All of this boat content reminds me of my days back in the mid-1970s when I was a boat designer at Glastron Boats. I know all of us car guys use the term "fender leaning" when we are in the garage, but this reminds me of "gunwale leaning" which is what you do while working on boats!

Glastron Carlson was my favorite recreation boat of all time. My buddies dad had one and he put a 1970 LT1 crate motor in it so it was pretty fast.

@@sanger440 When I was there 1975-1984, we had just purchased Carslon from Art (he stayed on with the company). His entire line had great deep V running surfaces with cool design above the water. I was in charge of most dash/console design and all the bass boats. Man, this is taking me back. Good times.

In the late 80s and early 90s I was boating with my parents as a kid, every weekend of every summer, we had a four Winn's liberator but I always remember my dad pointing out other boats and I liked paying attention to manufacturers like with cars, but I always remember my dad pointing out glastrons here and there, reminds me of the good times. 🙂

I had forgotten all about not wanting a sheet of glass for top speed in a “speed boat” but Kevin saying that reminded me about a buddy of mine who had a jet boat back in the 90’s and his hull had a pair of air scoops on the front deck that were plumbed to duct on the bottom of the hull which was supposed to force air under the hull and create bubbles to help with top speed of the boat. The scoops had a cable control to open / close a damper plate (think throttle blade) to control the amount of air directed to the bottom of the boat.

My uncle raced boats back in the 50s, (got a house full of trophies down in Fl), and he said the water felt like asphalt at 60 mph!!! Can't imagine what it would feel like at 110!!! Yall be careful, and HAVE FUN :-) He built Mercury outboards and raced them on the lakes in central Fl. He owned a marine repair shop down there for years. Its hard to believe you can get those motors to live that long producing that much power!!! Drag cars are tough, but marine engines gotta live longer than 8 seconds ;-)

Totally agree. I have been around 80 MPH in a flat bottom boat and the sensation of speed (wind in your face, close to the water and screaming engine) is WAY more than the 140+ I have been a couple time in cars. Nothing like it. It truly feels like riding on top of a rock skipping across the water.

Yep........a mirror smooth lake/water surface actually slows a boat down. When you've already ran basically any power boat at top speed on a rippled surface to mild chop, and then try running balls out on glass smooth water, you can literally feel the difference. The best way to describe running a boat on a glass smooth lake is: it feels like you're running on a lake full of Elmer's Glue........or even pudding. A nice rippled surface or slight chop gives ya that air mixed with water, reducing the friction between the water and the hull.
