just to find out the store had the same guitar for $200.00 cheaper and in way better condition.

Hello Robert! That was intense! Even as a buyer I am reluctant to use reverb , only if it's such a hard to find part. I will go to ebay first. I think buyers should have some responsibility to realize what they are buying. If you buy a 1977 acoustic guitar you have to have the sense that the bridge is rising, there is belly bulge, it needs a fret dress at the least ,and there's finish checking despite what the seller may claim. Communication with the seller is necessary before purchasing and if the seller does not respond don't buy the item. I realize what I'm buying needs work due to the age but I really don't like reverb and I'm just a buyer! Keep it cool man and keep on 🪨 rocking!

Hello Robert. You may remember I was asking about small home use modelling amps a few days ago. Well you'll be pleased to know that I've gone tube. BUT... it still has the ability to store patches. I refer to the H & K Grandmeister Deluxe 40. The best part is I can use it as a normal tube amp, or I can add in whatever effect I need if I'm looking for a certain tone / sound. Ok, it was more expensive than the modellers, but it looks absolutely fantastic with the blue backlighting. What I didn't know (and I may have duff info here) is the GM 40 borrows from the Tri-amp. I spoke to a store called Guitar Guitar in the UK & asked their honest opinions about those small modellers. He was totally honest & said they all sound too boxy & artificial, even the new Soldano mini head which I believe is tubeless. So I have to praise you again, I neither want or like using a tablet to give me access to thousands of sounds. Because when I started playing in 1980, I was more than happy with 3 or 4 Boss pedals & a Park head with a 4 x 12 Marshall cab. And how I wish I had kept those pedals. Don't ask what speakers the cab had, I was too young & naive to check. So there you go, a tube amp it is. Bliss.

I sympathize with you, they're awful to deal with. Reverb has turned into ebay, filled with commission and tax fees that are brutal if you're only selling a few pieces of gear. Combine that with buyers that will intentionally damage because of buyer's remorse or didn't research before ordering. All this has resulted in jacked up prices for customers and non existent customer service. Bottom line sell on marketplace and wait for them to sell.

I have to say Robert, this was an absolutely entertaining video, I’m sorry that you got screwed around by reverb, believe it or not I have bought hundreds of items from Reverb, I never sell anything I buy, I am going to be 60 years old in January 2023, I have been playing the guitar since I was 11 years old, That’s nearly 50 years of buying guitar related instruments, drums keyboards etc., just in the past month I bet you I spent nearly $10,000 on gear from Reverb alone, not including thousands with American musical supply, ZZOUNDS, Sweetwater, musicians friends etc.… so what I’m basically trying to get at is that you are probably right because as a buyer of which I am, reverb definitely caters to make that money, hopefully I’ll never try to sell anything that I own so I don’t have to deal with the bullshit that you just went through, as we speak right now I’m actually waiting for a brand new $1900 EVH striped series shark to go with my other three EVH guitars and 5 EVH amps with matching cabinets, I currently own over 50 guitars and around 25 Amplifiers, literally hundreds of the top selling guitar pedals available on the market today, head rush gig boards with matching 2000w FRFR 112 powered speaker, PA systems with several microphones, nine piece Tama drum kit, electronic drums, two Yamaha keyboards set up on two-stage stand, I mean, I can keep on going on and on and on….recording gear, computers, pro tools, focarite, Bluguitar iridium, Four Marshalls, Orange , boss amps, Peavey, fender. Literally, gods honest truth, from my positive grid and THR30 to my JCM 900, like I said I have just about every possible quality guitar amplifier of just about every make there is, just about every custom shop strat, tele, les Paul, popular signature guitars, you name and I got it in my studio, nearly a half million dollars worth of gear easy at the used market price, probably cost me nearly $1 million originally brand new because what I forgot to mention is I never buy used gear at all, everything I buy is brand new because I don’t want to deal with anybody’s bullshit, don’t get me wrong I am definitely on your side on this one because for a measly $50 this kid was giving you that hard of a time if that was me I would’ve just put the damn thing to the side and forgot about it most likely and bought something else instead of going through all the trouble to return a $50 item, most likely giving it away to my daughters boyfriend like I’ve already done, given him 3 small practice amps I had laying around, not using, gave him, two guitars I never played anymore, a couple cheaper $100+ pedals I never used any longer…he is a fairly new beginner guitarist so I enjoy helping him out with gear he otherwise couldn’t afford to purchase but my god what a fucking joke with this clown buyer you delt with….one lesson that I have learned from your very entertaining video is keep on doing what I’m doing, buy, buy, buy…. fuck the selling bullshit unless you really need the money why do you sell it anyway you’re buying gear to have fun, enjoy it fuck the sale shit!!!!g

Long story coming up, so strap yourselves in. I work for an outdoor furniture company. Back in May 2019, a husband and wife contacted us, inquiring about a new dining table and some chairs for their backyard. They came into our showroom, picked out what they liked, made a deposit and we got their table & chairs to them within a week. They thanked our delivery guys and paid the rest of what they owed. However, about two weeks later, the problems started: The wife contacted us and complained that four out of the six chairs were stained by rainwater. She was livid with the problem and rubbed our head saleswoman the wrong way; the argument could be heard all throughout the office. Ultimately, cooler heads prevailed after she sent us pictures. We then agreed to send her four brand new chairs that had a better waterproofing job done to them. A couple days later, I personally accompanied one of our delivery guys to drop off the new chairs. Once we assembled the chairs (they come unassembled from the factory) and set them up, the wife said three of them were wobbly; she also remarked: "I'm done!" The delivery guy looked the chairs over, noticed the three in question had been delivered crooked from the factory, and told her this was not the only case of this. She then started going off, barking at us: "Well, why do you sell these chairs if they're known to have a defect?" As the delivery guy calmly tried to explain the situation to her, her husband arrived home; and he was just as fiery as his wife. After his wife told him what was happening, he demanded to speak to the saleswoman (who his wife griped to about the original chairs.) Our saleswoman didn’t answer the phone because she knew what was coming. Thoroughly annoyed, the couple began arguing before I made the mistake that the manager of the company was also my father. Naturally, they wanted to speak to my father, so I called his cell number. No sooner had my father answered did the wife snatch my iPhone from my hand and start going off on him. After a few minutes of back-&-forth, her husband took the phone and started running his mouth. "Listen, sir, I run my own business on the motto of: 'The customer's always right!'" or something to that effect was his argument. While my dad agreed with that, he made sure to tell the couple he had enough of this nonsense. With the call going nowhere, my father told them they could either A: wait until new, perfect chairs arrived, B: pick out different chairs, or C: have us take the wobbly chairs away. Initially, the couple didn’t like any of the options; they didn’t want to risk the same chairs again, didn’t like any of the other style chairs we had, and didn’t want to be left with only two chairs; "You can’t just leave us with three chairs!" the wife said at one point. After the call, they decided they would try their luck with option A: wait for perfect chairs. The delivery guy and I loaded the wobbly chairs into our truck and promised the third set would be a charm; the wife seemed to buy that and even tipped us $20 each for our trouble. By now it was mid-June; the new chairs arrived and were delivered to the couple, who to everyone’s surprise, was FINALLY satisfied. A few weeks passed without anything else from the couple, aside from the rest of their payment coming in. Then at the beginning of August, the wife called us back inquiring about new cushions in a different color (they decided the included cushions weren’t “their color.”) They showed up at our showroom and one of our salesmen took her through all the colors they could pick from. The finally chose a dark blue (if I remember correctly.) All of August passed without much and as I usually don’t go on deliveries, I assumed they had gotten their cushions without much fanfare. Then on September 13, 2019, Friday the 13th of all days, we got a call from the husband, who started barking at our secretary that they hadn’t gotten their new cushions. “Here we go again!”, I thought. Our secretary, however, had gotten crafty since her first interaction with them. She pretended she had to go with another employee and passed them over to our one sales guy. The sales guys calmly explained everything to the wife but while she began to relax, her husband kept complaining about the lousy service we had given them over the entire summer. He kept going around in circles and even threatened at one point to post a negative review of our company in the local newspaper: “You wait and see how quickly the public will turn on you!”, he sneered. 10 minutes after we hung up with him, the husband called back and began growling at the same sales guy who sold them the new cushions. Our sales guy is smart though: he calmly explained the color they wanted was on backorder and they were set to arrive later in the week. Still, that did little - if anything - to calm the husband down. He repeated his threat to post his negative review, but our sales guy was one step ahead of that too: “Who reads the newspaper anymore?”, he asked at one point. The husband then said he was giving him one last chance to get the cushions to him and finally hung up for good. Our sales guy was right about the cushions being back-ordered, but here’s the real kicker: he was also right about us contacting the couple to tell them about the backorder; THREE TIMES!!!! In his angry calls on Friday the 13th, he denied getting that information in any way, shape, or form. Get this straight: we told the couple their cushions were back-ordered - three times - and he repeatedly denied getting a call from us about the situation; a literal case of the pot calling the kettle black! Finally, on Saturday, September 14, we got the cushions in and delivered them to the couple, who paid for them and said we wouldn’t hear from them again, which we haven't over three years later. So I feel you, Robert; some customers can be absolute assholes. I think the only time Reverb will side with the seller is if the buyer doesn't pay. If this guy's payment bounced or he didn't pay at all, maybe (just *maybe)* Reverb would've sided with you. But since he did pay, automatically Reverb sides with the customer, and that's the reality of doing business on Reverb, unfortunately. After our issues with that couple, my brother-in-law (also my boss) hung a picture of Joe Pesci in his office that he added the following text to: Across the top: *"The customer's always right?"* Across the bottom: *"Fuck that! Robert I guarantee you when you get that wireless unit back it’s gonna work just fine all is is buyers remorse you were right
@RobertWJackson2 жыл бұрын
It turned out that it didn’t work properly, but all of the identifying info on the box including the serial number and UPC had conveniently been ripped off from the box when I got it back. I didn’t have a record of any of that stuff because it’s a $50 wireless system and I didn’t think it would ever be important on something like that. So he could have very well pulled a switcheroo on me. Unfortunately, I have no way to prove it.

I was going to list some studio gear on Reverb recently but being Canadian they said the only way now Canadians can sell is if we use Plaid and this requires your bank user and password not just account info. WTF When I said thats not acceptable they said its the only choice for Canada new users. I'm thinking 7 days the buyer has to request returns. So if I sold him a U47 he has like a week with it before they come back for a return authorization. Anyway. I see them falling off now . Where would Reverb be without sellers????

I have to go through this with high dollar items. Be happy it was only $38. You can resell this so don't go through all this emotion and aggrivation. You can't fight against Reverb. They will always side with the customer no matter how wrong the buyer may be.

When I first started hearing about and seeing links to equipment listed on Reverb, I had this feeling that something just doesn't seem right about this whole Reverb thing. You just confirmed my suspicions. I'm sorry you confirmed them because of your negative personal interaction and experiences with Reverb. Thanks for the informative video, Robert. I'm with you Robert! I never trusted those assholes because they are always keeping their prices sky high! Yes, their customer service blows big time! Once I bought a used Electra-Phoenix guitar from them where the pics showed the guitar in decent shape. When I received it, it looked pretty on the outside but needed a lot of internal work! I was told that it was in great shape! In this case, Reverb took the side of the crooked seller and I was forced to keep it. So it's going to cost me over $300. dollars to get it in decent shape! Never again! SMH

@@RobertWJackson I can't prove anything. All I know is - I sent a perfectly working preamp to a guy... he gets it and then starts making insane reasons why he needs to return it immediately. I allow the return - Reverb insisted - even though it was sold 'AS IS' - and I get it home , and it's defective. Reverb did NOT have my back on that. Similar to your story - they guy was being a spaz. That's a red flag for sure.

Robert, I'm glad I've never sold anything on Reverb, after hearing Paypal horror stories 10-12 years ago I would never do it. Even though I've heard Reverb horror stories, I've still occasionally bought stuff through them, (pedals only) some from private individuals with excellent ratings but mostly through real shops if I can, because I can verify it and usually get better treatment. I never ran into any problems. I think most of the problems experienced are by the sellers because they're the one's having the most to lose and have to have stuff to sent back to them and refund these idiots and pay shipping and extra BS fees. My Reverb story worked in reverse to yours and I'm glad it did in my case. I ordered a used re-stocked Flashback delay from a shop in upstate New York that didn't work right and a TCE dealer in my area verified it being defective. No wonder it was re-stocked by someone else. I called the shop, (which is nice to be able to do when it's an actual business), they took it back, but said it performed correctly upon its return to them but they gave me my money back anyway. So, they were lying, because we tested it against a new Flashback in the store in my area. They weren't happy about taking it back. I mainly detest Reverb because even if online purchases are supposed to be easy, Reverb makes it hard if you have any kind of problem because you have to go on "chat" and wait and wait and wait.......Then these people who I don't seem to have a good understanding of English are harder to communicate with even in chat texting. I have only half the time bought something that I didn't need help on, giving me lots of grief and almost a stroke every time. Thing is, there doesn't seem to be anything better for used pedals if you don't want to pay new retail or if you're hunting stuff out of production. I've got lots of pedals shipped from different Guitar Center's across the country which is reliable.

Nope, I ran into the same problem. If you need their help with something, their live chat and email functions are the only available methods. Businesses that don’t provide customer service phone numbers usually have a reason why they don’t provide customer service phone numbers: THEY DON’T WANT TO INVEST IN CUSTOMER SERVICE.
