I have used wash rags and have for years because I got tired of spending $300 + a year for paper towels . Buying refill bottles or filling your cleaners with water extends it's life ❤

Good morning Granny although it is after 5pm here in SW Florida. This was a very good video with many good idea's for saving our money. I think each time we pull out of the drive way it cost's money. Gas, wear and tear on the car and then where ever you go it is going to cost money. So the way I save is I have found my happy place right here at home and only pull out of the drive if it is only necessary. Such as Dr. Apt.'s or once a month grocery shopping. Spontaneous trips and spending eats up our money. It is not the water you loose out of the top of the bucket because you are careful not to spill it but the tiny hole in the bottom that leaks your water out slowly but surely. So I use this as an analogy when care taking my income. Retired on social security many of us at this age have to find our happiness in simple things that does not take our money. Love to all and God bless.

Single person here cooked pot roast ate one meal divided the rest three containers in the fridge and four in the freezer. If I get tired of eating the same thing I have four in the freezer I can wait on if I get tired of it and fix something else that way stuff doesn't spoil or goes to waste.

I do this also.. and when I'm done using it, I cut up the paper and use it in making homemade firestarters(paper cup with cut up paper in it and melted wax from cheap thrift store candles) for my woodstove in Fall/Winter. I feel it's a way I can get something out of the nuisance of junk mail.

I bought a box of Mac a Roni ( cousin to rice aroni I guess? ) for fifty cents. I will not buy it again, it was not for me. The powdery stuff made 4 bags of cheesy popcorn for my husband's lunches. I made a big bowl of macaroni salad, and 3 plates of mac dinners with lil dabs of mystery this and that from the freezer. I delight in making them all different flavors and putting them back in the freezer for nights when I'm too hot, tired or lol lazy to cook. It helps that my hubby is not a picky eater he grew up grateful for anything. I eat salads. Not bad eh? Bless.

I've picked up dozens of cloth napkins from thrift stores often a dozen for $1.50 to $2.00. It has been over 20 years since I purchased paper napkins. I have a drawer full of thrifted napkins and only bought three new. These napkins are very good quality because people no longer use them, they ended up in the thrift shops. Actually, I have too many and need to donate some myself. I now absolutely hate using paper napkins. During Covid I could not find tissues and started using handkerchiefs. Since I have allergies, I was using up to three boxes of tissues per month, so my savings have been substantial. I had saved my late dh's handkerchiefs so didn't have to purchase any. I did later purchase a package of new which cost less than $5. The cotton hankies are so much nicer on the nose than tissues which is a huge plus. My dd gave me a rice cooker that I didn't like. I gave it back to her because I prefer using a stainless pan that works just as well and is much easier to clean. One less item to find a place to store. My electric skillet died, and I've never replaced it. I have cast iron and a Revere Ware stainless skillets which work just fine and again I don't have to store an electric skillet.

I watched this woman walk up to a city trash can and throw out a whole bunch of reusable bags…I waited until she left, walked over and pulled those bags out! There was actually nothing wrong with them. I took several of them, then left the rest on a table in the lobby of my building for others to take!

We buy quart and gallon size Dr, Bonner liquid soaps and use them for everything from laundry, shower/shampoo, carpet, plants, washing the dog and the car! A quart will last over a year, a gallon 3+ years. Dr. Bonner liquid soaps and a gallon of plain generic vinegar, salt and lemons are about all we use for cleaning. We strive to avoid buying paper towels, napkins, plates etc. For years we have bought 10-12 packs of the small finger towels from Amazon/Walmart and use them for napkins. They absorb better and are soft and all our guests love ♥them. Having a small vegetable garden saves me money. As does dehydrating fruits and vegetables that I get for 50%-70% less at the local organic farmers markets, when I go half an hour before my favorite vendors pack up. Didn't you do a video where you saved your vegetable scraps in the freezer for when you make soup stock? 🙂 Herbs and spices we buy in bulk at ethnic stores because we cook a lot of different ethnic foods and buying in bulk makes sense. If someone likes to cook more American it wouldn't make much sense to invest in herbs and spices one would not use. When my nice white sheets get to be 10 years old and are looking sad, I turn them into washable bags for groceries as well as bulk items like fruits, vegetables, nuts and grains. Using my needlework skills, I embroider food saying one the gags. All our stores from Whole Foods to Safeway all allow me to bring my clean glass Pyrex containers for bulk wet items like salad, condiments, seafood etc. Have you ever heard of a bidet? We got hooked on them in Europe and Asia and Amazon has sanely priced ones that are easy to install. They save on water as well as bath tissue.

Serious question Granny. . Is it cheaper to use rags for napkins or paper towels when you have to use water ,electricity and soap to wash and dry them ? I get mine at Dollar Tree for $1.25 and paper towels too. Just wondering if anyone ever did a cost comparison ???

Good question we wash our clothes anyway so it’s just part of the laundry ,you will always have cloth napkins and rags available where as you can run out of paper towels. ( I do use a small amount of paper towel for nasty cat messes ) But in the long run use what you already have .so to answer your question I think it is cheaper to use reusable .

I have always bought my cloth napkins from the thrift store very cheaply or made them homemade from scrap cotton fabric (thrifted or cut up from something I no longer needed) and like the others mentioned, I just launder them with towels and linens that are already being laundered. When I feel they are no longer "napkin worthy," I use them as rags to toss after messy use. Some of my cloth napkins have lasted so long... years and years.. and more years longer that I wanted to get rid of them before their useful time had ended. I figure I am saving money by using them instead of paper napkins, and I am avoiding cutting down a tree for paper and the bleaching process that paper goes through in being processed so in some small way it helps the environment too. But if I have a super large gathering at my home or am traveling, I will use paper napkins or if my guests are uncomfortable with cloth napkins.

Ground beef is on sale for $3.99/pound, so I bought and canned 24 pints today. I could have frozen packages of my mix too. To stretch my ground beef, I have added summer squash, corn, bell pepper, and onion. This hamburger mix can be used in different meals I make and the veggies are healthy and bring the cost down. Many use rice, oatmeal, and bread crumbs but I didn't want to add carbs and it uses garden veggies I grew. I recently started making my own dishwasher detergent from an online recipe after seeing the cost of it at the store. It works well but doesn’t have any anti-caking agent in it so I have to pick at it to make it granulize again because I'm in a humid climate and I stored it in a jar. In a ziploc type bag, it would be easier to just pound the bag a bit.

I only make one trip to town a week. I include everything in one trip like any appointments, bank, grocery store and other places. Some weeks I have a lot of stops and other weeks only a few stops. We do not eat out except for once a month and then we go where we have a coupon for. We set a limit on how much we will spend. I cut up any junk mail with blank pieces on them to use for making lists on. I do not buy clothes unless I need them, not want them. I have clothes that are several years old and still fit and look okay. Same with shoes. I have not bought a new pair of shoes for many years. I have many, many other ways to save money. Too many to share on here.

Oh my! That is horrid! I'm sorry you are having such prices and I worry those prices are spreading. A family member requested a name brand bag of chips instead of a generic brand I bought them last month as their treat.. 8.5 ounces for $5.82/bag today. Pretty ridiculous price compared to the under $2 bag at Aldi, but they specifically requested name brand only. I hope things improve for you.
