The first digimon world had this 'Alice in Wonderland' sort of feel to it in the best possible way. You felt like a stranger, a legitimate little kid, in this world that has been around for a lot longer than you have been around and has just worked and existed long before you could speak. It felt natural and strange, and great.

DW1 was my personal Mario 64, but not strictly for any "liminal space" shenanigans. What frightened me as a toddler was how strongly it contrasted with the anime dub. The atmosphere was dire rather than comical and adventurous, battles were tense instead of exciting, and even evolution was scary compared to how hype the anime made it look. All the foreboding ambience didn't help when my toddler self was so used to Pokémon. And while all other Digimon can speak, your partner can't, even though it'd lighten the mood so much if they could. In the last video, you brought up the recurring moment of falling from somewhere, and while that didn't scare me in the moment, I do think it contributed to a nightmare I had where your character could fall from certain places and actually die, causing a game over. I had many weird dreams about this game as a kid, definitely caused by the "overwhelming" vibes in moments like those. About Digimon and religion, by the way- while they don't really have them the way that we do, the way concepts are expressed in the Digital World tends to mimic the perception that humans have of them. It's why so many of the strongest holy and dark Digimon tend to be directly based on deities, and it's likely also why there are so many out-of-place objects strewn about the world in general.

The greatest horror of the frost church: the nearest toilet is three blocks away, in a bilzzard, in a *really* bad neighborhood. Admittedly the toilets in digimon world are some delightful nonsense. Factorial town, the only place in the entire world of digimon world that has a sewer? No toilet. The great canyon, in the middle of nowhere across the invisible bridge? Perfectly pristine blue-green tiled bathroom just waiting for you.

When I was a kid, I absolutely hated going to Tropical Jungle at night because the night theme music terrified me. I think I felt the same way over Overdell, The Great Canyon, and Misty Trees. Despite the issues it has, Digimon World is still my favorite Digimon game. You actually feel like you're going out into an unknown world and exploring it. Man all this Digimon World content recently is making me want to find my old copy and play again. Speaking of Ancient Speedy Region, allow me to share memory I'm not to proud of. So I was trying to get a Greymon, of all the champions level digimon you can get in the game I've only gotten Greymon once. So I was making sure to meet the parameters to a t, but I ended up with Numemon. I was so upset that I went to the Ancient Speedy Region and just stood there while I went to watch TV. I let that Numemon just whiter away because I was mad over not getting a Greymon after all the work I did to meet the requirements. Yeah I'm not proud of that moment.

I know what you mean! It’s been really nice seeing it blow up again. And I think we’ve all been there killing off a digimon we don’t like on purpose - but as you say not our best moments lmao

The Kokatorimon is recruited at that exact spot, early in the morning. You're given a hint in the city "wake up early and walk in the mist and something good will happen" or something like that. I've always liked to believe they were just statues as opposed to petrified Digimon because he is an artist/sculptor in the game.
@8bitjakeyАй бұрын
That is a lot more wholesome, so maybe I’ll go with that in future haha
@Dylan-QuincyАй бұрын
That's definitely what they were going for, that he was misunderstood, and was just a sculptor. Poor Kokatorimon, all he wanted was to make art. Doesn't help that he DOES have the power to petrify though lol.

I think the speedy zone having the giant skeleton, and the ice sanctuary being like a cathedral are not themselves necessarily a result of, or handiwork of, digimon. The digital world and its inhabitants have been established as being influenced by data from.the internet and other electronic sources. That's where Mummymon got its appearance for example. The ice sanctuary might just have been data of a safe place, in this case a church, influenced by the data of the surrounding frigid environment. The skeleton in the speedy region meanwhile just is probably just data of something like a fossil, scaled up.

honestly, i kinda wonder if Cherrymon's design wasn't firmly established in-lore since the digimon itself was introduced in the Pendulum V-Pets, though it wasn't a thing until at least 4.0 in June 1999 (as Jyureimon), yet the game and anime itself was released on January and March respectively. i'd just assume that Bandai was pretty close to the source in terms of adapting digimon from the V-Pets, before they went with Toei Animation for the animated adaptation. if we're assuming that all V-Pets are compatible with eachover within the same generation that still has a range of Oct 1998 to March 2000. even Gekomon and Shogungekomon were basically sprite swaps that resembled frogs in V-Pets, but got updated to humanoid anphibians with tubas. probably isn't much you can make from a limited pixel size. yet they still utilized old-era sprites for digimon that isn't playable, again, for stuff like Shugungekomon. though i'd assume they're used on the collectible card screen, or in stuff like tournement brackets. probably makes sense for even enemy digimon to have menu sprites. Also Cherrymon itself didn't appear in the japanese TCG until October 2000 (Starter Ver 4, card St-205) but has the anime design. placing my finger on Digimon World initially intending to be a soft-reveal for the series to last a couple of months as the merch slowly releases. while changing designs a bit, kinda like how Pikachu became less fat. also, thought it was weird that Metalgreymon (Vaccine) wasn't a thing, but i guess it could've been done to make Agumon appear more heroic for the anime. the Virus version debuted in June 1997 w/Version 1 of the Digital Monster V-pets. EDIT: It's also strange that the Vpets in the opening cinematic and ingame (jijimon's terminal, Nanimon's drops) resembles the digital monster vpets more than the Pendulums. wonder how long the game was in-development.

Makes sense! I’ve never really looked too deep into the vpet stuff, I do have a vital bracelet I never use but as a kid I mostly rocked the adventure 02 and tamers digivice haha!
@8bitjakeyАй бұрын
As for metalgreymon, I presume as you say changing to vaccine and making him less evil looking was because of him being a protagonist, but also cause of the whole turning purple cause the metal augmentations discolouring their flesh might be a bit too much for kids lol
@mirko241Ай бұрын
@@8bitjakey I don't think it's "too much for the kids", because SkullGreymon exists. Imo MetalGreymon was changed to vaccine/orange to bring more contrast against the other, darker ultimate level digivolution.

I suspect the frost cathedral is a reference to the first place Taichi goes to in the first manga, where holyangemon resides and gives Taichi the task of defeating Demon, the idea that it's desolate and Angemon is there instead could mean the manga takes place before (due to angemon's evolutionary state) or after everyone there was defeated

Kokatorimon didn't turn anyone into stone. Kokatorimon have that power but he specifically actually makes statues, that's why he makes a statue of the main character in the city when you recruit him. One of his dialogues explains that he was misunderstood.
