there is no better idea than this what you do! I wish you would continue like this for ever. Keep the beginner level much longer time and put solos reminiscent to what we know as blueprint structures on the blues scene. Blues licks are super nice for advanced guitar players who feel the structure of the blues solo and can use them putting them into the right places. The beginners should learn solos from the very beginning learning licks "in the structure" of the blues. Thank you. Please follow your simple and awesome concept.

Thanks very much. Yes, that's what I'm aiming for. Recently I ran a survey for my viewers and over 50% class themselves as intermediate rather than beginner, so I try to balance the beginner lessons with some that are a little more challenging, but all the while in the structure of a blues - usually the 12 bar - with a backing track, so that viewers can see the licks in context. Hi Marc, Firstly, thank you for sharing your blues passion and for replying so quickly with the tabs. I am old guy and beginner but I want to play the blues. I have been practicing the 5 minor pentatonic shapes over and over until I can do them blind folded. This video was a real ah ha moment and now I am understanding a little better on why I have been practicing those shapes. I now see the little house that you talk about and now I am seeing all the possibilities up and down the neck in those 5 shapes. I would love to see you make a video on the various techniques (bends, slides etc) as I can see how important techniques are for the blues sound. thank you again and big cheers

Thanks Bruce, this is a great comment. I've been planning a 'blues technique' video for a while, looking at all the different ways it's possible to play a note. On the 'part 1' of this did include looking at vibrato, sliding and bending; so that's worth looking at
@CaanDo014 жыл бұрын
@@MarcGuitarVideos I second Bruce's request. My bends just don't sound as good as your examples although they are getting better. For example you can hear the bend up and back down when I play. I'd love to see the proper technique for bending. Even for the notes that are just bent slightly sharp. And help on how to develop good vibrato technique too.

Thanks for a very clear lesson on blues soloing Marc. My biggest problem is getting " that sound " from my amp. I see from one of your replies that you use the " clean " channel and a Boss Blues Driver pedal for your sound. If I get a BBDriver and set my amp to " clean " then I should be close to the sound that I want. Thanks again for the lesson.
@MarcGuitarVideos3 жыл бұрын
Hi Richard, that's a very tricky question because while that pedal should get you there, all pedals - and in fact all gear - react very differently depending on the guitar, amp, other pedals etc. Every amp's clean tone sound different. Also, I believe that the way we play makes a huge difference. However, I'd certainly recommend trying out the Blues Driver. Of all the drive pedals I've ever tried, it's my favourite. I usually have the drive at about a third the way up and the tone in the middle, and then just make small adjustments depending on the guitar I'm using.
@richardread82813 жыл бұрын
@@MarcGuitarVideos Thanks Marc. I'll give it a try. Having had acoustic guitars most of my adult life learning the electric guitar with all the associated gear to me is a minefield and also can be expensive. Thanks again and I'll keep watching.

Marc, I think this is a good idea but I’m not sure. What about putting in the description a couple of sentences telling us which guitar,amp and pedals you used in the video. As a beginner effects pedals at times leave me scratching my head. I have noticed on other channels people seem to be very interested in this and really appreciate the information. Keep up the good work, you are definitely one of the top guys around and a very nice person to boot.
@MarcGuitarVideos4 жыл бұрын
Hi - that's an interesting suggestion. Whenever I do any kind of gear lesson, they get very few views. I think most of my audience are interested in learning about scales and techniques more than anything else. My actual set up is very simple, guitar and valve amp (Blackstar HT5R) DI'd straight into the computer. There's reverb in the amp. I have it set with just a bit of gain, not a lot. This will either be from the amp or from a BOSS Blues Driver, it just depends on the video as both sound similar, but the amp can get a little noisy. Also, during the performance there will be a small amount of delay from a very cheap analogue delay pedal, but this is set more like a big reverb rather than an actual delay. So it's pretty simple really.
@Yendorl14 жыл бұрын
Thanks Marc, another great lesson, but my personal preference would be for a less distorted, sweeter tone as in some of your earlier lessons. Just me of course, probably lots out there who would not agree. Still great work, and still subscribed.

Hi Marc. I have been practising hard at the a minor blues licks in the first three positions, and learning them well enough so that I can move around in the different positions and even though I don't really know what I am doing it does not sound too bad to me. My wife does not throw her clothes at me and the cat still leaves the room but I think I am improving. I just use an A minor backing track off utube but I have no idea how to play the correct licks according to which chord the backing track is playing. Any suggestions, is it that important? I am never going to play in a band.
@MarcGuitarVideos4 жыл бұрын
Hi Peter - As long as you are improving and your are enjoying it, of course it doesn't matter. 9 times out of 10, playing the scale (i.e. coming up with licks from the scale without worrying about the underlying chords) is perfectly good. When it comes to blues, you can do it either way. Sometimes it's fun to just play and not worry about it, but sometimes it's good to deliberately target notes from the underlying chords. What ever works for you
@peteredrich97494 жыл бұрын
@@MarcGuitarVideos Thanks Marc. I remember your earlier comment, "Don't practise until you get it right, practise until you don't get it wrong." A hard enough challenge with all those licks, so that is what I will focus on for now. Keep up the great work. Peter
@peterbradshaw19194 жыл бұрын
Hi Marc, I have a particular problem with bending and adding vibrato. I can bend OK, but it seems to require so much force to keep the string in place that I can't move my finger to add the vibrato. I am, so not as strong as I used to be, 75 and have a touch of arthritis, so this may be the root cause of the problem, but can you give me any advice?
@MarcGuitarVideos4 жыл бұрын
Peter Bradshaw if the issue is technique then just keep practicing and bend with your ring finger but support it with your index and middle fingers behind it. It does take quite a bit of practice to get it under control. However, if the issue is strength then consider lowering your string size as that will make bending a lot easier
@peterbradshaw19194 жыл бұрын
@@MarcGuitarVideos Thanks Marc. I was supposed to post my comment on the lesson on string bending but it ended up here for some reason. I have thought about lowering my string sizw, but I am already on 9s. I perhaps will try 8s, and of course keep practicing.

@kingdavidhoward4 жыл бұрын
Thanks Marc, what's your amp set up. What do you use to to get that sustain
@MarcGuitarVideos4 жыл бұрын
Hi Claude! My set up is pretty simple, the guitar either goes into the dirty channel of the amp with the gain fairly low (its a high gain amp) or it goes in to the clean channel through a BOSS Blues Driver. Other than that, the amp has a bit of reverb and for the performance I'll include an analogue delay, but set fairly low. The truth about the sustain is mainly the the PRS has incredible sustain. These are guitars well known for it; and to be honest, the Les Paul has really good sustain too. I don't think there's any secret here: a good guitar and a good valve amp with a bit of dirt dialled in. As for the amp, none of the tone controls were set particularly extremely, I don't move them too far from their half way point and the ISR control was set to the Marshall tone rather then the Fender-y side. Hope this helps

since the lick is in A minor i would have thought the backing track should also be in A minor but that sounds sh!t when i tried it, why is that?
@MarcGuitarVideos7 ай бұрын
Ahh, well that's the magic of the blues! We play minor scale over a dominant 7th chord and it sounds bluesy. So the backing track uses the chords A7, D7 and E7; but we play minor pentatonic over the top and the clash between the 7th chords and the minor notes adds that dirty blues sound.
